Fun Sonic Facts!

Sonic and the Secret Rings released to fairly positive scores from critics, who praised the game for its graphics, varied challenges, as well as resolving many issues that were present in previous 3D Sonic games, to the point that it was the most well-received instalment in the series since Sonic Heroes. While the game was criticized for its confusing controls, unappealing storytelling, and the repetitiveness of the mission based structure, it was generally seen as an overall improvement compared to the next-gen Sonic the Hedgehog. The game's multiplayer mode was also criticized for being too similar to Mario Party.

Most importantly for SEGA, It was also a commercial success by all metrics, leading to the commissioning of a sequel.

Fun trivia: This is one of the only Sonic games where Shadow shows up but Rouge does not.

I like the idea that Secret Rings got decent reviews on the grounds that it's NOT '06.

yeah it controls like complete ass and the story and structure are a complete trashfire but on the upside: there's lots of different idiotic things that don't work to do and also it looks okay while this garbage happens around you. 8/10

you can talk shit about the game all you want at this point, but the story isn't that bad

corny, yes, cliche, probably, but it's not some sin against storytelling

that would be 06 :monstrosity:

Yeah seriously, nothing up to this point is on the same level as what they did to Blaze to put Silver over in '06.
And that was hardly the stupidest thing.

Every time raocow talks about a sound effect being disgusting, it's seemingly because of the same sound playing multiple times at the same time. This is a case of devs not paying attention more than anything; they should've added a special case to only play the sound once instead of four things all playing the same sound, or have a special extra sound effect for "four swords stabbing skeletons at the same time, as opposed to just one in isolation", or even a simple "if sound is already playing, play at lowered volume, else play at normal volume" check somewhere.

Yes, I am aware this is a rushed Sonic game and there are titanically bigger fish to fry.

At this point I'm starting to wonder which game was tacked onto which.
Was Party Mode one last attempt at adding replay value, or was the game proper an addendum to a project they had no hopes of shipping as it was?

They probably made models + assets, gave them to the different developer who made the party mode and told them to go hog wild - probably at one point they said "hey uh how's it going the main game is almost finished, so you gotta wrap up as well" but from how it looks, the other team just nodded and said "sure". Party mode looks competent.

there's actually a lot more wrong and worse about 06 outside of just blaze being k worded or even sonic stans and normies' old faithful, The Kiss (which you didn't mention but i thought i might as well)

it's such a disaster of a story that there were huge crimes towards storytelling going on in the entire fucking game that when i was watching 06 as someone who commonly engorges himself in shitty jrpg plots i was like confused and horrified

shout out to shadow just giving the dildo his boyfriend's trapped in, that he's meant to retrieve and deliver it to the united nations, to the 8 year old princess whose dad just died after he sealed an eldritch fire demon within her because plot. oh and only in one cutscene do they leave the blue emerald with her because... time loops i guess. it's not like they would need it to travel through time through chaos control or whatever

On another note, the playlist is definitely serving its purpose. Some pretty good finds I'd have never heard about:

That's Jim O'Rourke on guitar, and hearing him on this, I can't believe I overlooked him for so long. Here, he and Tony Conrad do justice to a John Fahey classic from 1975.

The Bad Plus are a jazz trio who manage to sound modern without such obvious points of reference as Derek Bailey or John Zorn. Also worth mention is their imaginative reworking of Tears For Fears' "Everybody Wants To Rule The World," off the same album.
