MEDALS

When a contest is stacked with quality stuff, there's the inevitability of the medal selection also being massive. This contest has about as many medals as all previous medal-granting contests combined! We hope you enjoy them. It's not QUITE alphabetical order this time, but it's presented in the same order as the spreadsheet and presentations, wahoo!

Welcome to the 2021 Chocolate Contest! The chocolate contest is our annual no-holds-barred level design free-for-all, in which you make the best level you can with all the tools the engine has at its disposal. Because as we all know: Chocolate is the opposite of vanilla.

____________________________________________________________________________________

THE RULES
- You may participate alone or in a team of 2 people.
- Every participant may only submit one level in total.
- Levels must be compatible with SMBX2 Beta 4 Patch 4 Hotfix.
- Levels may have up to 2 exits, and must feature at least 1.
- To prevent issues with their systems affecting contest entries, none of the SMBX2-exclusive player characters may be used.

- A level may be disqualified if two or more judges are unable to play it. If one judge is unable to play it, that judge will merely grant a score of 0.
- A level may be disqualified if the judges agree that it was designed in bad faith.
- A level may be disqualified if it has previously been released, or is stolen.
- A level may be disqualified if the content of the level violates the forum rules.
- A level may be disqualified if (any of) the creator(s) become(s) banned after submission.

____________________________________________________________________________________

OF NOTE
- The results and an episode including all submissions will be released simultaneously once judging concludes. Should the episode take an unexpectedly long amount of time, the results will release first.
- We encourage you to post your level on the smbx forums contest subforum for pre-submission testing, or ask friends to test the level
- Submissions are anonymous. The judges will avoid looking at the threads in the aforementioned subforum, and the submissions thread
- While secret exits and non-basegame custom characters are allowed, be careful when using them, because their use is known to backfire if handled poorly
- Wrong start points, music paths and other oversights will not be corrected before sending levels to the judges. Test thoroughly!
- Judges may cheat if they aren't skilled enough to beat a difficult level, or if they feel like a level is deliberately wasting their time. An easy way to ensure a judge plays your level legitimately is to moderate yourself in terms of length and difficulty.

THE SCORING RUBRIC
In the spoiler below is an explanation of our scoring rubric for this contest. Should you have any questions, please ask them in this thread.

30 points for Pacing, in which the overall structure of the level is be evaluated.
25 points for Fun, in which a judge rates the judge's personal enjoyment of the level.
20 points for Presentation, in which flavour, flourishes, visuals and sound design will be evaluated.
15 points for Concept, in which the level's general idea will be evaluated.
10 points for Functionality, in which a level's technical stability will be evaluated.

The maximum attainable score is 100 points (30/25/20/15/10 per category).

____________________________________________________________________________________

THE JUDGES
5 judges will be judging the levels. Three of these have fought hard and overcome the trial of the judge auditions:
DisasterMaster, GenesisJames, Waddle
They will be joined by ShadowStarX and Enjl to round out the judge roster.

All judges will review levels without awareness of who made them.

____________________________________________________________________________________

THE DEVKIT
For this contest we have put together a small devkit with a few helpful features that let you do some fancy things with none-to-minimal coding.
You do not need to use the devkit, or download it. Your level will work the same regardless of whether or not you use it. However, you might find it useful in general.
Documentation is included, but for a brief run-down:
- textplus-based recreation of the basegame message box
- more UI elements, positions of UI elements as they will appear in the episode, as well as the option to reduce the ui to itembox only
- some stuff to ensure that the variables SaveData and GameData can be used as-is and only apply to your level
- visual fidelity settings
- extraNPCProperties.lua by MrDoubleA

DOWNLOAD THE DEVKIT
After downloading, place the contents in the same folder as your contest level's level file.

Sure! As long as you give credit to the author of the script, I don't think there'd be any author objecting to that idea, too. Could always ask for their permission if you wanna be extra safe.

