My skype notification noise is the shield deflection noise.... so watching a link only level is sort of distracting. Oh well. It's still pretty neat.

I did like how it opened up with Level 7 of Link's Awakening.

Re: He's Pretty Controversial and likes Hard Levels to Boot!
Well, there it is. I procrastinated the heck out of that level, and I kinda slapped a bunch of stuff together so it was presentable. Had I actually worked on it from the start, quite a lot would be...better. Or something.
The little elevator segment was pretty darn lazy, and as raocow found out, you really don't need to do much to get through there. You die more often in there by moving around and jumping.
The first half of the Zelda II part was also unfinished, I planned on having some variant of the spider enemies hanging around there. Also, the midpoint would definitely have benefited from a healing item. Not sure how I forgot about that.
Enemy placement in the cave was pretty lackluster as well, gotta say.
I wanted an entire section dedicated to the first Zelda, but again, I was running out of time. I made some rocks from the graveyard be sorta...invading the Palace, and threw in some Ghini's.
It probably shows, but the enemy placement was the last thing I did.
As a little side note, this is actually the first level I have made in SMBX. I never expected to get this far.

Re: He's Pretty Controversial and likes Hard Levels to Boot!
The Zelda level had a really neat first half, 2nd half might have worked better if it just more decending a tower that went to the zelda II dungeon tileset, then the first zelda dungeon tileset.
that song is forever burned into my memory as the worst 2nd level in a video game ever.Maiku Wotaharu wrote:Am I the only one who recognized the music inside the Voyage Toad was from the dreaded underwater level in "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" (NES)?

The sign says that the next world will have levels 36 to 11. I wonder how that goes.

Man, it seems like there's a ton of people who waited for the last second. I was the opposite. I ended up scheduling a time every day to make sure it got done and finished about a week early and had no idea what to add anymore. Looking back, maybe I shouldn't have submitted it right away and figured out how else to improve it. But at the same time, I had no way of knowing I would end up being one of many to use the same gimmick.
C'est la vie!
(Also, are submissions still available for A2MBXT, or is it way too late in the process for it?)

raocow, I don't think being Lu Bu would solve a lot of your daily problems. For one thing, the amount of rape and pillage that would be expected of you would massively cut into your video recording time.
Now, were you Xiahou Dun most of your problems would be taken care of, as long as the place you work at doesn't require depth perception. Or, if you've been keeping up with the series, Yu Jin wouldn't be a bad choice. His trident is OP as hell.

My favorite World 6 level was Descent of an Aging Link. I'm a sucker for Zelda II stuff and 8-bit stuff.

Hey, that one last level was pretty cool! Can't believe it's a first! As a little side note, this is actually the first level I have made in SMBX. I never expected to get this far.
Btw who makes collectathon levels with insta-kill enemies? That's a pretty bad design choice.

Some pretty neat levels the past few days, I really liked the Link's Decent for just what it was. It was a nice Lunk level.
Gonna also say the strange of all the insta-kill instances we've seen as of late. There were probably better methods in handling those places, such as the spikes in Fluffy and the Big Urchin guy in today's level.

I'm the same way. I actually spent nearly all of January working on my stage, bit by bit. I ended up finishing early, but that was only because I hit a block limit and had to cut some of the stage. Otherwise I'd probably have used up the entire month.RedMageMike wrote:Man, it seems like there's a ton of people who waited for the last second. I was the opposite. gonna go with decent of aging link as best level, it didn't have any backtracking or instakill liquids.
the city level in the dos version of the ninja turtles game, which has a jump that is literally impossible to do, making the game unbeatable.YelseyKing wrote: ...dare I ask which is the *worst* video game level ever?
Yeah listen to this guy, being any other character might be admirable, but you shouldn't pursue Lu Bu.Eathanu wrote:raocow, I don't think being Lu Bu would solve a lot of your daily problems. Re: He's Pretty Controversial and likes Hard Levels to Boot!
The Pikmin 3 reference in "Submarine of the Mushroom Kingdom" really made my day! ("Whiptongue" is a Whiptongue Bulborb, an enemy in that game).
As for the rest of the level, I thought it was very neat. Like Horikawa said, While the dragon coins aren't necessary for completion, they do add a fun little challenge to the level, as the level (at least the first half) promotes exploration without being too complex. The only real problems with it are the insta-kill urchins, and that the electricity is difficult to see when it is overlapping the water's surface, but aside from that it looks like a lot of fun!
For "Descent of an Aging Link", it looked pretty good for its purpose (though, I've never really played any of the Zelda games, so its more difficult for me to judge a Zelda-styled level). All it needed was less fireball/podoboo generators at the elevator section and maybe a heart after the midpoint.

Re: He's Pretty Controversial and likes Hard Levels to Boot!
Most of the levels in this world were really neat, even if a lot of them wore on a little bit too long for my taste, the creativity on display is very, very prominent and made these really fun to watch and it's beginning to become very obvious that the designers had a lot of fun making their levels. To all you folks, great job.
That being said, man I'm psyched about the last two tiers. Neither of the two folks whose levels I've been really looking forward to have come up quite yet, and I can't wait to see what they made for this thing.
Yeeeeeah, pretty late to the party for this one, but I've gotta agree with this. From a technical standpoint, I thought it was super cool and neat, as that dude's stuff generally is. From a gameplay and actual level standpoint, though, what you end up with is a boss that fires super fast moving projectiles that you have little to no let to get over. That's kind of the thing - I love technical or creative neatness, but it's gotta fit into the context of the level for me, and although that boss had a lot of neat stuff implemented, it just wasn't fun as a battle.Little Ruin's boss is glitchy and unfun.

No seriously, that's it. Without the boss and if it bothered to follow the gimmick, it'd easily have been up here.
What exactly was the categories and scores for each of them?

All of Horikawa's score breakdowns are in the first post. Little Ruins got:
EDIT: beaten :(
The other judges haven't posted their category breakdowns, though.Music: 10/10
Graphical Choices: 9/10
Composition: 9/10
Adherence to the Level Name: 0/10
Creativity: 16/20
Fun Factor: 19/40
Bonus: 0/2

Re: There's Ignoritus, A Wild Reviewing Rover
Those numbers look too inflated. A few of those numbers could be shaved off pretty simple.
Music: x/5 - Five is enough to scale all sorts of way music could be implemented. (Quality of music, application of it in terms of the level's atmosphere, etc.)
Graphical Choices: x/10 - The way this seems worded feels off to me. Could vary from which type of graphics are used to how they're utilized.
Composition: x/10 - What exactly is graded on this?
Adherence to the Level Name: x/10 - See bottom.
Creativity: x/10 - I would personally combine this with the below category, but.
Fun Factor: x/30
Bonus: x/2 (Easy Name: 0, Medium Name: 1, Hard Name: 2)
Mulligan -5*(number of mulligans)
Scoring for level names and penalizing entrants for essentially being unlucky with what they got is really stupid. Just do a straight LDC with no "gimmicks" attached.
