[RESULTS] Talkcordhaus Video Game Music (VGM) Guessing Contest XVII: And Knuckles

Post by SirChasm »

ANOTHER VERY GOOD LOGO

So before we get to the actual results, I'd like to thank a few people who made this competition possible.

First, a humongous thank you to Katazuki, who not only allowed me to host this edition of the contest in the first place, but was invaluable in terms of assisting with cross-social media communication and technological hiccups. (I'm curious how well you would have done if you hadn't offered to forfeit your shot at competing...)

Second, a humongous thank you to our very own raocow, who without any prompting or asking provided both a link and a vocal invitation to compete in the contest in a recent episode of All the Sonics. While I'm a touch disappointed that you didn't throw your hat in the ring yourself, it was still an incredibly kind gesture.

Lastly, thank you to our nine competitors, as well as those who just stopped by to listen to the clips without submitting answers of your own. Life is better with good music, and just as I enjoy finding new songs and soundtracks, I hope you found a potential new favorite among these fifty-nine songs (and the intruder).

Anyways, here we go...

The songs!
  1. HALFPIPE TOKYO - Acceleration [SEGA!]
    Identified by: kitikami (Solo!)

Boy, did I get some flack for this one. HALFPIPE TOKYO tends to be advertised as more of a ride or an "experience" than a traditional video game, but it's got a screen, it's got competition, and it had SEGA working on it. If you insist it still doesn't count, it also featured in one of the maimai games. So there.
  2. Guilty Gear XX #Reload (Korean Version) - Dead Silence
    Identified by: Nobody...

Obscure? Maybe, but considering it was one of the major selling points for the Switch version of XX, I thought it would be a little bit more in the public eye. (I also know that one song on the soundtrack is a personal favorite of raocow's, so I figured someone might have checked it out simply because they were curious.)
  3. Final Fantasy III - Elia, The Maiden of Water
    Identified by: El_Yosh, kitikami, NastCF
Half-identified by: Cyril, Matt is me

You can thank Theatrhythm Final Fantasy for my knowledge of this one. I find it odd that the remake of this game has a lot more YouTube hits than its Famicom counterpart... maybe it's just the ease of access?
  4. Dai Gyakuten Saiban: Naruhodō Ryūnosuke no Bōken/The Great Ace Attorney: The Adventure of Ryūnosuke Naruhodō - Asougi Kazuma ~ Samurai with a Mission
    Identified by: Cyril, kitikami, Validon98

My sister managed to pick up both of the DGS titles on her latest trip to Japan (before the outbreak of the virus occurred, just to clarify!), and we thoroughly enjoyed our playthrough of the Scarlet Study translation. Doesn't hurt that she's also a huge Sherlock Holmes fan!
  5. Xenoblade Chronicles X - NLA (Night)
    Identified by: El_Yosh (Solo!)

There's good music, there's bad music, and there's music that manages to be both. You can guess where this falls.
  6. Astral Chain - Task Force Neuron
    Identified by: Rwars (Solo!)

I'm a little surprised this one was a solo. From my understanding, Astral Chain did fairly well in terms of sales, and it's not like people don't like Platinum titles around these parts, from what I've seen. That's what I get for assuming, I suppose.
  7. Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance - “Metal Gear Solid” Main Theme (Skateboarding Remix)
    Identified by: El_Yosh (Solo!)
    Half-identified by: Reecer7

There's something to be said about a game where this is even weirder than someone saying "I need scissors! 61!"
  8. Mega Man 11 - Fuse Man (Instrumental Version)
    Identified by: Nobody...

Originally a pre-order bonus, these alternate takes on the level themes were an interesting alternative to the more electronic style used in the main game. Nothing's better than some TLC in your DLC, see?
  9. Hyrule Warriors Legends - Linkle's Theme
Identified by: kitikami, NastCF, Validon98 (well, sorta)
Half-identified by: Cyril, El_Yosh, Matt is me, Reecer7

Linkle's one of those characters where you think the idea is kinda bizarre, but then you start playing as her and you're destroying everything with big ol' bombs and mowing down Miniblins with your twin crossbows and then everything turns out alright.
  10. Sonic Pinball Party - We Are Burning Rangers [SEGA!]
    Identified by: Bee Kirby, NastCF
    Half-identified by: Cyril, El_Yosh

    Sonic Spinball never ends.
  11. Mickey's Speedway USA - Malibu
    Identified by: Nobody...

