Mario's Greatest Adventure!

Post by TheDestroyer »

Since this was well received back at SMW Central, I thought I would post it here as well.
Now, for the introduction (this was quoted from my thread):

Mario's Greatest Adventure!
(Also, to anyone who's a "Tales of" fan, see if you can spot the reference xD)
So this is my first hack that I've started about 3 months ago, and that's the basic storyline so far. Note that these cutscenes arent final, as I havent figured out how to do stuff like add a background to them and such (since they have to be Layer 2 levels), and the world name is definitly going to be changed, I just couldnt find a good name for the world this takes place in. Unless ya'll want me to keep it...
Anyway, I plan this hack is going to be a mix of Vanilla and Chocolate in terms of levels, although most of the vanilla levels are going to have a chocolatish swirl here and there. I added a new ability for Mario (might add more), custom music, custom sprites, ExGFX, a custom boss, HDMA, and I plan for this hack's storyline to be on the same level as Jacob's The Essence Star (although I might be getting ahead of myself now).
So enough of all that, you want to see what I made, dont you? Here ya'll go:

-Adventure Begins!-
Image
The start of the very first level, featuring some Map16 work, HDMA (Ice Man) and a Layer 3 Background (Lynnes)

Image
Take that, Rex!

Image
Whoa, Banzai Bill!

Image
A small bonus room, consisting of your usual "hit P-Switch, and grab all the coins" gimmick. This room might be changed, however. (Also, the coin's graphics are edited a bit to look less...weird).

-The Wacky Forest-
(Nickname - Map16 fun).
Image
The start of the second level, consisting of Tileset Mixing and a fitting Cluster Sprite (the leafs; thanks to Ladida).

Image
Yep, the new ability is Wall Jump!

Image
Just jumping around.

Image
Oh geez!

-The Water Caves (name may be changed)-
Image
This is where ExGFX really comes in. (And yep, the water and waterfalls are Exanimated).

Image
Not today, Putin' Chuck!

Image
Climbing a bit higher.

Image
Slidin' around.

-A Lake Night Stroll-
Image
Here's the thing for this level - if you know how to use Goonies to your advantage, you can get to areas with some extra coins/items that are just out of reach.

Image
*Gasp* Is that..?

Image
Its'a Raccon Mario time!

Image
Nearing the end.

-Lava Castle- (not the actual name, as giving off the real name will give off spoilers)
Image
A dark, gritty looking castle filled with lava with a fitting HDMA effect.

Image
Just climbing along for my life!

Image
Fire Bros, and...

Image
...Sledge Bros!
Beyond that is an unfinished room and the first boss, so I'll stop here.

So there's a pretty good look at my work. I also have another level, but honestly I'm probably going to scrap it, as I'm not satisfied with it. Besides that, what's left before I finish World 1 is to add another level (mainly a story based one), actually MAKE the Overworld, and make the Switch Palace.

So, what do ya'll think? See anything you like? Dislike? I'm willing to hear it.

Here's a recent level I've been working on, the Yellow Switch Pal-

Image
Err...Yellow Switch Fields? (This tileset isnt overused, is it?).

Image
Platform Riding! (Note - these arent normal grey platforms. They're the ones that move in a pendulum pattern - where it basically sways to the right/left and then back).

Image
Needless to say, I had some fun with this tileset. And Noteblocks finally come into play! (Having some palette issues with them, though, thanks to the background. Dont know if I'm going to keep them).

Image
Here's a good shot of the background - hailing from Asterix & Obelix, ripped by Hadron. I kinda got the feeling this background clashes with the FG, but I'm not too sure (it doesnt help that clashing graphics dont bother me at all usually). I know I could use that one other BG, but I wanted to try something different.

Here's my OW for World 1:
Image

And finally, my title screen (Note - I'm going to redo the font, as I'm not completely satisfied with it. I wanted to try a different kind of font, but eh):
Image
Try to guess who's in the silhouette (although dont blurt it out, of course, because some people may not know who that is).
What I can tell you about the silhouette, though, is that he is going to play a major role in the game's storyline a bit in (sometime after World 1). When and how exactly, I'm not too sure, but I'm playing around with a couple of ideas in my head about that.

So what do ya'll think?

Haha, why thank you, mr rom!

Ah, dont think that way. Maybe you just need more inspiration/practice? Because I doubt my OW would be this good without looking at other OWs and seeing how they do it. Maybe you can try that and get some ideas on how to make a good OW yourself. I'm pretty sure if I can do it, you can as well. :D

Oh geez, an LP request? If that's what you want to do, then of course, I wont stop you. Do you mean when the game is FULLY completed, though? Then that might take quite a while, but I'll be sure to make this worth playing till the very end.

Welp, minor update is minor.

I redid the font of my Title Screen in a style like SMW's title screen font, and I think I outdid myself this time:
Image
I made the "Greatest" and "Adventure!" from scratch, and it shows. The shading may be a bit too dark on some letters, and it may need a little more work overall, but so far it looks better than the last font by a landslide IMO. (Also, I already know about the "U" in "Adventure!" missing a tiny bit of shading, but it isnt like that in YYCHR. Same with the second "E" in "Greastest" having an extra black pixel next to it...).

And remeber the level I mentioned in the beginning post I had, but decided I wanted to scrap it? Before I do so, I guess I should atleast show you guys what I had in mind:
-The Chuck Aquariam-
Image
Yep, it's everyone's favorite type of level, a water level!
Image
Hmm, where does that pipe lead?
Image
Here's the gimmick - you use the pipes to drain the water to proceed further...
Image
And vice versa.
