Games Beaten in 2022

Post by Bean »

Time to step up once again after letting others handle previous years and put down this annual post. 2022 is going to be a good year for games, so let's see how many we can beat! It doesn't matter if they're new, old, first times, or replays. This list can be whatever you want as long as you get through it. Just to make things easier to look back on, it'd be nice if you put down...
  • The game's name
  • The platform it was played on
  • And the date you beat it
Other than that, your list is your list and it'll be interesting to compare them at the end of the year. And with that, let the game playings begin again!

Past Years: 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021

Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles (PSP; Completed 1-3-22) [First Time]
Notes: Just the Rondo remake, not SotN or the original Rondo. Took a bit to get used to the controls, but it's definitely a fun game, a solid remake, and probably the best old-school-style Castlevania. I played through it primarily as Maria, simply since she's easier to use, but I might try again as Richter someday.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PSP; Completed 1-14-22) [Replay]
Notes: This is the version unlockable via Dracula X Chronicles, which I wanted to play to see how different it was from the PSX original. The answer? Not much. New voice acting and dialogue, a new ending song replacing I Am the Wind, the two previously Japan-only Familiars restored, a handful of typos and misspellings fixed, and a Rondo of Blood-style child Maria as a playable character... but otherwise, it's the same as the original. Even some of the glitches still work! 200.6% completion (or rather, 200.9%, since I glitched into the room below the gate), naturally.

Shining Force 3 (Saturn) [First Time]
-Scenario 1 (Completed 2-4-22)
-Scenario 2 (Completed 2-24-22)
-Scenario 3 (Completed 3-13-22)
Notes: Man. *Man*. This game was incredible. Right up there with Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre for the best strategy RPGs I've ever played... it took me nigh on two months to complete this massive, underrated gem, and I loved it *all*. It's just a *damn* shame only the first scenario saw an English release, and Sega/Camelot seem to have no interest in bringing it to modern hardware. Still, the fan translation was top notch, and worked perfectly. Moreover, any "flaws" with the game, outside of a few really obnoxious battles in scenario 2, would just be pedantic nitpicking. If you like strategy RPGs, you *owe* it to yourself to play this game! The *whole* game! As an aside, this was the first Saturn game I ever played. Woo!

LEGO Lord of the Rings (PC; Completed 3-29-22) [First Time]
Notes: A fun, rompy collectathon, a nice palette cleanser after the previous game. Wasn't very difficult, which was to be expected, but I still had a good time with it. I only managed 99.2% completion, however, due to a glitch keeping me from getting one last item, which in turn would unlock a few other things. Sadness.

Dragon Quest 5 (DS; Completed 4-12-22) [Replay]
Notes: Replay using a hack that modifies various things, most notably making monsters significantly easier to recruit. It did have the side effect of making an already not terribly difficult game even easier... but it was still fun, and very nice not having to deal with 1/64 or even 1/256 recruitment rates. I also, after much effort, cleared that blasted postgame T'n'T board. Hooray!

Ys Origin (PC; Completed 4-29-22) [First Time]
Notes: Only finished the Yunica path; I'll do the other two in the future. A solid action RPG, though it doesn't exactly stand out in any significant ways, and it's highly linear and formulaic. It's also really weird playing an Ys game and *not* controlling Adol. Contrary to most Ys games, though, the bosses were actually quite a lot of fun.

CrossCode (PC; Completed 5-16-22) [Replay]
Notes: Picked up a (fairly early on) New Game+ save I'd sort of let sit there for a while, and also completed the DLC and other new content. My overall opinion of the game has improved significantly since my initial playthrough; there's a *lot* of depth here, ad the game does a good job of providing you with options for a number of completely viable character builds. The puzzles and boss fights are also, for the most part, highlights... but despite all the positives, it still does have its flaws. Namely, some of the (fortunately optional) sidequests are absolutely horrible... and the DLC *expands* on most of the worst of them, for some god-forsaken reason. Also, I maintain that enemy attacks are simply too fast, numerous, and accurate (those physics-defying mid-air bends in enemy jumps or projectiles, hooray!) to make dodging attacks -- seemingly the way the game *wants* to be played -- viable for anyone except those with very good twitch reflexes... Nevertheless, a few quibbles (that can be overcome) do not mar what is otherwise a fantastic game that any action RPG fan should experience.
Ayjo and Meya are watching you. Be on your best behavior.

