this is the place where lps are being talked about. it's important to talk about games being played on the internet.

a0n0o0m0a0l0y wrote:Now that you mention it, why was SMW's Bowser Castle itself so long? You have to clear the two rooms, the Back Door portion and the Bowser fight in one go. I found that reasonable.

What I don't understand is how if you go the Back Door route, there's a midpoint in the Ninji room. It makes sense if it was moved to the normal castle route.
Because if there was a midpoint in the main castle you'd start out in the first area and not the dark room.

Also I hope you don't mind me bringing up scoring again, but I'm beginning not to understand why there was quarter points introduced when 1) there ended up being ties anyway and 2) there doesn't appear to be a "you can get x points for this and x points for that" scoring system (though there could have been.) It doesn't really matter, but I hope it says something that I'd rather mention this than anything that's actually happened in the levels.

I've never understood that either. The back door route is far shorter than the front door route.

It's because midpoints are tied to the level number of the level you enter from the overworld. Notice how the midpoint in the Back Door takes you back to the dark ninji room (which is the level you start in when entering Back Door). If a midpoint bar (regardless of location) were placed in the Front Door, it would lead to the first room of the Front Door (you know, the one with 1, 2, 3, 4 in it) due to the way midpoints are programmed. Of course, that doesn't explain why Nintendo didn't just make an extra little closed off area like many SMW hackers do for the midpoint area, but...what can ya' do?

megamario wrote:So something that's kind of been bugging me for a while (and maybe already discussed whatevs), but more so as we go along, is...why did so many people either (1) make a full level rather than a room and/or (2) miss the point of being like SMW's rooms (mostly vanilla, unedited pallets, etc)?
I've been trying to ask myself this, as well, but then I interrupt myself halfway through reminding myself that there were, apparently, two people who just submitted broken IPS files as their contest submission, and then I get stuck asking myself how that happened.

Well, one of the reasons why the contest was launched was to encourage non-pro-star SMW hackers to get hacking and doing something that would be judged. So, when you get non-pro-star hackers in, you sometimes get some really mixed up and inexperienced ideas- that's why they're not pro-stars. And like, keep in mind that SMWC probably continuously receives troll noob entry hacks that would make a lot of these low-thought entries appear golden.

Oh, that's kinda dumb. I'm sure it wouldn't have been that difficult for them to change that to something that made a bit more sense.

By that point the game was probably almost done and it wasn't worth tearing up all the other levels just to change how a minor mechanic worked.

EDIT: Also, bowser is really easy. However, if you've never seen Bowser in your life and have to learn him from first hand experience, forcing you to do a lot of stuff before reaching him is a cheap way to make him seem tougher without actually doing so.

No, this contest followed the placing rules people were complaining should have been used for vanilla 2010.

There's a tie for 29th, and the next one is 31st. (29th is also the last tie, in reverse sequence)

Or if you're really reckless like me it can be annoying to get to him at times. I can easily beat Bowser and the other levels in his world if I'm patient but I tend to screw off a lot and die.

I finally got a pre-paid cell phone last year and I barely use it. Well, I use it plenty to check the time, but actually calling/texting people? Pass.

Actually, when you got a smartphone and play with that all the time, who's the socially retarded one? Oh yes, you can chat with your friends 24/7 because god knows you can't spend 5 minutes on your own.. but having a conversation with someone and he's just grabbing his phone in the middle of conversation.. that's fucking retarded.

Whilst the "lost brother" level might not have been fun to play it was pretty fun to watch and I got a real urban legend type vibe, it's as if it is one of those things spoken about on school yards that everyone seemed to know about from a brother's friend or something.

I thought the Eversion hallway in TLMB's level was super-keen, but Moronio just sort of brought things crashing down. I'm glad Mario decided to leave that jerk behind and escape alone.

The failings in the lost brother episode were amusing, particularly when he short hopped into the long pit.

Oh lawd the extremist views in this here topic. I have a smartphone. I use it a lot. I would not use it in the middle of a conversation with someone.

Can we get back to talking about, you know, the topic at hand?

You just made the topic at hand cellphones again because you quoted it after several posts completely ignoring that.

It's not an extremist view to be against people who text while talking to you, they do exist, they're called tweens.

For some reason, I thought this was the 2000th video topic where I mentioned a smartphone as a solution and proceeded to ignore any posts after. My fault.

And tweens don't exist. They're just a product of your mind. Or something. 9th.door, all right!
