I thought that the Thwomps in the Pincer Room were kind of nifty in that they didn't look like they were supposed to get in your way that much, but rather create the same noise as the Megaspikes coming down on you just to throw off the rhythm. Of course, raocow completely turned that idea upside-down, but oh well.

Um, Raobert? I suspect you didn't really need to go through all that. You'll notice that you retained a mushroom in your box upon being crushed when you had a cape. Weeell, all you had to do was drop it down before that first powerup, which would have caused it to be a fire flower instead of a mushroom, retrieved the cape, putting the flower in your item box, and avoid being hit long enough to allow yourself to be crushed again, whereupon you would restart at the second midpoint with a flower in your item box. Complicated? Perhaps, but less so than going through the entire first part undamaged, I should imagine. And very possibly not unintentional on the designer's end!

Anyone know how that was made? I thought it was a layer 3 square with a custom scroll, but the "rocket house" changed where it was on the screen for the "climbing the wall" part.

If I had to guess, the rocket crate is on layer 1, the level is on layer 2, and the background was transferred over to layer 3 for this level. Given that sprites fall through the crate though, it could also be on the sprite layer.

Tough to tell without actually playing it.
