Anyone okay at japanese willing to lend a hand?

Post by raocow »

Yo!

Basically, I got a silly idea for the next atxs book, and me and AoD where discussing it, and figured that if we were going to go through with it, might as well go all out.

Basically, I'd like it if someone would offer their help to translate a sentence, a couple of names, and a whole bunch of verbs from english to japanese. At first I planned to just use google translate, but it'd be a lot neater if everything was more... well, 'true', for lack of a better word.

Either respond here or send me a pm, that'd be groovy!

Thanks in advance, yo!

Horry shit, I can help!

I'm taking year 3 high school japanese, but I'm so far ahead of the curve I should be in the elite 4th year class. I might be able to help, and have resources for things I don't know right off the bat.

There was a time when all of IRC was just typing japanese and I was sitting there looking angrily at my computer screen. Too bad those people never check the forums...!

I don't speak japanese but I have an IME pad and WWWJDIC
Also if this is for atxs I think semi-bad japanese translation would be funny too

For names you just want them written in katakana? IIRC some of the atxs characters had names that have a kanji as well. Like Eat could be 食 or イート or even タベル (if you want the name to sound as odd in the Japanese as Eat does in English, it looks pretty weird to me though, so I don't recommend that last one :? ).

I think they'd be better in Katakana as names that are not Japanese heritage are usually katakana.

If he wants the name to be something like Eat, then yes. But the word eat exists in Japanese too, unlike the name Charles or something, so they could choose to translate it as the Japanese word instead.

イート would be the normal way to go, but I wouldn't really describe atxs as "normal," so wanted to toss that out there. Seeing a character named 食 feels hilarious to me.

I doubt Eat would show up in this book, but I thought there were other characters named similarly.

But with the Japanese names there's no context and there may be a problem with double meanings (?)
And verbs are just kind of silly.

Dude, think about how weird names like "Shift", "Eat" and "Accelerate" sound in English! I think it'd be totally within spirit to translate them literally as the Japanese equivalents.

----In case this hasn't already been resolved satisfactorily through PMs-----

Honestly, anyone in this thread should be able to do this though. Even if you've never studied Japanese a day in your life, you can write out the names by searching katakana on Google and getting a chart. I can't imagine this taking more than five minutes even if you're looking at it for the first time.

Google translate would actually be fine for individual verbs, but I suggest and online dictionary instead as they tend to provide better context.

The sentence is the only thing that might require some knowledge of the language. If either raocow or AoD wants to post that here, I'm sure they'd have a translation of that in about 5 minutes. And if anyone is stuck with anything, feel free to PM me.

There might be some minor choices that may be better made by someone fluent, but I'm assuming this is more of an easter egg for atxs' English speaking readers anyway, so very, very few would pick up on them.
