The only excuse I have is that I already knew what I was doing before I "officially" played through the level (because I played some levels before applying for the whole testing thing), so I could just consistently beat it around my third try every time I played it and never really thought about the placement of the midpoint! It's a really obvious flaw though and we really should have caught it before the release
No no no, don't apologize! The level is a star world level, which is post-game, in a very hard hack, it's supposed to be a challenge! I hope nobody sees this level through "QubicTom goggles", by which I mean a novice trying something waaaay too hard for them! It would be like Frictional Games apologizing for Amnesia: The Dark Descent because it's too scary
era64 wrote: I'm pretty sure you will enjoy the World 5 level by Iso, even if it will take you a few episodes. As opposed to this repeat the same puzzles every time you die level. The problem with Chains of Atrophy is not length, is that it's really repetitive.
Also, I think that's the last of nerfs I dislike. Other ones are either pretty neutral to me, or improve the level (like that Chains of Atrophy nerf which should have been all along).
nathanisbored wrote:There's a lot of speculation about what Iso intended, but I assure you he didn't intend for people to hate his level, and he didn't intend for it to be repetitive and lopsided. It was an oversight, he fixed it, and I think he just really wants the guilt to stop :P
Because I really hope I didn't hurt Iso's feelings, I will make an apology video for him! The suffering is entirely on me being stubborn, haha!
morsel/morceau wrote:Chains was a level submitted early on before the dragon coin saving was introduced. I vote that you revisit the level and 'collect' (touch the outlines of) the dragon coins under the author's initial conditions: the entire level to be beaten without death, avoiding the midpoint and denying yourself the luxury of resetting the final room [!].
This is an amazing comment! You are absolutely, 100% right - by not patching, especially on levels tamed by the patch, I'm being a hypocrite. I definitely rely on the dragon coin saving feature, honestly I wouldn't have any dragon coin sets collected at all if it didn't exist, I'm just not good enough at the game. If I can use the dragon coin crutch, why do I refuse to use the level updates? I'm being stubborn, that's the honest answer, I think.

I really appreciate the comments here and on YouTube, and I hope Iso reads them too - everyone likes your levels, dude, don't let my experience (which was self-inflicted) make you think otherwise!

So in the midst of all this drama, I forgot to say congrats on beating Chains V1.01! Regardless of the situation, it took a ridiculous amount of effort from you, and it's certainly hard as hell. Based one what you said, I guess it took you almost 6 hours between the two play sessions? That's kind of insane, so kudos for your patience and determination.

Also the link to the talkhaus in the video description is broken.

Oops, thank you for pointing that out! Kinda weird that the link broke, since I copy-paste that part of the description from the same file everytime. File it under "YouTube being YouTube" I guess!

Hello QubicTom, hello Talkhaus :)

Tom, I am really enjoying your playthrough! I signed up here just so I could talk about this romhack, and encourage you on your playthrough. I found both about a month and a half ago, and I've been enjoying both lots. I'd say my skill level at SMW is similar to yours. I've gotten into world 5 by now, but I've been a bit cheap, bringing powerups into levels and using a savestate before entering the level, and even using savestates in about four levels or so. To atone for this, I've started a new game, trying to be more strict with myself. Although, I still used savestates at the beginning of each puzzle when I played Chains of Agony tonight. Maybe I'll go back and finish it proper another time.

I wonder, have you thought about switching between levels a bit? I think it might be less frustrating to practice some of the hard levels a bit each day you play, record an easier level, then come back to the hard level later on.

I think Angry Fish and Cave of Layer 2 are both pretty fun and straightforward. Angry Fish has fish, and Cave has Layer 2. Can't go wrong either way :)

Ohh, one comment about the latest two videos. I noticed you had trouble getting the grab block to hit the turn block in the one puzzle. The trick is to hit the block below it while pressing up (advice from 1-1).

Welcome to the talkhaus Dakota!! :D
I hope you find your second playthrough of the game just as fun as the first - I think your skills must have improved since your first playthrough, so maybe you'll enjoy the first few words more. It feels a lot better to legitimately beat a challenging level than to cheat through it. Playing levels without savestates will be an entirely different experience, it'll feel like playing a new game!

Your idea about taking a break from a hard level after a recording session is definitely one I'll consider more in the future. The only reason I don't do that is so I don't lose my muscle memory of the level, haha! But if it's affecting my mood, yeah I'll definitely try a different level, so we don't have a repeat of the last episode!