- 08/02: Disco Elysium (Very good game, extremely well written, a tad buggy, ends a bit abruptly, but still a wonderful experience.)
- 25/02: Child of Light (Fun combat that gets a tad repetitive later on, story is so-so, also ends abruptly, but super fun nonetheless.)
- 28/03: Sonic Forces (It's okay. Avatar customization is neat, gameplay is fun at times and annoying at others. Story's a 10/10, though.)
- 10/04: The Gray Garden (It's a Mogeko game, but probably the best one??? Eh... Next.)
- 04/05: UNSIGHTED (Too much Zelda, 7/10. Grandma survived, though! :D)
- 05/05: Dungeon Fighter Online (Ozma saga) (Does clearing the single player campaign of an MMO count? I guess it does now!)

Sonic Mania, Nintendo Switch - Beaten 2022-01-01. Once again, I got the itch to play sanic over NYE. I've developed my own tradition <3
Shin Megami Tensei IV, Nintendo 3DS - Neutral Ending 2022-02-06, four stars 2022-04-19. The Tokyo Ending is basically the only one I can stomach, which is a shame because mechanically this is a damn fine game and the Tokyo Ending is a pain in the ass to reach.
Dune 2: The Building of a Dynasty, Microsoft DOS - Atreides Campaign cleared 2022-03-22. If not for the fact that I need to clear Mission 9 to reach the end credits, I would have been finished a week ago. And 'Thopters continue to be 100% not worth the spice investment thanks to Rocket Turrets.
Heirs to Skull Crag, Forgotten Realms Unlimited Adventures - Final battle beaten 2022-03-27. I mean really all I did in that final battle was have my Magic-User blow herself up twice. And it's not like death is permanent in D&D or anything (except it totally was in the end because of the -1 CON cost of raising)
UNDERTALE, Nintendo Switch - True Pacifist 2022-04-20. I missed Vegetoid and... something in Hotland? for full yellow credits, but m'eh. I also missed sparing all of the bonus bosses but I wasn't going out of my way to do that.
deltarune chapters 1+2, Nintendo Switch - 2022-04-21 (both chapters) - so I like Chapter 1 less than undertale but chapter 2 more than undertale so yeah. also holy shit that ending.
Pokemon Red litelocke, Nintendo 3DS VC - Champion Challenged 2022-05-13. Final team was Aerodactyl 'Wingman', Gengar 'Big Boo', Raichu 'Himeko', Snorlax 'Really Really Big Man', Blastoise 'Takagi', and Vileplume 'Hannah'.
Shantae, Nintendo Switch - Risky ruined 2022-05-20. Gecko Racing continues to be my best source of gems (you have absolute control over when the AI's die stops rolling, so with a little practice you can make them always roll 1's)
Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3, Nintendo 3DS VC - Birdhouse 2022-06-03. Final score was 525 which isn't great but it's still below the Birdhouse threshold; I can definitely do better by jumping in after Minotaur to void the coin shower and by bringing Jet into the Zenisukii fight.
Shantae and the Pirate's Curse, Nintendo 3DS - Regular Game 2022-06-04. Missed three heart squids (1 on Tan Line, 2 on Permafrost), got all the Dark Magic. Monster Milk makes mighty men mincemeat. Pirate Mode beaten 2022-06-06 with a time of 2:32:xx (went for all squids+cacklebats; I think next time I'll just go for all cacklebats since 100% includes unique shop purchases and I really don't want to run the Tan Line Temple loop a hundred times just for that)
Bravely Default, Nintendo 3DS - Ouroborous Obliterated 2022-06-14. The true final boss is susceptible to AI exploitation that the false final boss (and penultimate boss on the true route) is not; they both get caught in the same support/strike loop, but True Final Boss ultimately can't outpace double curagas with it while False Final Boss will OHKO you for your troubles (since False Final Boss's support spell has Dispel built into it, which True Final Boss's support spell just self-buffs).

