Here's a bunch of games I'd qualify as "favorites," in no real order (under spoilers because I'm wordy.)
Super Mario World- Man, this one's just wonderful. Great, colorful aesthetics, memorable music (even if it does the whole "remix-the-same-song-over-and-over-again thing,) and awesome gameplay. It's surprisingly replayable, too. The game can be beaten without a full understanding of the workings behind it (and honestly 100% doesn't require mastery, either.) However, you can do more and more the better you get, and there's just so much to do as you get better and challenge yourself more.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island- One of the first "collectathons." and it knows how to do it right. The graphical style is astounding, and some of the best music in the Mario series originates here. Traveling around the island is a great experience, and you feel like you're actually progressing through an environment. This game provides some of the first characterization of Mario characters like Bowser and Kamek, and the bosses are all delightful. I don't want to go overboard gushing about any of these games, but yeah. =P

Binding of Isaac (Sans Wrath of Lamb)- I like a lot of the Newgrounds flash stuff, but this is probably the best of the bunch, topping games like Alien Hominid, Time Fcuk and Super Meat Boy. The graphics aren't the best, but they have a definite charm to them. The game's entire theme is very interesting, and the aesthetic is pretty masterfully crafted. It does the whole "roguelike," thing really well, too, while blending it with Zelda-style dungeon crawling. The reason I don't include Wrath of Lamb in this is that the expansion, for those who don't remember it rolling out, was really sloppy. The game is still chock-full of bugs from it, the game's balance is all out of whack, and most games kind of boil down to a few simple variables. I enjoyed it, sure, but it really changed things, and not really in a good way.

Cave Story- Yeah, this one's a bit overplayed these days. First playing it several years ago, though, before we even had an official translation, was simply a magical experience. Pixel created a game wherein every aspect of it is incredible. Music, aesthetics, gameplay, level design, writing, everything. It's just really, really good.

Guitar Hero 2/3 and Rock Band 2- My first real foray into an internet community was the website Scorehero, where you go to post scores in Guitar Hero and Rock Band. I still have an account there and I check in from time to time just to see what's going on. Obviously the whole rhythm-game craze died out, but people still play these games. I used to play games in both series religiously, to the point where I could 5-star pretty much any Expert guitar song and a lot of Expert drums songs. I actually got into real drumming because of these games, and my musical tastes gained explosive variation as a result of them too. As far as actually being games, there are some iffy design choices, but these titles in particular are really solid. Few things have influenced me as strongly as the work of Harmonix, and I'll probably never get rid of my GH3 Wii guitar, even whenever it finally breaks.
I have a lot more to talk about, but I'm about to get interrupted so I'll continue later.

Well, since it's now "list all your favorites"... let's see...

In no particular order:
Suikoden 2 and 3
Final Fantasy 6, 7, and 9
Metroid Prime 1 and 2, Metroid Fusion, Super Metroid
Resident Evil 4
Skies of Arcadia
Zelda: Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, and Link to the Past
Final Fantasy Tactics
Tactics Ogre
Breath of Fire 3
Elder Scrolls: Oblivion
Dark Cloud 2
SaGa Frontier
Chrono Trigger
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, Harmony of Dissonance, and Symphony of the Night
Donkey Kong Country 2
Super Mario Bros. 3
Super Mario 64 (N64 original... despite that the DS remake adds a bunch of stuff, the N64 version still feels *better* to me)
And that's just the list of "games I've played through a flillion times". If we were to go by "ones I've played only once so far, but absolutely loved"... that would pad the list quite a bit. :P

Yeah. It should be 5 or 10 max, more is too much. It's favorite games not games you like. And preferably explaining why it's your favorite, listing 50 games is just dumb.

I'll post mine when I'm home.

......and since having alot of favorites is apparently dumb or somehow generally "just games you like" according to some people I'll pick one per genre:

JRPG: Mother 3.

Shmup: Crimzon Clover.

Action-platformer: Castlevania 3.

I adamantly disagree with this. Just because two games are games doesn't mean it's even possible to choose which of the two are better. There is no way in hell I could ever choose one single game from the list I posted and actually honestly claim it was my favorite out of the entire group.

