Hey raocow, who wrote "Fruit Machine?"
I found one from 2007, but not 1997.

Fruit Machine is the proper name for any low-stakes slot machine in the UK.

slot machines are so weird to us. i think it's that we like the Idea of a slot machine more than we do, like slot machines. smth about matching symbols is really fun! but Also every slot machine ever is rigged to Hell and back! but also i really think they're so pretty and make good noises! but also those designs can be used nefariously to distract you! but there's so many strange designs that make every machine interesting! but they hardly ever vary in a way that matters much because it's ultimately all down to luck or it being the time it isn't rigged against you 99.99% of the time! ...man. slot machines Complicated. i kinda wish there was a slot thing that was like, maybe not an actual Machine but like a video game where the slot machine is "rigged" but you have active clues as to HOW it's rigged, and it's basically a puzzle game to get it to pay out. that would be a fun puzzle game i think. this isn't about a hypothetical slot machine it's about an emulation of an actual machine!

&: raocow being absolutely flustered at the machine is a total mood. Sometimes Video Games will be like this and ESPECIALLY slot machines more convoluted than "it's the wheels and the buttons/lever" will do this to you. At one point there, that HI-LO thing was spinning and it just played... The Most Ethereal Noises We've Ever Heard From A Slot Machine. Before it cuts itself off with the second half of the Sonic the Hedgehog 1 Game Over. I kinda wish we had the foresight to get the timestamp for that so we could ask someone more knowledgeable than us to get the sound rip of that.

there should be more slot machines that make non-slot machine noises actually maybe

Some people, but not I. So, I went ahead and got him his shoes back. You don't have to worry. Rao saw everything the game has to offer. Level 3 is the last level, and if you speed past that sneaky spike ball, there's no other surprise obstacles.

Then I did it a second time while screenrecording because I found the ending kinda hilarious. It's just the same game over screen with the shoes on the sand, when suddenly sonic falls from the sky right into them.

Well, the age-old question is answered: Sonic doesn't have feet. Or if he does, his shoes are his feet and he unscrews them off his legs every night when he goes to bed.

Today, cow learns what a soft key is. Or perhaps re-learns? I miss the dumbphone era more with each passing day.

This week's videos are brought to you by Roland™ Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth™! now line up to get patch №61 Brass Section injected into your veins

I wonder if there's any way to better emulate how the game would have sounded on a phone, maybe with a soundfont through VirtualMidiSynth. Does... Does anyone remember how dumbphones sounded? They weren't just square waves, right?

I like that they immediately reused that tired but picking up phone face without actually picking up a phone for when Sonic saw Eggman. Other than that, not much to say here other than the jump actually jumped.

i think it was around the mid '00s, maybe even earlier, you started getting models with low-quality (not full-on "sever-your-leg-please" bad, but not iPod quality) sound files and so forth, and it did get a little better by the mid-'10s. I think by the time I graduated from college there were dumbphones you could set up with bespoke ringtones--not that I ever tried; I'd have to be talked out of making Wesley Willis my ringtone.
could you imagine, during a job interview or a funeral or a concert or what have you, the damn thing goes off and everyone in the room hears "CHRONIC SCHIZOPHRENIA! CHRONIC SCHIZOPHRENIA!" in no recognizable key?

Man alive, how could I forget the era of RINGTONES! COME AND GETCHER RINGTONES! SIGN UP FOR OUR SPAM MAIL VIRUS THING NOW AND GET 15 FREE RINGTONES!!!?

So the game probably was properly sampled instead of just being bleepbloops, but it was based on whatever the phone had on-board for midi to keep the game files small. Or perhaps there were included sound files but they were somehow not preserved. This makes me wonder about slapping together a soundfont made from the same source as the music of Sonic Advance (to go along with the sprites) with GBA-like quality, maybe with some kind of additional compression filter slapped on for maximum "this is coming from the four tiny holes at the top of the phone" vibes...

... but alas, it's just not worth the time. I'd rather just continue making a Sonic Advance sound enhancement hack at a glacial pace than do this!

EDIT (content of next post after watching tonight's video, but it would be a double post): this is some bizarre dissonance between the 2D Sonic ethos of "chaos emeralds are optional collectables for a better ending" and the 3D one of "chaos emeralds are a mandatory part of the plot".
