Hey guys

Steam achievements are pretty cool right? You always wished there was some for actually good games right? Well I have JUST the thing for you

I found out about this website a few days ago and it immediately appealed to my love of collecting pointless shit. Basically it's a website where you can download custom emulators that automatically track and show you cool achievements for NES, Megadrive, SNES, GB(A), and even PC engine games !!! And even better, each achievement you get give you points, and there are online leaderboards on the website and everything !!! WHOA !!!!!

This is a pretty cool new way to play games you know, but also I know a lot of you play old games so this is a neat addition to doing that, I really like it

I'm doing Super Mario Kart because I like this game and I saw there was some funny achievements like "drive into a banana and cross the finish line in 1st place" or "fall off the track and get carried over the finish line to win the race"

and it was shit I used to do as a kid



Or maybe I'm being a super late idiot with this and everyone already knew about it idk

I'm honestly not sure how I never heard of this site earlier

This was the nicest way to replay the games that I wanted to play again. I'm gonna try this one day.

You know I would hope that fan-created achievements would not fall into the trap of being boring though.

"Collect 20 rings"
"Collect a feather"

If I'm going to be doing it ANYWAY it's not really an achievement it's just part of the core game, agh. It's a nice idea and I'd love to see some nifty challenges but looking through that just doesn't seem to be the case.

Interesting. There's even achievements for VIP and VIP 2. Possible ASMT achievements at some point, maybe?

Pretty much anyone can add achivements if youre good at tracking what values trigger an achivement so there's people who go for the easy stuff to say "Im helping!".

i tried the retro achivements for one game, only to find out it didnt work when you changed the game's langauage setting, so i haven't really tried it since.

Ahhh. I didn't think of how they actually have to figure out how to trigger achievements. It makes a lot of sense why peeps are choosing what they are if that be the case.

Still saddening but makes sense. I was looking at it from the angle most devs have where they can do whatever they want with the code.

According to guy who is doing whatever with Mega Man Legacy Collection, all games since like 2012 or 13 or something require achievements. Let's retroactively and arbitrarily enter them into the old games as well! Is it just me who sees them as such an unnecessary distraction?

Yeah that's really the most unfortunate part of this site, there's a lot of stupid filler ones like those you quoted, so you might have to dig up a bit before you find an interesting game to run. That's why I started with mario kart's since these ones are actually good

I'd totally add ASMT ones if I knew how to do it. Just beating it 100% on hardcore mode would be a feat in itself ! (yeah their emulators have "hardcore mode" that disables all savestates and gives double points)

Certain ones can be really good depending on the game, it's just that the peeps who put achievements have way too much restrictions on them/aren't brave enough to actually put challenging stuffs. For Megaman it's pretty ripe for challenges that players do themselves self-imposed all the time, no upgrades runs, hardest to easiest boss order. Zelda 1 with no sword runs...

And of course, the absolute best achievement anybody has ever put into a game that's completely optional and not required in the least, climbing up to the secret garden in Shadow of the Colossus 8-)

Honorable mention to VVVVVV Doing Things The Hard Way. Enjoyable as heck challenge there, for both an achievement and ingame optional trinket.

But yiss, the problem is that achievements typically aren't achievements. They're cannon fodder, a check list for devs to put in achievements that are as simple as "beat level 1" Rinse and repeat until checklist is done of achievement between the numbers 10 and 20. The concept of achievements is great, and one I love the idea of a lot. It's just misused and mishandled by a vast majority of devs.

Well, adding on to the achievements I mentioned in this post: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=15876#p301452

Journey is one of the only games where I seeked out a 100% for achievements since their achievements were actually pretty good, very optional-based and fun. In the sliding sand sections of Journey there's a trophy for going through 15 arches, as Miyamoto said at E3, when you see an arch you're personally compelled to go under it, it's fun.

They also had achievements for finding two easter eggs they put into the game that reference the game developer's past games

A flower to reference their game Flower. It was a cute touch.

Titan Souls has some pretty good achievement selection. http://steamcommunity.com/stats/297130/achievements Beat an enemy in under 10 seconds, kill the eye cube while pulling back an arrow (Instead of just shooting it from your bow), remove all the teeth from a boss and THEN kill it (when you normally have to remove only some of the teeth), kill the sludge titan with no more possible divisions (it's a slime that divides, so this basically makes you kill it down to the smallest possible parts)

I'm not too big a fan of the game personally but those are some good achievements to put in, though the game does unfortunately still have "beat a level" stuff.

A game that has TERRIBLE achievements but is indeed a pretty good game is Dark Souls. Just look at this shit tier list: https://steamcommunity.com/stats/211420/achievements/ There isn't a single, creative, unique, fun to do achievement in that lot. For a game that prides itself on difficulty they didn't even try here.

Trophchievements are an unnecessary distraction. Still, people seem to really like them, and I know I had my OCD phase with them for a couple of years before finally realizing I liked doing walkthroughs for the internet than shooting 200 pigeons for nothing. Honestly, I think that's why I don't like trophies or achievements. For many games, they replaced in-game unlockables. Some devs get it right at the very least.

It's less about beating the games and more about showing everyone online that you did.

That, and they function as suggestions as to what to shoot for, which is why I like them.

a lot of "clear___" achivements are not for your sake, they're for game devs to measure what percentage of people complete thier games and figure out sticking points and where people quit, as well as find out what side optional stuff they did.

100% colllection achivements however can go to hell.I refuse to collect every single weapon in dark souls, its such a grind.

i think a thing about achievements is a lot of people assume theyre expected to get them all, when they really arent. like getting every weapon in dark souls? thats not there to get people to get every weapon, its there as a prize for the few who do.
Well it is a decent hack but sometime its just too repetitif there no level that actually pop in your face and your like oh yeah that level they all ressemble themselves and just monster along the way.

do platninum trophies on playstation still require getting every single other trophy in the game? because that suddenly makes every achivement part of a completion checklist which defeats the point of "achive"ing something when its just suddenly a job to do.