Okay, time to list like 3 things for the whole year.
  • Mario Bros 3 (NES Classic) - Jan 13: Not much explanation needed. Outside of Gradius and GnG, this was the last NES Classic game with an ending that I hadn't beat (to my knowledge). I've beaten the Marios before, but my goal was to get a snapshot of each ending.
  • Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction (PS3) - Jan 22: Pretty fun game. I didn't get a PS3 until a couple weeks ago, but I loved the PS2 games in the series. The story is alright, definitely sets up for sequels unlike the PS2 games. The weapons are pretty fun and I like the raritanium upgrade system. I won't really be able to give a final opinion on the weapons until after challenge mode - first playthrough of any RnC with upgrades is very much "this one is upgraded, time to never use it again until they all are". I got all gold bolts and the RYNO first time through, but not all skill points.
  • RaCF:ToD (PS3 100%) - Feb 14: Good and fun game for the most part. All the weapons are fun except the Predator Launchers. They are too weak and slow, and the knock back doesn't make up for it. Speaking of slow... Everybody Dance Now. I dedicated a second challenge mode run just for this skill point. Every encounter was exactly the same: throw Groovitron, wait for it to end (there is no consensus whether the start, end, or entire dance counts), then RYNO. Also, there is no in game tracker and you have to do it in one run, so you better hope you didn't miss any NPC. Just a simple "(planet) is grooving" message would work.
  • RaCF: Quest for Booty (PS3) - Feb 18: a nice, fun, short, pirate romp. I'm glad it comes bundled with Into the Nexus. I played on hard and upgraded every weapon to V5, and it took about 3 hours. My thoughts on the weapons are the same as ToD: all good except Predator Launchers.
  • RaCF: A Crack in Time (PS3) - Mar 18: I liked ToD, I like aCiT much more. I got all the gold bolts and Zoni on my normal mode playthrough (hard difficulty), and am currently making my way through challenge mode. The extra Clank puzzles are wonderful, I want more of those. I'm not a big fan of the RYNO5 - it is definitely much more suited for crowds than individual enemies. Weapons are good and fun, except the 6-axis gun because I couldn't get it to go backwards (I could with the ToD tornadoes easily). I also miss the raritanium upgrades, and the constructo weapons could have been Deadlocked/Gladiator levels of fleshed out. Hoverboots are fun, but I wish they could be double-tap-R2 activated so that I could do it with my right hand easily. I know this seems like a lot of complaints, but everything else is excellent.
  • RaCF:aCiT (PS3 100%) - Mar 30: Still excellent. It turns out that I had done most of the non-"go out of your way to do specific thing" skill points in my first playthrough. For example, some of the ones I didn't get were "Terachnoid Rave", "Bug Bait", and "Pest Control". I did bolt grinding in the arena (x20 to elite hydra tank nets 63xxx bolts per round) and level grinding in Gimlick Valley (clear out first area, die, repeat; takes under 2 hours if you had been working on levels throughout the game). Now for the two "switch up the formula games"...
  • RaC: All 4 One (PS3) - Apr 14: Big oof. At times I didn't mind the super on-rails nature of the game, but there were multiple instances where I saw something, said "I'll get it after the fight", and the camera turned making it impossible for no reason. Also, the AI partner is... not great. A few noteworthy moments: jumping off the edge for no reason; multiple times it tried to do my part of the coop "puzzle" and refusing to do the easy part; and finally, standing still using the vac-u-suck in the middle of 3 enemies instead of coming to pick me up. I'm not going back to "100%" this, that would require beating it 4 times, buying another controller, and also doing a bunch of online coop for a dead 10+ year old game. On the plus side, the final boss was pretty neat, and the "shoot together" mechanic is interesting.
  • Ratchet and Clank: Full Frontal Assault/Q-Force (PS3) - Apr 27: Surprisingly good? I enjoyed myself a lot more than I thought I would, so much so that I'm going to give this a proper 100% minus online treatment. Weapons were good, stages were good, gameplay is fun. It's not "proper" RaC, but whatever.
  • RaC: FFA (PS3) - May 11: Well, I'm not going to full 100%. I did all the skill points except "travel this far", "break all crates" (except the first planet), "buy a bunch of barriers", and the co-op/online ones. Getting the speedrun points were fun, and the skill based ones weren't too much trouble. Onto Nexus.
  • Ratchet and Clank: Into the Nexus (PS3) - May 19: Pretty good game. A nice return to "normal" RaC gameplay. Most things are fun, my least favorite thing is the Clank gameplay. It's a sort of VVVVVV thing - you can move and also control the 4 directions of gravity. I have yet to get "good" at it yet, but that's because I don't have a lot of experience with two-handed control. I got the RYNO and all the gold bolts on the first playthrough, I'll get the rest of the skill points and trophies in challenge mode. I like that the some of the skill points and trophies are Sony/ESRB rejected names of RaC games - ClockBlockers (aCiT), Into the Nether Region (Nexus). It's too bad Multiple Organisms/Four Play (A4O) didn't make it in.
  • RaC:ItN (PS3 100%) - June 5: Still a good game. I finished up the 100% on challenge mode run 3, only needing the "break all glass" skill point and "scare all enemies" trophy on that run. I've changed my mind on the Clank gameplay - it's odd at first, but it only took a couple tries for each of the skill points (time trial, limited moves, and no damage). I was originally trying to solve all my problems by changing gravity, but normal movement is better.
