VIP Translation Community Questionairre - Missing Boxes?
Re: VIP Translation Community Feedback
I would say to keep it as Stupid Horse with an explanation in a text box. raocow is a huge reason any part of the English-speaking world even knows about the VIPs and it's a lot easier for us English-speaking people to say Stupid Horse rather than detteiu.
Also, I always thought the sound was more like "bweem-boo" or something like that.

Oh hell yeah, keep it as Stupid Horse. Same reasoning on keeping the other thing as Dodge the Beefsteak.
It's funnier.

"oh no my best friend was replaced by a evil demon shadow monster"
"argh i am the evil shadow monster demon shadow"
Vip is pronounced "Beep"

I agree with this.peteyboo wrote:I would say to keep it as Stupid Horse with an explanation in a text box. raocow is a huge reason any part of the English-speaking world even knows about the VIPs and it's a lot easier for us English-speaking people to say Stupid Horse rather than detteiu.
Japanese onomatopoeia tend to differ pretty wildly from how westerners perceive them, for whatever reason. For instance, the sound dogs make when they bark is written down as "wan wan" in Japanese, as opposed to "ruff ruff" or "arf".Also, I always thought the sound was more like "bweem-boo" or something like that.
Re: VIP Translation Community Questionairre - Stupid Horse?
Never understood how those Japanese hear "detteiu", to me any onomatopeia for this sound would require two syllables and not three!
"stupid horse" is a good translation as far as people/level names talking about Yoshi, but when Yoshi actually says "detteiu" it sounds really strange (for me) to have Yoshi insult himself by saying anything involving stupid horses. And I don't have a good idea to compensate for that...

Re: VIP Translation Community Questionairre - Stupid Horse?
In VIP5, I translated the nickname as "horse" and the sound as "Yo-shi!", so yeah.
Re: VIP Translation Community Questionairre - Stupid Horse?
Judging from the explanation, these seem to be fairly analogous memes, so I think "stupid horse" would be a fitting translation...
Even among related languages, onomatopoieia tend to differ a lot - in German, "Wau" (pronounced kinda like the English "Vow") is the most common onomatopoieia for a dog's bark, along with "Wuff" (quite similar to "Woof).AlchemistHohenheim wrote:Japanese onomatopoeia tend to differ pretty wildly from how westerners perceive them, for whatever reason. Re: VIP Translation Community Questionairre - Missing Boxes?
I would personally see no reason not to include the message boxes, as long as they're not in the way or anything.
I'd also vote for "stupid horse", but I think that's already been definitively decided.

I don't see the importance of translating messages not in the game. I think the best use of extra message boxes is to allow more room for the message already in the game.

It kind of bothered me when I had to open Lunar Magic to find out what the text box said. Please include in level just to make things easier!
Re: VIP Translation Community Questionairre - Missing Boxes?
Add the message boxes! I don't see how it could do anything bad.
Re: VIP Translation Community Questionairre - Missing Boxes?
To me, your explanations of memes and translation choices make the game feel like it was an "annotated version" already, so I think you might as well add the text boxes. In my opinion, such background information nearly always adds to the enjoyment...
