Super Mario 63 - FINAL FLASH (game)

Post by Blivsey »

Image

Have you ever wanted to play all the 3D Marios (as of Galaxy), but as one big jumbled 2D experience? Look no further.

Created by Runouw (not to be confused with raocow), Super Mario 63 is a Flash fangame released in 2009 that takes several elements from across the Mario series and mashes them together into a big ol' adventure with plenty of collectables, several unlockables, and a bunch of neat features besides.

The original home page
Since Flash is being phased out of browsers, you can play it through Flashpoint instead.

1 – timed jumps on moving bars
2 – secrets in the shallows & sky
3 – big bob-omb on the summit
4 – shining atop the pyramid
5 – bowser in the dark world
6 – castle secret star
7 – into the igloo
8 – free flying for 8 red coins
9 – metal-head mario can move!
10 – elevator tour in the volcano
11 – secret of the haunted books
12 – coins amassed in a maze
13 – go to town for red coins
14 – to the top of the fortress
15 – hot-foot-it into the volcano
16 – the pit and the pendulums
17 – swingin' in the breeze
18 – collect the caps...
19 – tricky triangles!
20 – the big house in the sky
21 – get a hand
22 – breathtaking view from the bridge
FINAL – 23 – shoot into the wild blue

Oh yeah I can think of at least one moment where you stared at the controls they were presenting and probably thought "huh"

For anyone who can't play flash in their browsers because flash in browsers is starting to not become a thing anymore, Super Mario 63 is availaible on Flashpoint as well: http://bluemaxima.org/flashpoint/

Oh man, after all those Kremlings it's hard to believe that raocow's gonna beat up some Klay fighters! :monstrosity:

wasn't that game actually really bad? I'm not too familiar with the Klay Fighter series tbh

so far this tutorial is a disappointment compared to the only good level in video game history, the highway in megaman x. this is outrageous and a disgrace to the mario legacy how dare you renault

please consider ultimate flash sonic just for a one shot sometime

also the peach sprite is from super princess peach. underrated game

Man, romhacks sure look weird these days nyoro~n

I can't tell for sure, but aren't some of the sprites mixed from NSMB and the Mario and Luigi games, or is it mostly custom based off one or the other? Someone with actual knowledge would know!

How long is this game, anyhow? I must know, for SCIENCE :sheath:

The Peach, Toad and Bowser sprites are from Super Princess Peach, the Goomba sprites are from Yoshi's Island. It's basically just a big mishmash.

Yeah, the music panning is super weird in this game. Someone in the comments suggested that it might be because Mario is the audio source, which seems likely since the panning seems to happen when Mario is on the side of the screen. Really bizarre.

oh boy

it's been so, so long since i've seen a fangame that stapled together so many different, different graphics and resources from mfgg without any rhyme, reason, or quality control, and called it a day

i spent an upsetting amount of time with that level creator in my youth

also rao is right, the movement in this game is very fluid and exploitable! you got a taste near the end with dive-chaining, which if done correctly can get you some wild speed.

Also also, a nice touch: if you aren't at full health, you can see how many coins you need to refill a wedge by looking at how many of the letters in POWER are dimmed. Clever clever

I remember playing this game as a little kid. I'm pretty sure I played a version that didn't have any of that tutorial stuff because I don't remember anything in today's video. That was also a very long time ago so I could just have totally forgotten too!

Yeah I must have played a beta version because mine didn't even have a big hub or story, just a room of levels. Am I remembering this right?

Runouw made a game called "Super Mario Sunshine 64" that could be called a beta of this. From what I recall, it was mostly just an attempt to make some levels from Super Mario 64 in 2d, with Fludd added, whereas this game tries to do a lot more (and succeeds at a lot of that, as I recall).
Runouw seems to have taken "Super Mario Sunshine 64" off of Newgrounds (and his site), but you can find it in other places. From what I briefly played to jog my memory, it barely has a tutorial and does seem to just have a room of levels. While I'm tempted to play it further... I'd honestly rather just replay this instead. I remember almost 100%ing it when it came out.

There is some really weird stuff going on with Mario's sprite. It really does seem like at some point the dev wanted Mario to be wearing a t-shirt but didn't fully commit and now there's just a handful of random sprites edited to have Mario wearing a t-shirt. Obviously there's the jumping sprite where his sleeves disappear, but you can see it even more clearly in this animation:

"Forget about Mario, there's no way he can even get into the Castle."
Mario proceeds to casually enter via the front door.

Confirmed, Bowser is tsundere for Mario and it's just his way of inviting him. Hence the Power Star Shine Sprite just lying outside.

I actually finished this game 100% literally today, what an incredible coincidence lol

This is gonna be interesting! The movement tech in this game is super cool, you can get away with so much improvised and stupid stuff that i love it