You'll find that I inadvertently added a second theme to this contest, as a lot of these titles are racing games. Call it coincidence, call it my not noticing the pattern, or do as I do and call it recognition of some damn good tunes.
  12. Rhythm Thief and the Emperor's Treasure - Faux Phantom R Again? [SEGA!]
    Identified by: kitikami (Solo!

This is definitely a rude one, but no half-credit was given to those who guessed Space Channel 5: Part 2. For one thing, you should know better than to think that it's a song that says the name of the game in the title! (And yes, I double checked its SC5 counterpart, and the clip heard in this song is a unique one.)
  13. 7th Dragon - Labyrinth ~ Jungle Navigation [SEGA!]
    Identified by: Nobody...

Here's a fun fact for you: Hatsune Miku did a cover of this song for a later game in the series! Too bad we never got this original version overseas.
  14. Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes - Lo-Fi Civilization
    Identified by: Nobody...

I probably could have gone with a more recognizable song than this one, but considering that it's a fan-favorite, you could call it a litmus test to see who else played this game! Granted, it was a failed litmus test...
  15. Rhythm Heaven Fever - Manzai Birds
    Identified by: Bee Kirby, NastCF

I understand why it wasn't localized, but that doesn't mean that I can't still be incredibly upset that it had to be removed.
  16. Pilotwings 64 - Birdman
    Identified by: Nobody...

Two bird songs in a row! This wasn't done on purpose, either; I put the master list of songs into a randomizer before beginning the contest proper, so this was just the luck of the draw.
  17. TEKKEN 7 - Moonsiders 2nd
    Identified by: Nobody...

Another one that I'm surprised nobody answered, especially after the fighting game-focused contest last time. I could've sworn people would remember this, at the very least, as the song Tasty Steve insists on singing along to.
  18. Wave Race: Blue Storm - La Razza Canal (Light Showers)
    Identified by: Nobody...

This game hosts one of my favorite unlockables, being an announcer that wants to be literally anywhere else than having to commentate over your endeavors. It also has a dolphin in it. Get it?
  19. Sam and Max Beyond Time and Space/Sam and Max: Season Two - El Molcajete de Almas
    Identified by: kitikami (Solo!)

It roughly translates to "the mortar and pestle of souls", for those curious.
  20. Cro-Mag Rally - Desert
    Identified by: Nobody...

When I was a kid, the crappy iMac my parents bought came with three games: Bugdom, Nanosaur, and this one. I was terrible at all of them, so only this song (the first track in the game) stuck in my memory.
  21. Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair - Urban Uprise
    Identified by: Cyril (Solo!)

I like to refer to this game as "the one where everyone assumes David Wise did the level music".
  22. Shenmue - Slot House [SEGA!]
    Identified by: Nobody...

While not the biggest earworm in the game (come to Bob's Pizza~), it's definitely a contender. You think there are any sailors around the casino?
  23. Racing Lagoon - Bay Lagoon Racing
    Identified by: Nobody...

Yeah, this one was a bit of a deep cut. It seems like a fascinating title, but there isn't even a fan-made English patch for it. We can assume it'll never make its way outside of Japan, but it's nice to dream.
  24. The Intruder! Ogres - Grant Kirkhope
    Identified by: NastCF (Solo!)

I told you the intruder was never featured in a released video game, but I didn't say anything about it being originally composed for one. Project Dream may have shapeshifted a lot in the process of its creation, but it lives on in infamy through beta tracks like these, as well as the seasick ramblings of one Captain Blackeye.
  25. Octopath Traveler - Decisive Battle I
    Identified by: El_Yosh, NastCF, Validon98

I'm not one for turn-based RPGs, but I am one for good music. Thus.
  26. DEAD HEAT RIDERS - SURROUNDIN' U
    Identified by: Nobody...

