By the way, does anyone know how many coins it takes to unlock the Yoshi bike? Or is it random like the characters? I kind of want to be a Yoshi riding a Yoshi because meta

Everything is random. Kart parts were random in MK7 as well.Lunatic Quark wrote:By the way, does anyone know how many coins it takes to unlock the Yoshi bike? Or is it random like the characters? I kind of want to be a Yoshi riding a Yoshi because meta

Speaking of coin unlocks, a rather odd glitch(?) just happened to me. I decided to try beating all of the Mirror Mode cups so that I would at least be somewhat familiar with them, and after the first cup, I got the message "You collected 1500 coins, you have unlocked a new part!", so I try out the new part, which was called the Comet I believe, and wasn't used to the way it handled, so I decided to quit and try a different bike. After I quit and went back to the title screen, I got the message "You collected 1600 coins, you have unlocked a new part!", even though I only collected like 1 coin in the entire race before I quit. I checked which part I got, then backed out to the main menu, and got "You collected 1700 coins, you have unlocked a new part!". I kept doing this all the way up to 2200, collecting new parts for basically just going through the menu a few times. The only theory I can think of is that I somehow had a massive amount of coins that didn't "register" until today for some reason. I remember having an unusually hard time unlocking things for the past few days before this, so that might explain it.
And after all that, I still didn't get a Yoshi bike

If you play Online for a long time and collect hundreds of coins then yeah, you unlock 1 part at a time.Lunatic Quark wrote: Speaking of coin unlocks, a rather odd glitch(?) just happened to me. ...

Currently, I'm on the long wait for the Golden Glider, at 10000.
By the way, the Yoshi bike has the same stats and also inside drifting, just like the Comet, Sport Bike, and Jet Bike.

Ah, I figured it was something like that, I guess I just thought the messages would have popped up sooner or something, or I forgot to check one of my unlocks. Also, good to know about the Yoshi bike, guess I'll be practicing more with inside drifting after all (probably should have done that back in MK Wii, but I got lazy...).Ivy wrote:If you play Online for a long time and collect hundreds of coins then yeah, you unlock 1 part at a time.Lunatic Quark wrote: Speaking of coin unlocks, a rather odd glitch(?) just happened to me. ...

Just got the game and will probably be on for the next hour and a bit. I assume most of that will be spent on system updates and game updates but you never know. I'll be on again tomorrow anyway. If any of you want a game I just posted my ID to the ID thread.

Re: Mario Kart: The Game That Kills Friendships
Played the game for a bit and I have to say Bowser's Castle is incredibly visually impressive. I'm surprised they didn't whore videos of it out to every place they could because it really shows what the Wii U can do graphically. More importantly it's very fun too and really has the feeling of danger that Bowser's Castle should have. They really managed to work in a whole lot of different castle obstacles like ball on a chain and even the laser-eyed statues from SMB3. It's a big change from the N64's thwomps and bats.
The antigravity doesn't add that much to the gameplay, if anything, but it looks very cool. GX really used it to its full potential by having some tracks put you on the inside of a cylinder with free reign to go on any part of it and one even put you on the outside of a cylinder. In this game that doesn't happen but it still looks cool. It just doesn't play differently.
Lakitu pulls you back onto the track a hell of a lot faster. It really diminishes the penalty for falling off the track. On the one hand, it's nice when I fall off and don't get penalised, but on the other hand if I time my attack right to hit someone in mid-air I want them to feel the penalty. And if I screw up and drive off the track, like I did in Rainbow Road, I deserve the penalty.
I'm very happy to see that bikes have had their wheelies removed and now get the orange drift sparks. The wheelie was super-overpowered to the point where you'd be an idiot to choose a kart in Mario Kart Wii. Now they're just karts that turn differently which is as it should be.
Overall it seems pretty good so far. I haven't played the last two retro cups yet though.

It really is nice, you just have to get used to the rather different timing to "prolong" a drift sideways before a sharp turn. Generally you can make a turn right before the curve and still be safe, it's pretty impressive.Lunatic Quark wrote: Ah, I figured it was something like that, I guess I just thought the messages would have popped up sooner or something, or I forgot to check one of my unlocks. Oh my god! They brought back Tick Tock Clock!
Aaaaaaaaahhhhhhh! *runs around in circles*
Suddenly I've gone from having no desire to get a Wii U before SSB4 to 100% desire.
Neeeeed! The also made it look frickin amazing! I'm probably going to go into time trial mode and drive around looking at all the level design and details. Like all those drawings they have on the walls. :D It even looks more fun than the original (unlike the Mario 64 DS version >:|).
Super fragmented speech because I'm excited! *squeeee*

<- Go team Yeah Doctor Shemp.!
<- That's everyone being nice to me. ^^
I made a game called Utter Confusion! Play it! :D
It's a lot of fun and has been incredibly popular at every indie game dev party I've brought it to.

Re: Mario Kart: The Game That Kills Friendships
Having played the rest of the retro tracks, I am extremely impressed that they actually managed to salvage a decent track out of N64 Rainbow Road which is still far and away the worst track in the whole franchise. I've played online races where over half the lobby voted for the remade track. If you told me before this game out that even a single person would ever want to play that track I'd have called you a liar. They even managed to improve Sherbet Land which was my most disliked track of Double Dash. They haven't done much to fix N64 Yoshi's Island though.
Still, I think they'd be better off taking retro tracks that everyone loves and reusing them than taking retro tracks that haven't been used yet because they aren't good and trying to fix them to make them good.
Also battle mode is genuinely terrible now. Seriously, what the hell? Who thought that using race tracks rather than arenas would be a good idea? Even if they only used retro arenas, and even if they didn't upgrade the graphics for them or anything, I'd still immensely prefer that over what they have now. I think most people would too judging by how few people I've seen on online battle the couple of times I've tried it.
Still though, if they replaced battle mode entirely with arenas (as it should be) and changed the default post-race option from Highlight Reel to Next Race, this would be the best Mario Kart ever, in my opinion at least. As it is it's still the best Mario Kart for racing, but for battling I'd need to switch the disc for Double Dash. Bob-omb Blast is the shit.

Gold Glider hype
That took several 32 race cups.

Re: Mario Kart: The Game That Kills Friendships
Trying to get three stars on all the cups right now. Have to say that the hardest cup by a decent margin for me is the Star one. Dolphin Shoals is always tense since the track is so thin, and Mount Wario also gets nerve-wracking if you lose too much time in the second part of the track.
Really digging this game in short bursts at the very least, which has been different from my play it all the way attitude I've had this year with just about every other game.

I play 8 a good bit (Rosalina best character), though I've been trying to 3-star every cup in 7 for a good bit now. I think I've been spoiled by the simplified 3-star requirements in 8, heh. ^^;
If Mario has taught me anything, it's that most things rely on whether there's something good in a nearby box.

Re: Mario Kart: The Game That Kills Friendships
So after one week of playing, Mario Kart 8 is pretty good. I like the replay option. Online is fun. The battle mode is not that bad, but it's disapointing (and Yoshi's valley is the worst map).
I hate Metal Mario / Gold Peach, but I don't mind the babies. To be honest, my favorite character is Baby Daisy. I also like Wario, Toadette and Baby Rosalina.
