h00rayz for eurovision!

Post by Paralars »

Germany won the Eurovision Song Contest!
After many years of crappy contribution, Germany... won? Hell yeah!
Image
What is Eurovision you ask? It is the most popular TV event of the world, where the best singers from Europe participate and everyone votes!
And due to an incitement of the show, there was a whole-Europe-wide dance for like 10 minutes!
Now that is awesome!
All the other participants were so awesome too
I'm probably not the only one who watched it am I.
Hooray for all the great European music!
And a hooray for awesome Germany!!

I've never heard of it but I live in a little culture bubble called the U.S. where we export culture but refrain from importing it

Also that lady in the middle looks like she's got some sort of alien parasite latched onto her. She should probably get a cigarette and burn that guy off or something.

Here is the one lesson in life that you need to understand:

Eurovision Sing Festival is TERRIBLE!!!!!!!

It isn't about the music (which I understand since all songs suck), it is about how many neighbouring countries you have, (Croatia giving 12 points to Serbia. Portugal giving 12 points to Spain etc.)

Oh well, I can't stop you from watching it. As long as you allow me to boycott it for the rest of my life.

Germany's song was pretty bad. tho to be fair all the other songs where really really bad so I guess it's ok.

EDIT:
also kilon you're missing the point of watching it. the point is is to make fun of it.

some guy called Terry Wogan used do the voice over presentation here, he just used to make fun of all the acts and such. he was the reason people used to watch here.
tho this last year he retired from presenting eurovision so instead this year I followed along with Charlie Brooker and Danny Wallace on twitter making fun of all the entries.

with those two commentating along on twitter it made watching it super awesome this year.
fun times.

I was too busy playing in a gig for celebrities to watch Eurovision (note to fishy, being the only other Briton here: it was Declan Donnelly's parents).

Yea, yea, all this block voting bullcrap makes the Eurovision kinda pointless. Although at least a country from the best west side of Europe won it for once.

Also, LOL @ the UK coming dead last again. Best moment of the night had to be when Georgia gave Belarus 12 points putting them ahead of the UK :D

I honestly don't see why the UK even bothers with the stupid contest. We actually have taste in music (well we're capable of it at least), which is far beyond the rest of this daft continent. Then again if our entries are shit, then I guess that the whole taste thing isn't even relevant.

Also, it was a function gig. It's a six-piece band with a piano/bass backing track that plays typical function music. It means that we play a lot of motown and soul.

I only watch it for the sake of entertainment and in hopes of hearing some good songs, basically. I couldn't care less about the scoring, every year is pretty much the same thing with votes seemingly being handled out of popularity and country friendship rather than about the songs themselves. In short I just watch, pick my favourites and enjoy the show.

My favourites were Belgium's "Me and my Guitar" and Greece's "OPA!". Germany's "Satellite" was a very catchy song and I liked it too, though to be honest Lena's performance wasn't kind of a mixed bag. I understand she's young and stuff and has things to learn, but she acted like more of a teenager rather than a singer. The way she moved on stage and the "What, do I have to sing again?" were both hilarious.

Living in Portugal, I could say our entry was somewhat better than the last years as I recall. It's a bummer though that the song was in Portuguese. Actually, it felt like the majority of the finalists went for an English song this year. What happened to the love for their home language and culture? I recall my mom saying that Eurovision used to be more spectacular in the past for that reason...

I first discovered Eurovision through the something awful thread a couple years ago, and I still don't get whether this contest is supposed to be taken seriously or not.

On one hand you have amazing entries like the 2008 winner and of course this year's winner.

But then you have entries like Dustin the Turkey and Chiki Chiki and... well, just watch this.

Seriously, what's the deal yo?

some countries take it really seriously, other places such as the UK just like to watch it for a laugh and couldn't care less if we win or lose really.

Oh god, don't remind me of that load of tripe... How on earth we decided to send him when there were plenty better songs available. Especially from one of the people he beat in the national final!

Calling all the performers and their songs bad is a bit disrespectful, watching solely for making fun out of it as well. Sure there's always something around that's hard not to make fun of, but there's always a few good songs to be heard as well. I agree however that Germany wasn't one of them and around every other of the following, like, 10 songs, would have deserved winning more. Than again this is a contest about what people like instead of what is good, so one shouldn't take the result too serious.

I really liked that one. o.O
Not as much as the Slowenian Entry, though, which didn't make it to the finals as well.
Oh well, at least out of what I liked Armenia and Denmark survived this semi-final.

Well I guess the entirety of the UK is once big pile of disrespectfulness, seeing as this is the only reason anyone watches the eurovision here.

Well, all these people perform at their own free will. So laughing at them for failing so miserably isn't a bad thing as you know it is going to suck and if you want to do be there yourself you are just an idiot. And then you deserve to be laughed at.

Yeah, because some acts have some comedy value the whole thing is a joke and all musicians there have to be laughed at, exactly...
That's why, for example, the Turkish act won the "Best European Act" award at MTV Europe Music Awards in 2009... not going to say those MTV awards mean too much, but at least they are a slight hint that there are perfomers at the ESG that laughing at for failing at making decent/good music is just stupid.

Actually I'm not laughing simply for the fact that I'm not watching it anymore (thank god) but I just have zero respect for anyone there. If I had some respect to begin with. That or I simply hate (is there a stronger word for hate?) all the music and commercial stuff around it.

SayAnything wrote:Maybe I'd just have to see one of these things but from what I understand if some countries take it seriously and others think it's glue-eating retarded then those who make fun of it seem to just be laughing because they don't like the music???

I'd love to be able to turn on a Lady Gaga album and start laughing hysterically whenever I get bored but it doesn't work like that for me.
It helps that I was following people on twitter who where making fun of all the acts e.g. Charlie Brooker.