Considering Hideki Naganuma uploaded this to his channel about a week and a half before the contest began, I was confident that it would be one of the most correctly answered songs. Lesson learned: never be confident.
  27. Conker's Pocket Tales - Minigame
    Identified by: Nobody...

This is an odd one. This song was originally composed for Twelve Tales: Conker 64, was released in Pocket Tales, and was used in its original form with a different context in Bad Fur Day. Of course, considering Twelve Tales also gave us what would later be the main theme of Jet Force Gemini, it's been proven that there's no shame in recycling.
  28. Pokémon Black 2/White 2 - Battle! (Colress)
    Identified by: Nobody...
    Half-identified by: El_Yosh (Solo!)

Hot take: Colress is a better character for "rival of the player who sides with the villainous team to best determine how Pokémon should be treated" than N was. And his music's better, too!
  29. The 25th Ward: The Silver Case - Sandalwood
    Identified by: Nobody...

Hey, remember that litmus test I mentioned earlier?
  30. Napple Tale: Arsia in Daydream - Round Sheep [SEGA!]
    Identified by: Nobody...

Who's that doing composition work? Why, it's Yoko Kanno of Cowboy Bebop fame!
  31. Diddy Kong Racing DS - Create-a-Track (Dino Domain)
    Identified by: Nobody...

I'm of two minds when it comes to Diddy Kong Racing DS. On the one hand, the soundtrack is weaker than its Nintendo 64 counterpart in terms of instrumentation, and the touch screen gimmicks are poorly implemented. On the other, it doesn't have an exploit where tapping the gas makes you go faster than just holding down the button. It's never fun when there's no real "definitive" version of a game like this.
  32. To the Moon - Having Lived
    Identified by: Cyril (Solo!)

As someone on the autism spectrum, it was a breath of fresh air to play a game where it's portrayed not as a superpower or a debilitating disorder, but just something that has to be overcome one way or another.
  33. Skittles/Candy Crisis - Level 2
    Identified by: Nobody...

I'm a little ashamed to say this was my introduction to Puyo Puyo, but this game was something of a phenomenon back when I was young and (more) easily impressed. We never made it past the third stage, though. (There's also a bit of confusion as to whether or not this song was taken from another source, so I would have offered a few points if someone declared this to be the intruder.)
  34. VA-11 HALL-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action - Neo Avatar
    Identified by: El_Yosh (Solo!)

My frothing demand for N1RV Ann-A increases.
  35. Pepsiman - PEPSI MAN (Original Mix)
    Identified by: Reecer7 (Solo!)

To those of you couldn't recognize this without people shouting the name of the song: you must be PEPSI SHAAAAAAAAAAMS!
  36. Let's Tap - Chameleon [SEGA!]
    Identified by: Nobody...

Funnily enough, someone guessed that this was the Sting Chameleon theme from Mega Man X. Odd that an answer can be both very close, yet completely off the mark.
  37. Super Monkey Ball 2 - World 7 ~ Bubbly Washing Machine [SEGA!]
    Identified by: Bee Kirby (Solo!)

I've never felt confident when playing 8 Rings. I know I can pass it, but I'm always scared that I won't have enough momentum.
  38. Persona 5 - Alleycat [SEGA!]
Identified by: Cyril, kitikami, NastCF, Rwars

For those wondering why this qualifies as a SEGA song: any game released by Atlus after they were purchased is fair game, but nothing before that.
  39. Namco X Capcom - Trembling City of Aris
Identified by: Matt is me (Solo!)

I have beaten Namco X Capcom more than once. It takes roughly 75 hours to beat Namco X Capcom. Mine is not a life well spent.
  40. Wario Land 4 - The Moon's Lamppost
    Identified by: Bee Kirby (Solo!)

