Well it is a decent hack but sometime its just too repetitif there no level that actually pop in your face and your like oh yeah that level they all ressemble themselves and just monster along the way.

curious to see what this one has to offer. i've heard nothing but enthusiastic disinterest about it, but maybe it'll thwart all expectations. even if it won't, it may just be the perfect segway back to mario after dkl3.

I kinda appreciate the romps so far. Sure, the player probably won't die due to an actual level, but at least the levels feel like actual places in a way.

okay i am gonna be that bitch and look at the level design critically yet subjectively (so feel free to ignore this if u disagree)
all the stages played today have like two main themes, one relating to the level theming and the enemy introduced

hillside is water with koopas, colorful is detailed pixel art with nippers, fungal is mushroom ledges with volcano lotuses and tall tops is tree branches with rexes capped off with a boss battle

sadly it never does anything interesting with the enemy behavior or level theming, not even in a rompy sense, even if its something that's been done before because there are only so many things you can do with vanilla smbx

hillside has water sections and some koopas strewn about, colorful has a more open level design and nippers strewn about, fungal is etc etc

the boss battle in tall tops isn't even thematically fitting it's just "oh hey i added a boss battle about kicking shells at piranha plants at the end of a stage", i'd honestly place it on hillside to fit with the koopa theme or near the end of the world as a revisit to the shell manipulation of 1-2

the game also has a big problem with overexplaining like right in tall tops you get agent toad going "man i feel like the answer is right next to me" and then you enter a pipe and like The Game Already Makes Fun Of This with How Do I Mario Bros. and it's like????? have some faith on the player even if this is their first episode G*d. show don't tell

maybe i've been spoiled by jump team's productions and the less absurd parts of vip+aspe but vip also didn't bring its a-game to world 1 (they mostly organized levels by difficulty which meant a lot of the crappier ones got shafted into earlygame most of the time) and i'd point that out all the same. i'd say "maybe this is like vip and it gets more interesting with level design" but sancles and everyone else are like "oh this is boring" so i'm tempering my expectations

However. this does not seem like a bad game, just a very... average one. a fair 3 out of 5. it's playable, it gets the job done, but it's only that.

sancles told me that she thinks donkey kong land 3 is basically yoshis archipelago 2 so it might be better to turn the thinking off early at the risk of repeating the same points of criticism every time

Honestly I think the aesthetics fit together well and I like the music choices. As for the game, it serves the purpose of "have some time to chill and relax for a while" since it's not super intensive like the other two going on.

I mean I think you're gonna run out of things to comment on by episode 4 because this game gets very same-y very quickly.

Until you get to one of the admittedly few levels that are just god awful.

I'll be honest though, I like the episode cause for the most part it's got this "yeah we're just doing a thing" vibe where everything is kinda chill and nothing and it is nostalgic in a way

I'm sorry to AUS, I just like looking at Mario levels critically because I'm autistic and also I read the post as passive aggressive even if it wasn't intended that way

But I also had to stop myself from going on critically about Sonic as a franchise on the AtS thread because I've been a fan since I was 3 and I have developed Opinions on it

I'm excited to see where it goes from here. I've played a little bit of this in my free time (like 6 months ago) and made it into world 2 or 3, and it's pretty gnarly!

this might pass by a lot of non-smbx-savvy folk but mr. Agent Toad over here actually explains changes from basegame smbx mechanics, so technically he does serve a purpose!