Maybe some people actually have that many favorite games? There's thousands upon thousands of games out there. Personally I've played at least a couple thousand games in my time and liked a significant portion of them yet my list of favorites is around 30 games. Those aren't just games I like, they are my favorite games. If it was just games I liked then there'd be at least a couple hundred more there.

Even if you have many games you like, there is always, always a favourite one among them.

I for example wrote down my top ten favourite games and crossed the ones out that were great, but not as great as the others and in the end I chose The World Ends with You.

Donkey Kong Country 2
Persona 4
Yoshi's Island
9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors
Xenoblade Chronicles
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
I like RPGs and platformers it seems.

What? You keep changing the scope of the thread. I originally posted my two favorite games, then you changed it to basically "list whatever" at some peoples' recommendations, I posted that list, then changed it *back* when some other people complained.

Fine. I'm done with this thread. This is the second time I've been singled out for no reason. My freaking god, I'm sorry I happen to like JRPGs! I didn't realize it was a freaking crime here!

Why is everyone so caught up in the semantics? Regardless of number, this thread just boils down to "gush about the game(s) you like best." I know people here kind of get up-in-arms about random stuff here, but seriously, there's no reason for there to be drama in what should be a really lighthearted thread.

Here are some more of my favorites. Quantifying which ones beat which others is a wholly arbitrary exercise, so I'm not concerned with limiting my choices.
Irisu Syndrome- Probably not a popular choice for this type of thing, but I'm sticking to it. The music is really pretty and helps make the game extremely relaxing. At the same time, the way the story unfolds (as well as the story itself,) is really innovative and interesting. I'm a sucker for a lot of creepy stuff, and I think Irisu Syndrome's plot is extremely creepy, unnerving and well written. The gameplay, when combined with the rest of the whole, is satisfying. I've played this one quite a bit, and despite squeezing every detail of the story from it, I still like to open it up from time to time for a round or two.

Persona 4- I think a good portion of Talkhausers know why this one's so good. Story, characters, writing, gameplay, music, etc. There's a lot. For a bit of a funny diversion, let's look at how I ended up buying this game. It was only the beginning of the year when I bought and played this. This happened because I heard "Reach Out To The Truth," at the end of "7 Colors of Nico Nico Douga," which I got to from "8 Sides of Nico Nico Douga." So, in a super roundabout way, I can thank Jack Black for introducing me to Persona and the SMT series.
Also, Saturn Moriya, thank you for understanding how great Guardian Heroes is. It's rare that anyone even tells me they know of it. =D

My previous post was just a suggestion, if you think a top 10 is not enough for you then post more. It's just that I feel it's too mych but whatev. As for me I've made a top 5, but it was actually hard to make as there's game I really love but it's just that I love some a bit more so they're not on that list.
So here's my top 5 games, with comments.
Sengoku Rance
(warning, it's a +18 game)
My favorite. Yes it's an eroge, but even without the pron it would be my favorite, because the game is that good. It's a strategy game turn by turn where you have to conquer JAPAN (a fictional world based on japan in the sengoku era), you form your troups of warriors, foot soldiers, archers, tacticians, miko, monks, etc. and attack other countries to conquer them. It's the 7th game of the Rance series (currently has 9 games and some spin-off) but work as a standalone game. The gameplay is amazing, the story is great (and Rance is a great protagonist), the musics are superb, there's lot of replayability with different routes and a free-for-all mode, the H scenes are funny to read... It's also amazing to see that a H game is better than 90% of the non-H games. :D

Umihara Kawase DS
(all the games of the serie, though if I had to chose one it would be the DS version since it contain both the SNES and PS1 version. And if I had to chose only one.................Shun)
This game is one of my favorite. And you know why? Because it's some pure platformer games. The game has no story whatsoever, all it has is the gameplay, and it's godly. You use a lure that can hook to walls and have to find the doors to complete the levels. There's a lot of levels, and levels can have multiple exits, and multiples "ends" can be found (the ends are just the credits). The more you play, the better you get. What's great is after playing a lot, you get better and can do the early levels faster and faster, by finding shorcuts using your lure etc. "Finishing the game" (finding an credit exit) is one thing, but finishing all fields in the fastest time is the real challenge. This series is a must in the platforming genre, and you should play it.