Why would they take the music for one of the easiest levels of the game, reverse it, and make it a collectible in a completely unrelated level? Why not?
  41. The World Ends with You - SHIBUYA
Identified by: Cyril, Matt is me

A few years ago, I would have been begging for those "NEW 7 DAYS" that have been teased for oh so long, but without the dual screen system, it just doesn't feel the same. (And no, this isn't from Jet Set Radio.)
  42. Radio Hammer - Brass Bay
    Identified by: Nobody...

Oh, now you're telling me nobody's played Radio Hammer either? You get to whack zombies with a guitar! I don't see any other game where you can whack zombies with a guitar! (I am fully confident that there is at least one other game where you can whack zombies with a guitar.)
  43. Anarchy Reigns/Max Anarchy - Jazz House [SEGA!]
    Identified by: Nobody...

I've never been a fan of games where the sequel is released for a console that the prequel isn't, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy its soundtrack. (Its gameplay is... a different story.)
  44. Killer is Dead - Scarlett Challenge
    Identified by: Nobody...

The last of what I call the "SUDA51 Gets Screwed By the Publishers Trilogy", preceded by Shadows of the Damned and Lollipop Chainsaw. Yes, Gigolo Mode is an embarrassment, but this could/should have been something special.
  45. Chibi-Robo! - Scrubbing with the Toothbrush
    Identified by: Bee Kirby (Solo!)

I don't know why I find this such a cozy song. Maybe it's the fact that you can tell the playing is more refined with each go-around or something. All I know is that I'm not using that toothbrush.
  46. SUPERBEAT XONiC - "Moonlight" Sonata 3rd Movement
    Identified by: kitikami (Solo!)

I've always been a fan of weird arrangements of classical music. I guess you could say it saps the culture from the originals, but... uh... hm.
  47. Rayman Legends - Dive Another Day
    Identified by: kitikami (Solo!)

One of these days I'll stop pronouncing this game as "Rayman Leg Ends". Today is not that day.
  48. Gran Turismo 5 Prologue - SURV1V3
Identified by: kitikami, Matt is me, NastCF, Reecer7

I gave full credit for those who said Gran Turismo 6, if only because this is a song with lyrics whose first hit on YouTube is from that game rather than its original title. If that weren't the case, I probably would have been a bit less lenient, but considering this was originally added as a freebie it's only fair.
  49. Sega Super GT/Scud Race - Groovin' Daylight [SEGA!...obviously]
    Identified by: Nobody...

How long do you think, in real time, you could keep up a series of "woo! Unh!"s?
  50. The King of Fighters XIV - Belief (Kim Team BGM) [SEGA!]
    Identified by: Nobody...

Yes, this is a SEGA game! The North American release was published by Atlus, despite development being done by SNK. Hooray for teamwork!
  51. Locoroco - Panguraratta ~ Locoroco Red's Theme
    Identified by: Bee Kirby, kitikami

Someone transcribed these lyrics. Take a moment to take this information in, and salute the poor soul who did so.
  52. Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Kelp Forest
    Identified by: Nobody...

After seeing just how little of the main game the HD remake is changing, I have to assume that it's less out of nostalgia, and more out of the realization that their first time around went incredibly well. The music is no exception!
  53. Antz (Game Boy Color) - Stage 9
    Identified by: NastCF (Solo!)

Lyrics to this song, as written by my sister:
    "What an amazing game~
    What a fantastic game~
[repeat until I have an aneurysm]"
  54. Ridge Racer 64 - Revolver
    Identified by: Nobody...

Bizarrely, this game was both published and developed by Nintendo, rather than having work done by Namco (prior to their merge with Bandai). But then Bandai did work on it... when it was ported to the DS. What?
  55. Mr. Bones - Don't Think, Play [SEGA!]
    Identified by: Bee Kirby (Solo!)

Why yes, I do sing the name of this game to the tune of "Mr. Jones" by Counting Crows. Why do you ask?
  56. The House of the Dead: Overkill - Torn Out Twisted [SEGA!]
    Identified by: Nobody...

