Mario Gives Up 2: Let's resuscitate the Princess
Re: Mario Gives Up 2: Let's resuscitate the Princess
Would have won the contest hands down if it were entered.
Re: Mario Gives Up 2: Let's resuscitate the Princess
...I'm sorry, but that Rainbow Dash sprite is horrible.
Re: Mario Gives Up 2: Let's resuscitate the Princess
They're not memes it's just straight forward fandom.
But that discussion was had already, enough of that.
About the game:
I'm starting to find these dead land reward secrets rather disappointing, especially the #2 one wasn't really THAT much of a secret you couldn't find without the hint video

Re: Mario Gives Up 2: Let's resuscitate the Princess
I'm liking the variation of the Scarlet Weather Rhapsody music used for the Rainbow Dash race. I wonder if it's Worldpeace's port with different samples or another version entirely...
As for Land of the Dead 3...at least this level drives home the fact that if you want to give raocow a hard time in your Mario level, all you have to do is make it autoscrolling with an inherent amount of randomness and scenery obstruction. I'm taking notes here!

make an a2mt level called 'autoscroll with inherent randomness'
the chillaxest of dragons

But no, I actually meant that I was taking notes on what -not- to make if my own project ever gets off the ground.

Re: Mario Gives Up 2: Let's resuscitate the Princess
I wonder if they made the lava surfing level with Mario constantly having to move right in mind because a change like that would have made a world of difference. Also as bad as the mane sprite for RD was horrifying at least the flying one was pretty cool /)(^3^)(\
Re: Mario Gives Up 2: Let's resuscitate the Princess
Again, the game is plagued with poor design decisions.
I enjoyed the ponies level because I'm one of those guys. Though I suppose I should clarify that I liked the concept. It reminded me of the Boo races in the GBC port of Mario 1, and it was pretty cool. What wasn't cool was the fact that the midpoint shit you into the second part of the level, re-railing you toward the normal exit. It was just annoying. (Plus, raocow, you could've just Start+Select'd out of there instead of playing through the entire second half again, I don't know if you realized that eventually.) ALSO yeah the sprites/cutscene art was pretty horrible. Oh well!
As for Land of the Dead 3, I really enjoy the whole idea of hiding passwords in the game for things to be unlocked outside the game and this and that and whatever. When playing this level for myself, somehow I just got "in the zone" and was spin jumping around and doing these acrobatic pirouettes both off the metaphorical handle, and off the literal podoboo. It wasn't exactly an unfair level, but it was needlessly saturated with things. raocow jumping over the mushroom at the beginning is a good example of how you don't want to have that much stuff on the screen at once, because it elicits that response of avoiding everything. It was a one-time problem, but still.
Those sure are opinions!

Re: Mario Gives Up 2: Let's resuscitate the Princess
Cyphermur, your level design is really schizophrenic at times. In the last few videos especially, you've done odd things with midpoints, made a stage large enough for two levels, and have a level with two choices be completely unbalanced in difficulty. And yet, even with that, there are those times where it clicks with the gimmicks that you don't see too often, either. I don't get it.
Oh, and I didn't mind the second level of today's video. It was the race level that bothered me with the one shot or else gimmick. It's like you get it, then you lose it, then you get it again.

Re: Mario Gives Up 2: Let's resuscitate the Princess
That asinine pony level was like the worst level ever. Horrible design choices, ugly as hell sprite of something that looks like it was vomited up by a crayon-eating child in the first place, etc.
Re: Mario Gives Up 2: Let's resuscitate the Princess
You must have some mighty fickle as hell standards (or you're just "fail"trolling again). raocow has played much worse levels, even from the same author.Ometeotl wrote:That asinine pony level was like the worst level ever. Re: Mario Gives Up 2: Let's resuscitate the Princess
Well there's obviously a bit of hyperbole going on, but it was overall a poor level. Good concept, generally good level layout, but hiding the midpoint away in a place that forces you to re-do the level in its entirety is one of the worst design choices you can make.
Edit: Especially because the secret exit is literally required to beat the game. You need that password.

Re: Mario Gives Up 2: Let's resuscitate the Princess
Based on the fact that it seems to be using dice, I'm pretty sure you could skip one of the Land of the Dead levels and just brute force it. Only six combinations.NLTM wrote:Especially because the secret exit is literally required to beat the game. You need that password.

Oh no. If only there was some place where you could easily get 99 lives. (Or if you're not raocow and use savestates or rewinds or something.)NLTM wrote:Ah, but the catch is

Re: Mario Gives Up 2: Let's resuscitate the Princess
I still maintain that six attempts at most isn't too bad. Look at how many lives raocow lost in today's video. You wouldn't want to have to guess the whole password, but one digit seems doable.NLTM wrote:Ah, but the catch is

But enough about me, let's talk about Cypher.
Was MGU1 this... polarizing between good ideas and poor execution? I honestly can't remember. Maybe the Mushroom Kingdom Meltdowns had the same problem. It's been a while and for some (shocking!) reason I don't feel like going back to play them again.
When I see this hack I just get sad, because it had shitloads of potential. It's like seeing that promising smart girl in high school and then years later you find her doing bad amateur pornos.
Re: Mario Gives Up 2: Let's resuscitate the Princess
No, MGU was really good. MGU2 seems like DMC2, so let's just hope that Cypher attempts a MGU3 because that should be gold.

Come to think of it, I didn't bother with the MKM series. I guess I just don't like the guy's hacking style?

Re: Mario Gives Up 2: Let's resuscitate the Princess
I don't think it's so much his "style" as much as it is "things that could be easily ironed out". Cypher could easily release a Mario Gives Up v1.1 with a few fixes and tweaks, (Nix the entire second half of Kinda Sorta Think for one) and it'd probably be a great game. This entire thing seems like an untested Beta right now.
