YCZ hates you, it's the only logical explanation. It only gets worse from now on. Star world 3 will be...a thing.

The custom Clawgrip boss is terrible. Go back and play Mario 2 to see that the official Clawgrip boss is not only less of a spazz, but it even telegraphs when it's going to throw a rock. Finally, Mario 2's "hold objects over your head" system is much better for this kind of thing when there's a constant threat of losing your held item just because it's held in front of you.Zyglrox Odyssey wrote:Is it just me or does that happen to him literally every time there's a Clawgrip?the video wrote:raocow dying like 10 times in a Clawgrip fight again

The joke would remain, and the earthquakes would only be annoying (incredibly annoying, albeit) without being life-threatening.
Still not a great level, but it would have been playable.

Star World 3 will be a thing, but at least those levels are well designed. I actually had fun with Star World 3. Nothing in this game is worse than today's level.Yikes wrote:YCZ hates you, it's the only logical explanation. It only gets worse from now on. Star world 3 will be...a thing.

The author of this romhack does not understand the difference between "bad in a funny way" and "funny because it's bad." The thing he is referencing is (supposed to be) the former, but he attempted to emulate the latter, which is just terribly stupid.
Re: S.P.L.U.C.E. - Who's that Pokemon?! --- It's Mario!
He's not. He's telling people to stop practically firing death threats at the creator because he made a trash level in an area you would never find if you were simply going through the normal game. Most of the design in this hack is actually pretty good compared to a lot of other hacks out there and the fact that people are shitting on the creator because he incorporated a joke (albeit a horrible one) that unlocks absolutely nothing is pretty sad.OverlordSean wrote:Stop being a bad romhack apologist

Yeah, what the hell was that about? Is it like SMW's Special world where it's just a graphical change?raocow wrote:but... but it made a face appear on the wall!!!Jesuiscontent wrote:Does the author seriously need to spell out "this unplayable garbage joke level is NOT required for completion and doesn't unlock anything" at the beginning of levels like this so that you don't feel forced to beat them?

The level design in this hack is pretty good when it's just platforming with very minimal gimmicks. Once it starts basing entire levels around said gimmicks (Like the minecart stage) It kinda fails, mostly because the gimmicks don't work very well at all.S.N.N. wrote:He's not. Honestly, I think the vanilla version has the potential to be better than this one.
Re: S.P.L.U.C.E. - Who's that Pokemon?! --- It's Mario!
Good grief that level was painful. Over the last couple of videos I'd started to like the game a bit more, but that just destroyed any positive feelings I have for it. I get that it was a joke level and the rest of the game is more or less okay, but it was still hilariously unnecessary. I don't blame you for using save states at all, raocow.

That level reminded me of a level I've played from a romhack that featured a stupid amount of earthquakes, but that level was put into a blender.
Also, was the midpoint (I think it was a midpoint) missed on purpose or was it just not noticed?

He got the midpoint at one point, died, and restarted at the beginning of the level. i.e. it was a useless midpoint.Pholtos wrote:That level reminded me of a level I've played from a romhack that featured a stupid amount of earthquakes, but that level was put into a blender.

... also what the hell, that level. Pretty sure people above me have already said what needs to be said, but seriously. What the hell.

Sure seemed like you were defending its presence by saying it's not mandatory.Jesuiscontent wrote:How in hell you managed to interpret my post as a compliment to the game is beyond me

Anyways since I'm here I'll actually elaborate instead of being a tool.
The problem with this level is that it is representative of larger issues in the hack. The game is anemic on saves, the difficulty is advancing fast and the hack likes introducing gimmicks that are finicky at best (the mine cart). The inclusion of all these references seems like a severe case of misplaced effort. In fact, I feel as if this hack is trying desperately to fit in. The difficulty and referenced lead me to believe it is a hack meant to impress a community instead of something which stands on its own.
Basically I hate this level because I feel it represents a mentality which compromises the integrity of the game

You were not supposed to play it completely, just waste two or three lives on it, laugh and move to the real levels.
Also big spoiler (do not read):
And I though you switched to Snes9x why are you still using ZSNES?

Clawgrip was in SMB2? It has been a very long time since I played through it but I only remember the Birdos, Mouser, that Hydra thing whose name I've never known, and Wart.Mineyl wrote:Go back and play Mario 2 to see that the official Clawgrip boss is not only less of a spazz, but it even telegraphs when it's going to throw a rock.

Editing in a crazy Lavender town theme seemed appropriate

Well, at least that level was accurate to the source material: terrible garbage that uses "IT'S BAD ON PURPOSE!" to try and excuse how shitty it is.
Re: S.P.L.U.C.E. - Who's that Pokemon?! --- It's Mario!
Yep, Clawgrip is the boss of world 5. I believe there are several warp zones that will allow you to bypass it, so once those are found, it's understandable that someone would never play 5-3 again. It's been years since I've played it, myself.Alice wrote:Clawgrip was in SMB2? Mr. Hydra guy is called Triclyde, by the way. :)

Re: S.P.L.U.C.E. - Who's that Pokemon?! --- It's Mario!
Ah, that definitely sounds accurate after a quick googling of the SMB2 warps. I usually took a warp in 1-3 to world 4 or played straight through to world 4 then took the one from 4-2 to world 6. I've played completely through world 5 only once or twice before.Mineyl wrote:Yep, Clawgrip is the boss of world 5. And after reading that I apparently knew Triclyde's name and had just forgotten, whoops.
