I think you're pretty safe watching this even if you're avoiding spoilers, there's a new mechanic talked about but that's about it. This one's really safe I think for that and just about getting peeps hyped about the new season.

Man, I don't know if it's because I'm pretty unfamiliar with CCGs or what, but that felt like a lot to take in. I realized after we were done that we even got some of the rules wrong with regard to Troublemakers. It seemed like it would be fun though, once I actually know how to play!

Did anything happen in s4 that furthered the plot? As far as I remember, they didn't expand on flutterbat, which probably factored into the reason I stopped after pinkie apple pie.

Watching the wrong show if you want continuations haha. Its an episode to episode show where stories are usually self contained for television audiences.

Something big happened in the finale that changed a major location in the show.

well, and there was some character development and a very minimal side arc that both led to the "something big happening".

The Flutterbat thing was kind of weird. The early part of season four had these weird stingers at the end of some of the episodes (Castle Mane-ia also comes to mind) that didn't really amount to anything. I can't think of anything like that happening in previous seasons, and they stopped doing it after that, too. Not sure what the deal was.

But season four also has a season long story arc (actually two, although one is more of a "Grand Galloping Gala" kind of arc) and some very important developments. Also there were some good callbacks, and in particular, the events of

It's About Time

end up actually being important to the plot. I'd say in fact that S4 has some of the strongest continuity in the entire show, particularly with regard to the key episodes.

It's leaving things hanging for the sake of it for a good laugh, or to get imagination going (Episode endings like that are the bread and butter of fan fiction writers).

Like, that kind of thing happens all the time in cartoons, but the fact that it hadn't happened in FiM before made me wonder if they were actually going to follow up on it.

Edit: To clarify, I feel like FiM is one of those shows where everything that happens is canon. It's not one of those shows where things just happen for the sake of a joke and then are erased from existence (except maybe some things where Pinkie is involved). So, like, does Fluttershy just have a fang now? Is there a ghost in the old castle? I dunno.

Castle Mane-ia was written by Josh Haber, a newcomer writer to season 4. Flutterbat was written by Merriwether though, who's been there since season 2, so hey.

So I read through like 2 pages of this thread, and I just... Stopped.
I think it's that I'm still self-contuous that I like ponies.
I've only watched some of season 4, and I haven't gone back, even though I've been in the fandom since right after the end of S3.
Part of why is that I joined through a portal 2 crossover fanfic, and I headcanoned basically every character with different voices (The biggest divide was that I made P4A Chie the voice of Rainbow Dash).
I have left the fandom in the past, but I am returning to it now with a 13 fic multiverse all planned out, covering two different Equestria's and Two different Earths. It's probably going to take years to finish, so I'm trying to get a variety of Co-Writers to help.
