Good hacks to play without savestates?

So I've been playing Romhacks for a while now, but I've always played through them the old raocow way (ie. state spamming and rewinding through the easiest of levels). Seeing some recent videos of people playing romhacks, I've been inspired to start playing them legitimately. What are some easier romhacks (or romhacks with good difficulty curves) that I can start with?

Uhh, good hacks to play tool-less? Go with what you already have and practice them until you can go through the levels without savestates.

I did a run of Vip4 savestateless, and I really enjoyed that. Well it wasn't completely "clean"; I used them to avoid grinding 1-ups. If I died, I'd go back into the level, place a savestate as soon as it started, and if I died I'd load it. If I got the midpoint and died again, I go back into the level and place a savestate.
Just saves time with unnecessary life grinding.

Well first of all, you should beat Super Mario World, and be able to play around with it, too.

Well first of all, you should beat Super Mario World, and be able to play around with it, too.

The endgame of Super Mario World and the endgame of most romhacks are on two totally different planes of difficulty, though. I think Super Mario World is one of the easiest games in the series. It never really throws anything difficult at you except for a couple of the special world levels.

These are all good suggestions though. I might take a look at some of Gamma V's stuff because I've never played it before.

That's the best advice you can really give here. Play whatever you want how you want to play it. If you want to try a small challenge, try to minimize save states in whatever you play before trying to eliminate them.