Personally, I prefer to do my zombie killing through typing, but whatever gets the job done. (I accidentally used a version that cut out the snippets of in-game dialogue assuming it was the genuine article; sorry for not using the real one!)
  57. Hatsune Miku: Project Diva X - Ending Medley ~ Ultimate Exquisite Rampage [SEGA!]
    Identified by: NastCF (Solo!)
    Half-identified by: El_Yosh, kitikami, Reecer7

The difference between this take on wowaka's "Two-Sided Lovers/Ura-Omote Lovers" is that it builds up speed as it proceeds, rather than maintaining the same tempo throughout. Well done to our solo guesser for noticing the difference!
  58. Paper Mario: Color Splash - Tangerino Grill
    Identified by: Nobody...

What a good game... to watch being played by someone else.
  59. 10,000 Bullets/Moonlit Shadow - Opening Theme
Identified by: kitikami, Matt is me

I have absolutely no interest in playing this game. I have absolutely all of the interest in making sure people hear this song.
  60. Beetle Adventure Racing! - Main Menu
    Identified by: Nobody...

Augh, what a heartbreaker. I'm disappointed to see that no one else recognized this song. Make a sequel, you cowards! You had plans to do so once already!

    Extra Credit
    All identified by: kitikami (Solo!)
    Legendary Axe - Stage 1
    Night Trap - Party Time
    Pokémon X/Y - Route 15
    Rayxanber 3 - Stage 3
The placements!
In 9th place, with -3 points... Validon98!
While I appreciate your enthusiasm, it's clear that you need to focus it to truly let your talent shine. But look on the bright side: I don't think anyone else has scored in the negatives before. Making history!

In 8th place, with 6 points... Rwars!
Two answers given, and both were correct, yet I can't help but feel like you were holding back. Don't be afraid to step out of your shell next time!

In 7th place, with 7 points... Reecer7!
An incredibly fitting result, but not the one I imagine you were hoping for.

In 6th place, with 12 points... Matt is me!
I apologize for one of your hints leading you in the wrong direction, but I'm glad that the other two helped. Keep up the good work!

In 5th place, with 17 points... Cyril!
I can't say yours was a... "conventional" strategy, but I'm not one to argue with one that works.

In 4th place, with 20 points... El_Yosh!
It stinks to be on the bubble. I wish you had updated your answers after asking for hints!

In 3rd place, with 24 points... Bee Kirby!
No shame in being on the less active side, especially if it results in a solid bronze finish.

In 2nd place, with 36 points... NastCF!
A big boost from being the sole spotter of the intruder nets you the silver medal. Splendid!

In 1st place, with 49 points... kitikami!
Never let it be said that extra credit doesn't pay off, especially when you find an example that I had originally missed! Combine that with some stellar solo bonuses, and you have the makings of a champion. Congratulations!
Again, thank you all for participating, and I hope you enjoyed what I had to offer. Until next time, you must listen to SEGA music! Listen until your ears bleed; until your ears bleed!

man I knew #10 was some sonic GBA game but i couldn't figure out which! i forgot that one existed. my strategy of randomly filling out the entire sheet with one game always gets me a tiny amount of points tho. i love it.
also lol i knew #12 because i did play that game 5 years ago and then promptly forgot about its existence but also can you fault me for thinking it sounds exactly like a billy hatcher song
i wouldn't have gotten 47 despite playing that game a billion times because that's like one of the most generic songs in the game lol, i just marked it down as "generic spy music" oops
5th place is better than i usually do :rao:
i've honestly never played a video game in my life

i'm a sham. i'm a goddamn strawman of a human being. so many of these i was just inches away from knowing. super monkey ball 2 was one of the soundtracks i specifically listened to on a lark that it might be on the list, and yet i just completely didn't notice that it was???? i should absolutely know the soundtracks to to the moon and shenmue better than this. i've played the silver case and love its music, i just don't know anything about the 25th ward.