Etrian Odyssey IV
(maybe all the other ones too, I only played the 3DS games yet)
I usually not that much of a fan for RPG (=JRPG, and I hate WRPG) but I played the demo on the eshop and loved it. What I love about this game (and the other EO games, minus the story mode of Untold) is the freedom. You chose your own characters and name them, you give them the skills you want, play how you want (hyper offense or very safely). The map system is also great, making you organize the dongeon maps how you want, and using strategy on the map to avoid FOEs is nice too. The story is minimalist and that's fine. There's also no main characters, every action are made at the second person, so it's up to you to imagine who is talking, if it's a party member, a npc that control the guilde or you as a player. It's up to you to decide and imagine how you play the game. The battle system is pretty great with lot of option to how to battle. It's also not that hard and doesn't require you to grind a lot.

Yoshi's Island
(the original, the sequels are bad)
It should be obvious, it's a great platformer with lots of things to found etc. My childhood game. Is it for nostalgia that it is in my top 5? Probably not, it's still a great game. However I don't like the sequels (the DS one, never played the 3DS one). They miss something compared to the original. No it's not nostalgia.

Super Smash Bros Melee
(Show me ya moves)
Well it's Smash Bros. I like all Smash games, but my favorite is Melee because it's faster and more fun to play. To be honest, I'm play both casually and competitively, and personally I like to play as both. Playing casually is so much fun, and playing competitively is also great. I have to say smash is the only fighting game I like, I don't like traditional fighting games because you're too limited to your movements. In smash you can run left or right, jump around the stage, go on platforms, etc. btw I main Yoshi. I also play Jigglypuff and Game&Watch.

Runners-up for top 10 (games I really like but not in my top 5):
Kirby's Adventure 3
The World Ends With You
Zelda Link's Awakening
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Ghost Trick
999
Pokémon Gold or HeartGold

Tied for first are Pokémon Mystery Dungeon 2: Explorers of Sky and Mario Vs. Donkey Kong, which are so thoroughly different there's absolutely no way I can compare them and declare one of them better than the other. Explorers of Sky has the best story I've ever seen in a game, there's no shortage of things to do, there's all sorts of strategies, the challenges you face and the situations you get into are never quite the same, you're in constant danger and constantly improvising, but it's not at all frantic, and you can take as long as you want to think. Losing is meaningful, making every decision important. Meanwhile, Mario Vs. Donkey Kong is a game where you jump and carry things through short levels. It is, however, the best platforming game I know of. Extremely simple, no momentum to bother managing, devious puzzles, and best of all, the extra content just never seems to end.

After those two are Wario Land 4. Kind of a mix between a usual platformer and an exploration type game, and always with the best of both worlds to boot. The one thing that mars it and puts it below the other two is the way some of the items you need in order to progress are hidden in cryptic, or worse, completely arbitrary manners. Still, it is very, very solidly above whatever 4th place might be due to how flawlessly it combines platforming and exploration to end up with a formula that works well, and is very much its own unique creation.
Those would be my top 3. I don't know what would be next on the list, but that's because these three games just stand so far above everything else I've played. Figuring out what's next would really only serve to undermine how much I adore the top three.

It's a difficult one, I'll grant that. I find my favourite games change with my mood, but I'll give it a go:
  • Tales of Vesperia
  • Eternal Sonata
  • Okami
  • Crash Team Racing
  • Xenoblade Chronicles
  • The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Can't really think of much beyond those that really deserves the list.

You can tell I'm a J-RPG fan, can't you?

Okay, a few games which are favourites. A top 5, in no particular order.
Sim City 4 - I keep coming back to it every so often, and have done so for the past ten-or-so years. Still the premier city simulation game - pretty much everything after it has ranged from mediocre to terrible. I can't imagine playing it without mods nowadays though
Audiosurf - Good to play whenever I want to get frustrated with my uncoordinated fingers.
Europa Universalis 4 - I never can fully figure out how to play a game by Paradox, but I can pretend.
Civilization V - If you'd asked me a while back, I would've said Civ IV instead, but V's expansions have been massive improvements on a fairly "meh" base game. also hexagons
Crusader Kings II - Conquer Europe, become emperor, die in manure explosion.

Here's how I rate games on my Backloggery:
  • 1 = vomitchan.jpg
  • 2 = bad
  • 3 = so-so
  • 4 = good
  • 5 = favorites
So, if you want to see which are my faves, just click here
