I'd honestly be down for real life core SMB2U (I don't think ascetic is possible) and normal SMB2J, with a save (floppy disk image?) for Worlds A-D if FDS is considered, which I'd suggest, with a savestate at each world because. I don't like SMAS' physics? And FDS has cuter graphics.

Here's the 1up trick, def recommend. Essential to beating the game if you're not a mad man, which I am not despite being into VIP and all.
Roll over point is at 128 lives (get 128 lives and you die, 127 and you're safe) for NES SMB1 so it should be the same for SMB2 FDS.

ok serious question that i can't remember the answer to if i've asked it before: did carol say that it's just going to take forever, or is it actually cancelled-cancelled? it seems like it petered out after world 1 got remade? i think the fact that remade lemmy (aka the world 1 boss) is up there with the dragon emperor (aka one of the last bosses in the pre-remake) in prestidigitation and way higher in fun kind of says a lot about how much effort it would take really and i'm guessing that that's just not sustainable?

This isn't sounding hopeful. Brutal Mario was my first exposure to SMW hacking and I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like it outside of cancelled stuff like Mario Fantasy, and things with uncertain futures like Extra Mario World and Seamar(?) Mario World.

It's one of the few SMW hacks I've ever seen where it felt like just anything could happen. Call it Russian Roulette. Call it bad balancing. Call it un-Mario-game-like. But the majority of SMWCentral content does not give me the chills, rush of adrenaline, and sense of magic that I got watching "Brutal Mario Demo 7 All Bosses" 12 years ago.

I really want that feeling back. I want my childhood hopes to be vindicated.

But from what I'm hearing, it sounds like Carol considers himself to have "grown up" from that hobby, and perhaps it's time I blew away that child-shaped flame inside of me alongside him.

I actually haven't at all. I was saving the experience until it was complete. I actually do this for most fan game/hack demos unless specifically asked to test them. (I know I said I spoiled myself on the contents of Brutal Mario Demo 7 but I was a dumb tween at the time ok)
