Re: E3 2014
shemp, you do realize that just because a game didnt sell incredibly well, it doesnt mean its not necessarily popular with some people?
you told me kirbys epic yarn didnt sell very well compared to everything else, but epic yarn's sales WERE quite a lot, just... they look bad in comparison.
the majority of gamers are not what we're talking about when we say things are "in". we're not talking about the $uper ca$h triple-a $pectrum. youre citing irrelevant results because this conversation isnt about money, its about what the people who play a variety of games like. somebody who plays a friggin fifa game probably knows little to nothing about kirby's existence in the first place. the majority of game sales are going to come from people who dont know - or care - a lot about what the industry has to offer, so those top 10 selling lists are not important.
also, minecraft is on that list and it is cute

Re: E3 2014
"In" means popular with most people. From the Oxford Dictionary: "in" (informal): Fashionable.
Superhero movies are in. Electro pop music is in. Novels about teenagers in dystopian futures are in along with their movie adaptations. Sports, guns and fast cars are always in. Most things are popular with some people. Death metal has a large underground fanbase. Would you say death metal was in? No. It's underground and not the majority.
If you have to restrict the definition of people in order to get the results you want by adding qualifiers like "play a variety of games" (conveniently not covered by any data and vague on what variety means) and "don't know or care about the industry" (unquantifiable and probably using the "the industry" to means "the parts of the industry I like so that I can discount, for example, someone who knows every COD like the back of their hand") in order to get the results you want, then your argument is bad and you would fail statistics 101 in the first week. You're as bad as the people who say that Wii Sports isn't the highest-selling game ever because it's "not a real game".
This is really the equivalent of saying "cigarettes don't kill people" and then, when someone else shows evidence that they do, qualifying people to mean "people who have only smoked once and old people who are already dying of other things". You're shaping the data to give you the results you want rather than looking at the data and inferring results directly from that. For example, I didn't expect Pokemon to place as high as it did. I had to adjust my argument to except Pokemon. I didn't go back and alter the data to remove Pokemon.

Re: E3 2014
Fucking sorry but I had assumed it was obvious we weren't talking about casual xbox players (i am using casual as a proper adjective here, not a blanket noun criticism)
This stemmed from you saying that you hadnt heard of anybody who liked Kirbys Epic Yarn or something to that effect. The data you showed wasnt from anybody who would care about Kirby in general in the first place. It's like - we live in Location A, say, and we poll people from all over the world about their thoughts on Work A. But Work A is only popular within Location A, so few people in the other locations know much about it. So it's deduced that Work A isn't popular around the world.
Which is true. But if we're talking about Work A's relative popularity in Location A, which I'd assume we would be on an incredibly niche video game/lets play/romhacking/etc forum (with this sort of community being PART of the overall community that is the hypothetical Location A)... then yes, it is popular.

Re: E3 2014
By "no-one" I was using the colloquial meaning of "a statistically low amount" rather than the literal meaning. I mean, most people say no-one liked Other M, but about 3/5 as many people liked it as the amount that liked Epic Yarn.
And why the well would you assume that "people" doesn't include the majority of people? Or even that "people who play games" doesn't include the majority of people who play games? The majority of people who play games aren't the super-serious self-professed hardcore who buy every console at launch and get into message board fights like this one. We are a tiny minority. If you're going to restrict down to that minority, then fine, Kirby is ultra-popular among these "people that matter", as indeed is whatever game you want to choose. That's the beauty of manipulating statistics.
Although
There's been numerous studies that prove that features that people deem cute are essentially features that children have. To make something cute, all you do is pedomorph it: to give it child-like characteristics (usually physical ones). If you look at a baby, its most distinctive unique physical characteristics are its large head and big eyes. If you look at anime drawn to be cute, for example, what do you see? Big eyes definitely and often large heads too. Same with many Pokemon.
Note the large head and big eyes.
Wind Waker, another example of cuteness in a video game:
Large heads and big eyes.
Animal Crossing:
Large head and big eyes.
Kirby (yarn or not):
He pretty much is just a big head with big eyes.
Another characteristic of children is higher pitched voices. Note that Pikachu has a high voice in the anime. Note that Wind Waker Link has a higher voice than any other Link, including child Link in Ocarina and Majora's Mask.
A final characteristic of infants is them deliberately acting endearing for attention. What does Pikachu do all the time?
Now for Minecraft.
Large head? Maybe a little, although his arms are pretty big too, but big eyes? Nope. And no-one would claim a cube is child-like. A cube has hard edges like absolutely nothing that we associate with infants does.

Although
The highest selling Smash Bros. game is Brawl (12.16 million). That means that there are at least 12.16 million people in the world who know about Kirby. That therefore means that there are at least 11.17 million people who know about Kirby who didn't care about Epic Yarn. There is no invisible Kirby problem.Leet wrote:The data you showed wasnt from anybody who would care about Kirby in general in the first place.

Huh? What's that screenshot from? It didn't fall within the top ten aggregate sales data for the year, so it's not popular.

