it is mindboggling how many sonic games were produced between 2 and 3. they just really went all out on making him a Phenomenon like immediately.

That's been perhaps the most striking revelation of this series thus far--just how engineered the success of Sonic apparently was. Mario became a phenomenon because he starred in a wildly successful arcade game--and one which provided a level of characterization and personality not really hitherto seen in video games--and that success spawned all sorts of sequels and spinoffs, many of which were even more successful, and eventually his image is plastered everywhere and he's featured in goofy disposable dreck like Mario Teaches Typing and so forth. Such is the usual development for breakout characters.

With Sonic, on the other hand, someone clearly said, "Hey, you know what happened with Mario? Let's do that." And tellingly enough, his first appearance is as a hood ornament in Rad Mobile--in effect, he's already being presented to us in the form of merchandise for his franchise before said franchise even exists. And while his first proper game was indeed a major success in its own right, Sega began flooding the market with Mario-Teaches-Typing-style bilge almost immediately. This wasn't the usually sort of silliness that eventually comes to surround a sufficiently successful series--Sega wanted sonic to be a brand, and they wasted no time marketing him as such, before he had even amassed a significant amount of real content.

I can't hear a video game-y rendition of Turkish March without immediately being reminded of The End is Nigh.

The platforming in this game and the platforming in that game are at least slightly different.

I think that pinball game here might've controlled better than Spinball 16 and 8 bit.

This was raocow jamming out at the end there.

Also, I think the pages didn't de-sync. Rather, that last page actually had two different things? maybe?
I'm really into the idea of sending off every AtS video with "PEACE!" from now on. :rao:

I actually was gonna post it last night but then I got sidetracked trying to find out if there were any bits that raocow or I missed, and then I fell asleep.

All The Hill Zones tally:
  • 6 Green Hill Zones
  • 18 Green Hill Zone Acts total*
  • 3 versions of the Nakamura GHZ theme
  • 7 versions of JP/EU Sonic CD's "You Can Do Anything" theme
  • 8 (some kinda) Hill Zones total
  • 23 (some kinda) Hill Zone Acts total
  • 1 misc Hill-Type Zone(the Hill Top clause)
*19 if you decide to count that single HUB screen as an act, which I won't.

hello, welcome to my new console. it's very cheap so unfortunately its soundchip supports zero timbre, all you've got is square waves. what sort of game would you like to make for it?

hmmm i'm thinking a game where you listen to and learn about music, and how to differentiate the sounds of different instruments

You're not playing Vanilla Sonic 3 first and then playing Sonic and Knuckles or Sonic 3 as Knuckles later?

You're not getting the true Sonic 3 experience ;_;

Re: All the Dante from Devil May Cry

Post by Awoo »

I feel like there are enough legitimate differences between playing Sonic 3 vanilla and Sonic 3& Knuckles that it really does justify doing it differently. Boss music and tons of other things that are totally missed out on!

The mid-boss music from Vanilla 3 is totally missing in & Knuckles, not to mention the special stages from the midpoints.

Invincibility music, Super Sonic music, Knuckles' theme, there's so much! The original final boss of Launch Base is totally cut from the &Knuckles playthrough for Sonic!

I thought the goal of AtS was to play through the series in the original presentation as much as possible?

It's your playthrough but it still makes me kinda sad :atsy:

Please hear me out

Also wasn't there at least one game released between 3 and Sonic & Knuckles? I don't know for sure but, still!

sorry awoo, this is what I felt was the most straight forward way of going through everything. and like, the game combination is how the game was meant to be, at least according to the developers, and I'm going to respect that

for what it's worth the original boss from launch base IS still there, it's what you fight when you play as knuckles

for the things like music and whatnot, at the end of this game's run I can always do a quick run of sonic 3 act 1 to at least preserve the major differences in terms of music and other little details

and finally, there was a chunk of the games I've played that where between 3 and K, I'm going by K's release date for the playthrough, as that's when the intended completed game was available.

Fun(?) Fact: While you can still buy Sonic 3 & Knuckles on PC for $5, Sega seems to be unwilling or unable to release it in their more recent game compilations like the console versions of the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive Classics collection that came out last year, or the imminent Genesis/Mega Drive Mini console.

Fair enough, raocow! I apologise if I came off as rude in any way, since I can be pretty passionate about things I love.

Until a few years ago 3&K was also the only way I had ever played Sonic 3, even considering that my family had the originals for Genesis and the Sonic PC collection later at the time. The original build has since grown on me quite a lot, especially from a friend at Sonic Retro that I haven't talked to in years. It's probably no coincidence that they also introduced me to the beta builds of Sonic 2 (notably the Simon Wai prototype) so maybe that had something to do with it.

Don't wanna get in your way or rain on your parade. Thanks, raocow!

Perhaps to make up for it, you could play as Sonic 3 using Knuckles! (glitchy Sonic 3 boss spoilers in that link for any latecomers)