AND WORST OF ALL, PLEASE DIRECT YOUR ATTENTION TO MY AVATAR ON THE RIGHT
IT IS OFFICIAL ART CREATED FOR DAI GYAKUTEN SAIBAN (for an april fools day gag)
DID I GET THE DAI GYAKUTEN SAIBAN SONG?
NO. NO I DIDN'T. WHAT I DID DO WAS LISTEN TO IT AND GO "oh boy, this reminds me a lot of the four dai gyakuten saiban songs i have allowed myself to listen to before actually playing the game. i sure hope this isn't dgs because they're the only ace attorney content i wouldn't be able to name the soundtracks of by heart. that would just be silly! surely if there was an ace attorney song it'd be like investigations or something right"
AND THEN I DIDN'T PUT THAT CLEAR GUESS DOWN ON PAPER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

but anyway hey fun time thanks for the contest!
call me reecer6, not reecer7, please! gotta maintain that same internet brand. actually i'm cro-iba now, it's cooler

Yo, The 25th Ward is less than five bucks on Steam right now. Please buy it! If you liked the first one you'll like this one, but maybe not as much! A man in a dumpster says you should buy terrible tasting beverages!

Oh man!

My first guess when I heard 24 was that it was some SilvaGunner version of a Banjo song. I even went through both Banjo soundtracks in their entirety to no avail. So I don't think I would've guessed it if I didn't ask for a hint!

And congrats to kitikami for the win :rao:

Ok, I didn't participate because I knew this would be too hard, and after seeing the answers I can say with confidence that I wouldn't have been able to get a single one of them. Mostly because the only games on this list i've played are Rayman Legends and Beetle Adventure Racing, and even for those I don't think I would've been able to pinpoint that it was from those games. Also maybe Pepsiman, but I feel like I would've missed that too.

That being said, for the people who do enjoy this thing, there's a neat website called VGM-quiz https://www.vgm-quiz.com/ just for this kind of thing. This is not an ad or anything, just thought people who participated here might enjoy that too lol

Man, I should've entered so Birdman wouldn't have gone unsolved :(

I probably wouldn't have done too well though. My knowledge of game OSTs is slipping

Thanks SirChasm for running this.

Even after watching raocow play it, i would have never guessed #8 was a Mega Man track.

I really like #30, not surprised to find out it's Yoko Kanno. Napple Tale looks really cool in general, i'll have to check it out. And speaking of Cowboy Bebop's soundtrack, the 10,000 Bullets song sounds like it could be directly off of it.

Great contest, nice work! Putting 59 into a contest that contains a genuine Yoko Kanno track in 30 is a killer move.

Like kitikami said, 59 sounds like something out of Bebop.

Oh I just noticed the results, huh, I uh, didn't think I'd get in the negatives (I didn't realize just guessing which ones were Sega ones was just gonna be a penalty, wouldn't have done that otherwise, kinda feel... bad that that's even a scoring system thing at all but meh, so it goes). Ah well. Lots of stuff I honestly never heard of or recognized so I would've been last either way. And hey, that's not a "sorta" on Linkle's theme. :<
Because Touhou OCs can in fact exist, sounds fake I know.

I can't change my username but I go by Vali/Claire now (aka call me Vali or Claire at your leisure ^^).

I never update this currently playing section anymore, it's probably an RPG or something.

....I had been waiting for the stickied thread to update for weeks, never knowing results were already here. Haha, welp.

24 was the intruder, that one surprises me. I recognized it as Grant Kirkhope immedietly, so I went for one of the Banjo's and was reasonably confident. I did say in my answer "sounds like couldren keep but...a bit different than I remember it? But still...it's close...", so I'll take that as a near win for me recognizing that something was off about it.

On the same vein (though not by Kirkhope) I'm a bit bummed I didn't get the Impoosible Lair one. I own that soundtrack ('cause playtonic just gave it to all of the original backers a bit ago), but I haven't listened to it since beating the game right after it came out.

12 points is still better than I thought I did, though! I'm happy with it. Hints were super helpful, even if I did get one of those wrong.

Thanks for hosting!