Re: E3 2014
Did you know that cute is more than a statistic
I dont find most animals cute because they are animals and I cannot find them cute, and I dont find any babies cute because they are babies (my not-my-friend-anymore told me this meant i was broken but i think thats a harsh way to go about it)
in fact, the cutest voices for me tend to be more lower pitched, exactly the opposite of one particular aspect youve described
youve just presented what most people find cute, while my point of asking why pokemon is cute was to point out that its not as clear cut as most people think. i knew full well most people find pokemon cute, as well as why.

...Uh, so, are the announcements over, or will we get more tomorrow? I've never followed E3 too closely, so I don't know if they just do all their announcements on the first day or spread them out.

You say that like something that's cute can't have threatening things in it. You need something threatening to make a story. Even the most G-rated of G-rated kids' movies has threat in it otherwise there's no story.Clemasterable wrote:Yes pokemon is cute
I don't see why some of you guys are getting so defensive about being told that the things you like aren't popular. Just because something's not popular doesn't mean you're not allowed to like it. I like some music that's popular and some music that isn't. I don't go around deluding myself into thinking that everyone who dislikes the music that I like "is a casual who doesn't care about the industry."
Same with the games I play. For example, one game I played a lot on my GameCube was Melee. That was exceedingly popular by GameCube standards (7.07 million to return to the numbers). Another game I played a lot was Cel Damage. That sure as hell wasn't popular - 0.06 million. Yet I don't go around discounting all the GameCube owners who didn't buy Cel Damage or never heard of it as "casuals who don't care about the industry".
I'm fine with being in the majority when I am and fine with being in the minority when I am. It's not like it's something actually important like politics.
It is important to Nintendo though, since they need to make a profit to keep going. From a business standpoint I don't think it's a very smart decision.
Ultimately though, everyone is free to like what they want to like. Just don't go around pretending that you're the majority when you're not.
Speaking French to sound cool is so for the over 40-set. If you is young and use your verbs wrong then you is well cool now, innit blud? That post was targeted more towards Leet but whatever. I'm not saying that something kid-friendly shouldn't be threatening. And that's not threatening that's just flat out disturbing by the way. And compared to the Origins series and the manga, the games are so not intimidating. Heck, in the manga, the Elite Four are actually murderous psychopaths and guys like Lt Surge thundershock people until they die just because he feels like it. Blue also hides Pokeballs in her bra and busts her dress open because that's just how she is. The closest somebody came to that in the games is Ghetsis in B/W2 when he froze an entire town...and even then I think that killed nobody.Doctor Shemp wrote:You say that like something that's cute can't have threatening things in it. @shemp: youre still talking about the entire industry when i never was. youre kind of telling me i think things that i do not. i never even said i liked kirbys epic yarn. where did you infer that? because i said some people liked it? where did i say i liked it? youre basically telling me im just arguing my opinion, which im not :B

Really? That does sound a lot more serious! I can see why the anime at least was censored outside of Japan. So I guess the games are cute and the rest are semi-cute to not cute.Clemasterable wrote:That post was targeted more towards Leet but whatever. Man if you don't like the game then why do you keep inferring that the people who do like it matter so much more than the much larger number that don't? Where were you trying to go with this?Leet wrote:youre still talking about the entire industry when i never was. youre kind of telling me i think things that i do not. i never even said i liked kirbys epic yarn. where did you infer that? because i said some people liked it? where did i say i liked it? youre basically telling me im just arguing my opinion, which im not :B
And finally, on my earlier point on using "no-one" figuratively rather than literally, I would totally say that no-one liked Cel Damage even though I personally did and some others did. I've never met anyone who'd heard of the game before I mentioned it let alone actually owned it. I personally found it for $2 in a discount bin the year after it came out. I heard recently that it got re-released on PS3, PS4 and PSV as Cel Damage HD. That's total idiocy on the behalf of Pseudo Interactive. What did they stand to gain from that? Don't keep going with things no-one (here meaning barely anyone) likes! Don't make a game just for me and the other half-million or whatever other people who bought the first one. We're not worth it! Although the scale is a little different, I'd say the same thing towards Nintendo. Is it worth it?

That's basically it.
And anyway, I don't dislike the game either. It's not really bad but it's not really worth playing through compared to better kirbies.

Literally the only reason I never seriously got into that game is because it softlocked after every round last time I tried.
This is interesting news.
...What's going on in this thread again? Something about Epic Yarn being well-regarded by reviewers and a significant portion of the people who played it despite its somewhat low sales figures?

Just as a heads up if anyone does want to try the game, it is exponentially more fun in local multiplayer than it is in singleplayer. Singleplayer is just the multiplayer against bots.

Found another E3 video regarding the new Sonic game.
It seems okay, although the awful thing that hit me in the face like a brick was the music. It sounds like they're just using generic ambient music wtf heck!!!! What happened to the trademark outstanding soundtrack shenanigans that the Sonic series is known for?!
And also the lip-syncing was a little off at certain parts and I felt weird when Amy said "Nice kill, Sonic!" and a couple other little things but the biggest thing was the music.
Graphically, it seems decent, although some of the animations could have been better. Like how there's hardly a transition between the moving animation and the idling animation. But I'm hoping they'll fix stuff like that before the release because it'll look hilariously unprofessional if they don't.
EDIT: I just noticed that in the gameplay Amy said "Nice kill, Sonic!" twice within about 15 seconds. Hopefully that's not a sign of things to come....
