Re: request grab-bag
i agree
i mentioned elsewhere that i think it would be really funny if this concept was done again but occasionally some deviations from the source material are intentional and aiming to troll the player a little, like a warp set offset by 1 screen, or a powerup box containing the wrong item. not so noticable that it draws attention to itself, just to the point where the less-experienced player might open up a smw video to double-check.

This was such a cool idea - I've been playing through the hack and it feels so bootleg, haha. It would be funny to watch a seasoned SMW speedrunner try to speedrun this one blind and see them get tripped up at all the "off" parts.

Not sure how "necessary" this is given all the good times with Celeste already had but might be fun anyway

seconding Jetpack PC from bucket.txt and adding in Lode Runner (just the original PC release)
if not for LPs then for just playing through the games. they're so good
if not for LPs then for just playing through the games. they're so good
another fucking post because i gotta state this
i only didn't vote klonoa or smw gaiden or anything of the sort because jetpack was actually super special for me as a kid, it was one of the first games i ever played with a level editor so i used to make some silly bad levels in it (they're lost to the ether now) and it was generally a super fun little lode runner like.
it's because of games like this and supaplex (dos boulder dash clone with a computer parts aesthetic, iirc there's a freeware windows remake) that i have such fond memories of dos shareware and lode runner deserves a spot if by technicality. do consider lode runner too as a game to play. maybe one of the pc versions, since they have all the levels? iirc i mostly played the nes version which only has like 50. fun fact there was also an sg-1000 version and it had like 70. cartridges too smol.
don't do championship. it's the romhack of lode runners (all the stages are actually made by enthusiasts in the level editor) but in a sort of kinda kaizo or jump or vip way where it expects you to know the ins and outs and minutia really really well, i have never played it and i dread playing it, but i kinda wanna, like wizardry 4.

So now that motion controls are reborn, I feel like suggesting a motion controlled game that actually, like, controls well...? But you might want to take that with a grain of salt because (a) I'm pretty sure it's been well over a decade since I played this game and (b) I have never ever run into a Wii game whose motion controls I don't think work like a dream (I've never played Secret Rings though) so I might just be a Wii-remote-whisperer.
Marble Saga: Kororinpa (Marbles! Balance Challenge in Europe) is a game by Hudson Soft (Mario Party, Bomberman, et cetera) where you use the Wii remote to rotate the world to roll a marble around. Kind of like that Labyrinth physical game if you've ever played that, but far more advanced. You can play as a variety of marbles, such as a regular marble, a baseball, and the planet Earth.
You can also play as a rotund cat:
This is early-game gameplay on easy, and the cat is one of the slowest marbles (hence the need to tilt really far), the gameplay becomes way more advanced, but I think this still gets the point across.
The game is actually sequel to a game called Kororinpa: Marble Mania (Kororinpa in the rest of the world), which as far as I understand is pretty much the same thing but different stages, but I've never played it so I can't really say anything about it.

Since it doesn't seem to be in the bucket already, I'm gonna toss in Remidoki (or "The Mistress' Heart-Throbbing Adventure ~ The Cursed Mansion"). It's a Touhou fangame starring Remilia, and it's a bit of a Metroidvania platformer (in a similar vein as Dust or Tails' Adventure, with a map screen and whatnot), and I don't lie when I say it's one of my favorite games ever. It's really good! Feels like the kind of thing raocow would like if he's ever in a 2hu mood again. It's not as hard as Desunoya's output, so no need to worry about that, although it has a harder Flandre campaign and some postgame challenges. It does have a translation patch, too.
Here's what I think is the trailer, which I grabbed from the author's website (be warned that it does have some spoilers near the end).

This is worth keeping an eye on. A Castlevania fangame heavily inspired by III and COTM has been announced. It looks pretty dang good. The trailer has a lot of story at the start, but gameplay begins at 2:18.

Lost Players is a REALLY good hack, but I feel like it may be too short of an individual project (I could see raocow taking maybe 3 or 4 videos max on it, maybe even less). I feel like it'd be better grouped with Hackjam as a whole, considering they're aren't too many Hackjam entries (12 standard entries that are all roughly 3-4LP vid lengths long) as well as two fairly easy kaizo entries by Lazy and Daizo that I think may pique his interest too. All the Hackjam entries this year were really interesting and I think well worth time playing, and I could easily see raocow enjoying pretty much all of them lol.

I for one have no issue with miniseries. However long the game takes is how long it takes.Heraga wrote: ↑1 year ago Lost Players is a REALLY good hack, but I feel like it may be too short of an individual project (I could see raocow taking maybe 3 or 4 videos max on it, maybe even less). Looks pretty great except for the unintuitive "can't jump on swimming type fish even above water" thing. Are per-level custom graphics not a thing in Mario 3 yet so they can look spiky...?

i mean, if you do it the ol' tilemap editor way, but per-level i don't think so. nothing that can't be added by asm though maybe

Re: request grab-bag
If raocow is playing "Krack's Kafe" as part of a hackjam let's play thing, just a sorta pre-warning that there's an update coming which includes various fixes and stuff. Also should warn that there's a kind of long intro cutscene which I know a lot of people on the youtube aren't fond of. Game's also sort of a sequel too, though granted you don't need to play "Krack the Hack" to enjoy it (and the update even has a summary of that game's plot).
On the plus side, it's not exactly a "dark mix-toned comedy" like Summoned. It's got a pretty silly concept, and is also a reference to these hacks.

Re: request grab-bag
raocow expressed some kind of interest in playing Getting Over It, as well as wondering how a traditional lp of that game would work. I'd like to also throw Jump King into the ring as well. It's atructurally similar to Getting Over It, in that you're climbing up vertically, and mistakes can erase your progress, sometimes a lot of it at once. But rather than climbimg sith a hammer, you'rd jumping. Using committed jumps, where holding down the button for a certain length determines the length and height of your jump. It's honestly not dissimilar to a golf game, albei one without a meter to look at to guage your 'swings'

Re: request grab-bag
Speaking as someone who hasn't played many games like Getting Over It and Jump King, but has seen a decent amount of content based on them... they seem to work well as stream games in part because the streamers have the chat to bounce off for keeping the commentary fresh and provide live moral support (or engage with the streamer in less helpful ways, but that still keeps the social wheels turning), whereas in an LP format that interaction is delayed until the video goes live. The streaming format also comes with less of an expectation for regular progress -- these aren't games you expect to beat in a set number of streams/LPs, you keep grinding them out until you've developed the muscle memory to not slip up at the wrong times.
Like, based on how well the player does, I could see LPs of these games having variable lengths on par with roguelike LPs, except aiui they don't have procedural generation to keep the gameplay fresh each attempt, nor any roguelite elements to make getting back faster; usually the closest they tend to have to checkpoints are milestones that are more difficult to fall through but still not 100% safe, and if there is a checkpoint system it's one with a limited number of restarts per checkpoint. A single mistake could potentially undo a video or more of progress, and a chain of them could send one back to the start, and with daily updates and two other LPs that doesn't leave much time to catch up between recording sessions; there could end up being a fair number of episode zeros. Overall, it'd be a matter of endurance to see how long raocow could keep up his commentary and playing before he'd either overcome the game or burn out on it.
To be clear, I'm not opposed to him touching these games at all; imo a full "play until I get to the end" LP of such a game is an experiment not worth seeing through to the end when rao has an ongoing queue for the A and B slots and the C-slot already dedicated to the behemoths that are the All the ___ series. But if he doesn't commit to finishing the games and approaches them like Nachos and Fried Oreos, or makes them some-offs like X Dive, then they could be fun explorations of that niche without overstaying their welcome.
