Fun Sonic Facts!
With the genius idea of Lock-On Technology, The first game, simply titled 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3', would be an experience that could stand on its own. However, left inside the code for the game were numerous pointers for the second half to take advantage of using Lock-On Technology. Wanting people to be able to play the game as they intended, Sonic Team would make the next game released (titled Sonic & Knuckles) "lock on" to the previous title through a specially designed port in the cartridge. It was only with the two cartridges together that the true Sonic 3 would start, with all three characters, bonus rounds, and the fourteen Special Stages.
Knowing that people would be essentially paying for what should have been one game twice, Sonic Team wanted to try making the lock-on port "backwards compatible" with their previous Sonic outings. Developing a special patch that allowed the game to connect to Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the public was given the option to run through the classic game with Knuckles the Echidna. The ability to play with Knuckles in Sonic 1 was also considered, but halted as Sonic 1 did not play nice with Knuckles either in its use of the palette or in the level design. Instead, the "Blue Sphere" minigame was created, that allowed an almost limitless amount of Sonic 3-styled Special Stages to be played when the first game was connected.
Fun Level Facts!
Carnival Night Zone's concept came from the portable rides Yuji Naka saw when he visited shopping centers on his days off. Even though the rides were meant to evoke a sense of fun akin to a real carnival, Naka thought that most of them just pushed and spun their occupant around 'really fast', to the point that, for him, they seemed more scary than fun.

But the passive effect of the Electric Shield, Ring Magnetism, is applied immediately - which offsets Super Sonic's ring countdown drastically! It really does show just how overpowered the electric shield is compared to its counterparts.

Re: All The SOUPER S@nics - 3&K - Invincible
Carnival Night, Ice Cap, and Launch Base all have completely new music tracks in the PC collection! Here's Carnival Night Act 1 brought to you by Windows 95 MIDI sequencing. I honestly really love this track. Way better than minimal depressing carny music with Entrance of the Gladiators slapped in to make sure you're aware Carnival Night is a carnival.
Something super rad to note is that the Sonic 3 Complete hack (which I think was mentioned before in the thread?) has all these extra tracks available for playing ingame, applied to the Genesis soundchip. Here's a video of Carnival Night 1 with the Collection track so you can see how it fits.
Oh, and the official reason for changing these tracks is that they couldn't be satisfactorily replicated in MIDI. So take that as you will.

I much prefer the Collection versions of Carnival Night and Launch Base. The Collection Ice Cap is great but the original is one of my favorite tracks in S3&K and it doesn't quite reach that.

Re: All The SOUPER S@nics - 3&K - Invincible
gah why'd you have to link to a version using the crappy windows default microsoft gs wavetable synth (i don't blame you there are very few videos on youtube that don't use it)
anyway, here's the version that uses a soundfont emulating GUS
and while i'm at it here's the fm versiom recorded off a soundblaster 16

I think it's important to know what the majority of shmucks trying to play console games on their parent's PC in the 90s got to experience.

Re: All The SOUPER S@nics - 3&K - Invincible
yeah i have issues with tails being drawn as a bara too
i always identified with tails as a little lion cub so seeing him sexualized just makes me all kinds of uncomfortable on top of the "is 8 years old" aspect
i did lowkey ship him with klonoa and my fursona/self insert sonic OC when i was like 10-11 though, a bit before i got into furries and started identifying as queer (i had suspicions of being bi though)
and yes the oc was made in a fucking sonic character maker because what else

Re: All The SOUPER S@nics - 3&K - Invincible
Carnival Night 2 PC is my favorite of the new tracks, it's SO good. Also, yeah, the Genesis Act 2 is just "here's the exact same song again but worse". It's almost a blessing to override it with the super theme. Almost.
Also, the more you explained why the barrel would stump a younger player, the more I thought "wow, I feel like this might have confused modern-day raocow if he didn't already know". Especially the whole "it looks like jumping is doing something so I'm gonna keep trying it"...
Not to compare raocow to a two-year-old, of course! It's just amusing to realize that yeah, things are confusing.

Re: All The SOUPER S@nics - 3&K - Invincible
Here's another wrinkle to the great barrel quandry. As a kid, I assumed that I MIGHT have been able to make the barrel work just by jumping, but Tails getting on right after me was messing it up completely. I tried over and over to jump on it without making Tails do the same, or some crazy timing where he might jump on it in a way that doesn't interrupt its momentum.

Fun Sonic Facts!
For the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, an incredible marketing event was planned. Having been slated for release on February 2nd in the United States (as the game simply could not hit a Christmas season release date, SEGA execs grumpily accepted a February date as it was a time with little competition), the release date was dubbed "Hedgehog Day" by marketing, as their eyes had practically sparkled with delight when it was released that the date also happened to be "Groundhog Day."
From McDonald's toys to tie-ins with Lifesavers and Spaghetti-O's, Sonic was everywhere, everything amping up the tension for the title's premiere in the states. The festivities went into full swing when the game "officially" premiered in the town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, the home of Groundhog Day. Bringing out the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Sonic balloon, the game was ushered out like an inanimate rock star, complete with miniature Sonic balloons for the kids, and kiosks set up in the local Junior High so everyone from the youngest kid obsessed with Sonic to the top hatted guardians of the groundhog could experience Sonic 3 firsthand.

"The Barrel" is the only part of Sonic 3 Yuji Naka has ever publicly apologized for.
