Fun Sonic Facts!

In a last ditch attempt to give the aging Game Gear some 'wow' factor to overcome the Game Boy, Sonic Blast was to use pre-rendered graphics, which would look much fancier than regular spritework. However, on hardware as low-end as the Game Gear, this decision came at terrible cost. To ensure even a paltry amount of detail was visible on the low resolution screen, both Sonic and Knuckles are absolutely huge, leaving little camera space for things like 'enemies' or 'level design' or 'instant death'.

The year is 1996, and Aspect Co. Ltd still does not quite grasp the concept of sprite resolution vs screen resolution, and why bigger sprites aren't always the best idea ever.

This is one of my least favorite games ever. It's just bad, and not even in an entertaining way. At its best it's just there, at its worst it's just frustrating. I'll probably give a more detailed version of my thoughts once it's done, but :P

Seconding that. It's way down there on the list for me of the ones I've played. I'd say it's probably my least favorite 2D Sonic, to be honest.

wait. double-jump. per-zone special stages where the first act's functions purely as a bonus while the second act's is the only one with the emerald.

why does it feel like some of the later 3d games were taking cues from this

Geez, some of the previous levels had some cool visual things going on, but Red Volcano is hideous. Everything has the same texture, and uses shade of purple, there's no background objects. Was the plan that if they put all the super ugly levels late into the game, people won't realise that the game isn't all that impressive until it's too late?

so some way or another i got on the track of thinking how sonic seems to be pretty damn average aside from his speed and athleticism ( and pilot license i guess ) despite the fact that he destroys robots on a regular basis and thus has to be pretty strong, right?

but then i remember that not only can a chao destroy eggman's robots, it does so far easier than sonic can

so now i'm thinking that the best building material eggman can scrounge up is like, metallic-looking styrofoam and that's why he has to constantly be on the look out for weird energy sources - anything normal would just lead to his robots catching on fire as soon as he turned them on

The one good thing I can say about this game is that the devs at least made it so you don't lose all your rings upon being hit.

Unfriendly detection for collecting rings seems to be a theme in the 8-bit games. It seems like a lot of them make ring collection more finicky or frustrating than the 16-bit games, and Sonic's sprite is constantly passing through rings to no avail in these games.