Because ice blocks have a time limit, I panic and don't hold the direction buttons properly, so when I went to throw the blue block up I'd smash it against the wall by mistake. It's another thing I need to improve :D

Stick around the talkhaus, there are loads of good sub-forums (forum games and general talk in the Gazebo section, and you can join video game projects, like the making of JUMP 1/2 (yes, half!), in the Project Showcase part of the talkhaus.) Also, remember to vote for the next level I play! :)

Why thank you!

I think you'll find that you'll build muscle memory more by practicing multiple times. Certainly more long-term muscle memory. Kind of like the difference between cramming for a test the night before and studying consistently over a span of time.

The biggest difference this time around is that I'm not bringing powerups into levels nearly as much as before. All but four of the levels where I used savestates it was before the start of the level, to bring the powerup, so I still played the level through without an interruption. I've got to say, it was your videos that inspired me to break that habit and start fresh. I can hardly believe the enjoyment I was missing out on in levels like Cool Kickin' and Spike Toss by starting out with two powerups! Interestingly enough, I'm almost caught up to where you are currently, although I still have quite a few levels I'll have to go back and finish again.

Okay, okay, if I have to pick, I'll go with Cave of Layer 2. Mostly cause I'm really looking forward to the level that comes after it! :D

QubicTom wrote:so I don't lose my muscle memory of the level
This is a myth, something I need to follow myself more often. Often times, if I give a level that I'm having difficulty some space with X amount of time or doing something else, I will come back and beat it if not on my first try, very soon after. I remember on one of nathanisbored's streams, he mentioned about avoiding getting bad muscle memory. So if a level is going poorly for a while, grinding at it won't necessarily make it better. It is funny how if I'm grinding, I don't think of these things! I just keep at it, stubborn to get it done. Try to keep this in mind, or don't. Whatever works for you.

Where's my JUMPhalf level???

Sorry everybody, second night in a row without a JUMP episode. I scrapped the recording because I was playing so badly (lost over 20 lives in the first two or three screens of Cave of Layer2, and it's not even difficult). I'll try again tomorrow. Blame real life stress, ha!

I vote for Red Switch Palace, and then Angry Fish, because I'm sure you will have time for it after this level.

Also, it sure was a while since I did post music information. And I won't for the next episode either, unless you do Angry Fish quickly enough to start the castle (but I doubt you will, especially after seeing the level author) or somehow you get flooded with votes for any other level (with one exception, but it's not a big exception) than Red Switch Palace or Angry Fish.

There was a prediction earlier in this thread that I'd make it to mid World 5, based on my performance so far. Assuming you're further ahead than that (I don't know, I can't watch your JUMP videos until I catch up  ), would you like to make your own estimate on how far I'll get? :P

you might be able to make it through world 5 if you are really ready to put in the time and grit, but there are star world levels that I'm less sure about. (I just started world 6 and it's pretty much world 4-5 difficulty as of now)

I'm actually kinda worried about your own encounter with those world 6 star world levels. They're PAINFUL.

Anyways, feeling a bit sadistic today. I vote Disarray. Jk. I vote for the red switch, though you'll most likely be able to do them both next video. As for all those mid-world 5 predictions, it's mainly because of a certain level by a sadistic designer that you're probably well-acquainted with by this point. I'm pretty sure around 75% of players put down their first mid-level savestate during that level. If you can beat that, you'll probably last until mid-world 6.

Btw, after doing the red switch, I'd say that you're ready for Disco Dance Party. I wouldn't call it harder than Chains v1.01, at least, and the red switch will make it more doable.

I vote for the red switch followed by DDP.

I'm not sure how far you will make it if you insist on beating all levels, but you will always have a marginal victory in hand because you are definitely capable of reaching and defeating Bowser as most of the hardest levels are optional to this goal (and these may be more palatable to you after your experiences along the necessary path).

Red Switch and then Angry Fish. Also I vote to do Disco before finishing world 4.

So yeah, dive bombing into the ground with a cape is actually super simple. The only thing you need is enough height when you start cape flight that he can go through the entire diving animation before hitting the ground, otherwise you will just belly slide.

Is that

Wigglertuff

? There were multiple changed levels in World 5.

If it is that level, I don't exactly mind supporting that. It makes the level easier, but the level in a question is a trainwreck not worth of being played in an old version (it still is a trainwreck in 1.02). Whatever you do however, don't play both versions, not worth it.

The worst level in the game IMO.

If it's that other World 5 level, then please no, 1.01 is just fine, even if raocow had lots of difficulties with easier version of a level.

First you are worried, then you vote for it.

If I can, I'm making an anti-vote for Disarray... oh, it wasn't an actual vote... whatever then. You aren't ready for it. And I do mean it stronger than Disco Dance Party, which I actually think is doable for you.
