I'm not one to know, but I presume it's similar to the Pokemon yellow Tas posted last year where they figured out how to inject their own code into the game via controller inputs, then wrote their own code and converted it into a controller input.

I watched the segment Alex was in today, and I have to say: I was just expecting the crazy-glitched run Masterjun did last year, but I was not expecting THAT! (But I still recognized the first part)