Just a thought, but you should probably put SMBX in the title of the thread to avoid confusion with any potential SMWC Chocolate Level Design Contest

Re: SMBX Chocolate Contest 2021 - JUDGE AUDITIONS

Post by Emral »

JUDGE AUDITIONS
HOW DOES THIS WORK?
Similar to MAGLX3, anyone has a chance to join the judge roster through a public vote process. To apply, download the Audition Stage Set (6 levels) below and judge them in accordance with the judging rubric, using the most recent SMBX2 version. Then, send me a PM with your application. The reviews will be anonymously voted on shortly after the deadline on June 21st.

THE SCORING RUBRIC
In the spoiler below is a detailed explanation of our scoring rubric for this contest. Should you have any questions, please ask them in this thread.
30 points for Pacing
In this category, the overall structure of the level should be evaluated.
Questions you might ask yourself in this category include:
- Does the level properly prepare you for the things it asks you to do?
- Is the ending satisfying?
- Are there any boring filler-spots that make the level drag on?
- Are there individual screens and sections in the level that work extremely well/badly?
- Is the checkpointing well done?

25 points for Fun
In this category, the degree to which you enjoyed the level should be evaluated. This is a wildcard category, and will reflect the way in which people's experiences may differ in a level. It may vastly differ from the other categories scores, if for example you don't vibe well with an otherwise good level.
Questions you might ask yourself in this category include:
- Would I want to play this level again?
- Have I had a good time with this level?
- Is the level just not my cup of tea?

20 points for Presentation
In this category, the level's flavour, flourishes, visuals and sound design will be evaluated.
Questions you might ask yourself in this category include:
- Were there any elements that felt "off" about the presentation?
- Did the level go for a certain emotional response, and did it achieve it?
- Do the level's audiovisual elements contribute to the experience in a positive manner?
- Does the level have well-done flourishes?

15 points for Concept
In this category, the level's general idea will be evaluated.
Questions you might ask yourself in this category include:
- Was the level going for something ambitious or something fairly standard?
- Would I like to see more levels going for this kinda thing?
- How elaborate were the ideas put forth by the level?

10 points for Functionality
In this category, the level's structural integrity with regards to crashes, errors and lag will be evaluated. The functionality score should be 0 when a level is unplayable due to technical circumstances, and 10 if no technical issues were experienced.
Questions you might ask yourself in this category include:
- Did I experience lag?
- Were there any lua errors? (Warnings do not count)

The maximum attainable score is 100 points (30/25/20/15/10 per category).

Ooh, this should be fun! I've been meaning to contribute to more projects aside from A2XT, so I'd like to apply for a judge position! I've been working on the level reviews and should hopefully have them done and sent to you pretty soon, Enjl!

Oh boy! I am definitely down to participate after watching so much MAGLX3, but I don't think I should be a judge. Still, hype!

Re: SMBX Chocolate Contest 2021 - JUDGE VOTING

Post by Emral »

THE DEADLINE HAS ARRIVED. 7 DARING JUDGES HAVE GATHERED TO SHOW US THEIR MIGHT AND PROWESS.

WHAT'S NEXT?
For the next 4 days, until 6PM GMT on June 25th, you can use the form below to vote on the candidates you wish to see judging this contest.
Once the 4 days have passed, we will choose the top 3 that emerged from this free-for-all and fill out the roster with 2 people from the event management team, to round out the roster to a total of 5 judges (so we have plenty around in case something goes awry).

The judges have been made anonymous to level the playing field. Judge candidates, please don't reveal your identities.

Damn, controversy before we even begin huh? Glad it's been caught though.

I didn't enter, but I did play some of the levels. It's kinda hilarious seeing which ones did or didn't break for the judges because boy some of levels broke horribly for me and those functionality scores have some wild variance.

No theme! These smbx chocolate contests are more of a do-what-you want kinda thing, but personally I kinda consider this new rubric style to be the "theme" here (though it's a bit of a stretch). Once the contest begins next friday I will also link a level name generator for clicking through where people can get some inspiration from.
