I played a touhoumon game once. I was miserable 90% of the time

a lotta pokemon fangames are hit or miss in terms of funness, but I think this one has a good idea of what people like

In that case, I'd suggest Touhou Puppet Dance Performance 東方幻想人形演舞.
It's not a rom hack, but a completely original game. It's actually better than the original pokemon games in many ways (no HMs!!!, better breeding, can teach and forget moves whenever you want!, etc.)

How long is this game? Is it still a demo?

Edit: I saw a trailer for Touhou Puppet Dance Performance and I think it looked pretty good.

It's pretty long and currently in Demo 5, and apparently the dev still has one more region to implement. it is a pretty big demo, all in all!
