Super Mario World Returns - No Tools!

this is the place where lps are being talked about. it's important to talk about games being played on the internet.

SMWREX seems to be an eternal demo, because unless no one has managed to find a completed version, I've never seen anything other than this demo version. So think of it as a shorter SMWR hack.

SMWR2 is without a doubt a good hack and KT is one of the best hackers ever. That being said, I still think the game doesnt have a very good appeal and it is a gfx hack basicaly and that is becoming a bit boring to watch and play nowadays.

The biggest problem is that the levels still are a bit repetitive. A whole lot less than before, but it is more of a 'play' hack than a 'watch' hack I guess.
But I do look forward towards Bowser's castle and the Star World.

yeah, I mean, I still watch them for raocow's commentary, but sometimes it's like, "oh, a new world, woohoo. now we get to watch raocow play practically the same level five different times, each time repeating different sections of the level a few times in a row."

This hack series really burned me out on Mario World. For the first time since I got "caught up" on raocow's LPs, I find myself doing something else and just listening for raocow to say things that make me look over.

It's going to take something really cool to get me to start caring about SMW romhacks again, or maybe a break from them altogether. The levels in Returns 2 may feel like they've got more variety from the player's point of view, but when you look at them, they still look like the same segment over and over.

Oh well, at least the commentary is still good. It's not your fault, raocow, except maybe in that you picked the hack. It's just... not the kind of thing that holds a viewer's attention.

It really isn't a bad hack. The levels are mostly well designed and challenging without being unfair. It just does absolutely nothing new, and a hack like this just can't hold my attention after seeing raocow play through hundreds of more interesting levels, especially when he's also playing a game as neat as Untitled Story. Even something simple like more custom sprites would have made this series a lot more entertaining.

You know what would have made a huge difference, and is pretty shallow?

Different music.

I think a lot of people are forgetting that this hack is very dated by now. The series is from like, 2004, 2005 or so, back before customs sprites, blocks and music were the norm in hacks. So, while the level design is still not the greatest, you can't fault it for not having those things listed simply because SMW hacking hadn't come that far yet.

Oh I agree, I was just following the bandwagon there.

Though yeah, lots of peeps don't seem to remember that (although it doesn't excuse the repetition problem!)

As I said earlier, I think you'll have at least a little bit more fun with the third game in the series. I find it to be a little bit more creative and the repition has gone down a bit as well.

I'm not faulting the hack itself. If I had never seen a Mario World hack before, it would floor me. It's obviously quite good by the standards of its time, but it doesn't do anything I haven't seen in countless videos before it.

I agree with this 100% - because raocow only plays "quality hacks", we've essentially been spoiled. We've seen all the "amazing" ones and have come to expect a higher standard from ROMhacks - puzzles (SCW), ASM gimmicks (:P:P:P), amazing level design (TSRPR), music (RTTC), or all of the above (VIPs). But the problem is, the "amazing" hacks are few and far between, and we're left with "good" hacks. The SMWR series has few faults, and is "amazing" when compared to the original SMW or to other hacks of its' era, but no matter how you want to spin it, it's pretty mediocre when compared to what we're used to seeing.

Oh man, those levels SURE were incredibly difficult, that's why raocow finished the entire star world except for that one secret exit, in 1 video. Maybe tomorrow we will see the end of this game?

Would this be a good opportunity to plug the Collab hack?

Personally, I've liked the last few videos. SMWR2 is a step up from the first game, even if a couple parts still get repetitive. Daarkbuu's comments are making me look forward to SMWREX, especially as AUS seems to be coming to close. KT may be a jerk sometime, but he seems to get better with age! Hope it holds true.

That last level actually was pretty funny and innovative for it's time. I like the star world.

It's like the star world is on another plane of 'quality' completely, for some reason.

I also really enjoyed watching raocow play through that one moon gathering level. Must have been pretty radical for the time!

That last level made me think - Is it possible to make a hack that's basically one single level done like that, but huger?
