Originally I kicked this from my royal list cause it's run-based but since Downwell made it to the selection I won't feel bad for raving about ZeroRanger and posting it here because it's a great game

the real game that set a precedent for raocow to play run-based games is BROS

Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania had just come out, so it seems like the perfect time to recommend Monkey Ball! It's a fun platformer/ball rolling game where you roll your monkey in a ball to a goal! Normally raocow likes to play the original versions of this game, but I would recommend Banana Mania over the orininals for two reasons:

1, all the levels from 1, 2 and deluxe are in the game. Why wouldn't you just play deluxe then, you might ask? That's because while Super Monkey Ball 1 and 2 were on the gamecube, which is relatively easy to emulate nowadays, Deluxe was om ps2 and Xbox, which are...harder to emulate. The ps2 version would probably work, but it a not a good port, load times are increased and it has a lower framerate. Besides that, Deluxe kinda fucks with the level order in a bad way.

2, possibly more important than 1: Banana Mania does away with lives completely! This means that, instead of having to avoid game overing to unlock the extra and master levels(or in the case of beginner/advanced, not dying once), you can just play them. The big negative is that you're missing the original cutscenes from 2, and you have to play each smb1 challenge mode in one sitting (Expert I believe has 70 levels all things told!), but I think that's a worthwhile tradeoff.

Apparently Deluxe runs mostly fine on PCSX2 apart from two minigames which are highkey broken with no workarounds or fixes yet available. Source.
Red Screen in Target
Status: Active
Type: Serious
Description: This issue is for the minigame Monkey Target DX. Although the game doesn't freeze, you will get a red screen that renders the minigame virtually unplayable.
Workaround: No known solution

Right Screen is Cut Off
Status: Active
Type: Minor
Description: When you play the game at all you will see that the right portion of the screen is cut off.
Workaround: Do not use a custom resolution only use native and the multiples. (EX: 2x Native)

Angle Selection Too Fast
Status: Active
Type: Serious
Description: This issue is for the minigame Monkey Bowling DX. When choosing the angle to throw the bowling ball, the selection animation goes too fast making the game very difficult to play. When choosing the "baby monkey", the animation goes the correct speed. This gives the advantage to whoever chooses the "baby monkey" in Co-op.
Workaround: No known solution
PCSX2 runs relatively nicely apart from demanding higher specs than Dolphin, likely due to the Emotion Engine, Xbox emulation is the one that's still a bit in its infancy but xemu seems to be progressing at a decent enough speed. Dolphin got majorly lucky from having a strong team behind it for over a decade and starting really early.

I do second Banana Mania for ease of access (as it's natively on PC) and the lack of lives, though.

Lakitu's Great Adventure

9-level hack (think Kid Adventure) which is almost entirely vanilla in code, but has some really great and inventive graphical swaps, including quite a few newly-drawn ones like the player. It shows a lot of creative potential with the vanilla SMW objects and doesn't have any glitchy or overused custom objects.

There are plenty of Japanese ROM hacks that aren't on SMW Central, but in this case I find it curious considering it is on SMW Central, waiting to be moderated (https://www.smwcentral.net/?p=section&a ... s&id=28557).

An update for those unawares: Touhou 17.5 is officially out on Steam.

It could be described as Tasofro's take on Rabi-Ribi, minus the metroidvania part. Definitely feels like a raocow-friendly game, especially compared to the rest of the official games. Having just finished Reimu's route, I can vouch it is very friendly to raocow's preferred gameplay style.

It's basically a boss game where you go from boss to boss. There is a pretty interesting range of playable and non-playable characters represented, including some truly surprising choices.

The game comes in two difficulties (as opposed to four as is the norm for every other game in the series until now): Normal, which feels like a moderate but fair difficulty that most players of good skill can handle, and Hard, which having dabbled in feels a lot closer to the hell that was classic Tasofro fighting game story modes.

ah damn. not because that's a bad decision but because i've legitimately been wondering what enemies a touhou game would have outside of like, kedamas and npc fairies, if it were translated to another game style because i've been wondering about that for some fangame ideas. you've already seen super marisa world where everything was just "kedama of x color" or a boss. and i think some touhoumons and rtses have done it where the moriya shrine patchy made expendable doll robot things in the likenesses of everybody

SMW Remade from Memory: "We challenged ourselves to reconstruct all the levels, maps, and songs in Super Mario World (1994) based purely on what we could remember. The result is thoroughly unsettling. Please enjoy this testament to the fallibility of human memory."
