Man, I love the idea of Mecha Green Hill Zone. We've had several Green Hill type areas, and beyond that, multiple literal Green Hill(s) Zones, but it feels good to see it moved to later in the game and gone to hell. Even though it doesn't do the classic Genesis Sonic 1 mix of the song, it's still a remix of Sonic 2 8-Bit's Green Hill Zone. Of course, that also means it, too, includes a bit of the unofficial Sonic franchise themesong, You Can Do Anything, from Sonic CD JP. (I wonder how the song would sound if we swapped it out with notes from Sonic Boom instead?)

All The Hill Zones tally:
  • 4 Green Hill Zones
  • 12 Green Hill Zone Acts total
  • 3 versions of the Nakamura GHZ theme
  • 6 (some kinda) Hill Zones
  • 17 (some kinda) Hill Zone Acts total
  • 1 misc Hill-Type Zone(the Hill Top clause)
Of course, the downside to all this, is that such a neat idea is in an 8-bit title, doomed to never get any official representation outside of GCN-era Sonic collections, with a good amount of emptiness. Also, "first zone becomes later-game zone" isn't quite as exciting when Sonic 2 8-bit did that, even if it feels like they just swapped the order of the levels back then. Still, the level has a few neat gimmicks(I personally like the sideways platform you have to keep running on) and I got a rush of memories that confirmed I did indeed own Sonic Chaos as a kid and didn't mix it up with one of the others, since I remember this stage's concept fondly.

It's supposed to be a cruel mockery, much like the rest of the stage.

The Mecha Green Hill Zone is the one thing in addition to the opening chase scene which reminded me that I did, in fact, play this game as a child. Somehow I remembered it having a lot more animation, though, with rotating pinwheel flowers and the like. It *is* a pretty striking stage idea, but alas, like most things, it's sort of squandered in this game.

Fun Sonic Facts!

Keeping with Eggman's uncreative streak, today's boss is called the Sphere-O-Bot. The tiny birds it holds within it are Mecha Hiyoko (Mecha Chick) from Sky High Zone in the Game Gear version of Sonic 2.

Fun raocow facts!

raocow didn't explore the bottom part of Aqua Planet 2 which would have been hilarious as it is an annoying maze in the water full of springboards throwing you back and water physics make it hard to control Sonic when he touches one. Also no rings in water!

Tomorrow will be the last zone! And I applaude raocow if he manages to avoid both special stages in the first and second act because this is a rings galore.
I see what you did there...

Fun Sonic Facts!

The only difference after defeating the Laser Walker in the Good Ending is that Eggman drops the last Chaos Emerald.

That's it.

You have an idea for the next "make a good present"!

Yup, that last boss was nerve-wrecking as a kid, I guess we found that out by mistake with my father.

That third bonus zone, I forgot about it, but...who designed that? It repeats itself for no reason and you have to know you have to press up at one point to get the emerald. I guess the invincibility boxes are here in front of tubes to avoid glitches I don't know, there are no traps or stuff that need an invincibily. I thought the corners with a "X" on them where spikes when I played it but no.

It was a sad game yeah, and what triggers me the most is Robotnik appearing not in a round egg-shaped machine, but a squared one. Yup it changes shape but it doesn't look as round as usual. Also Sonic's design looks wrong, like it was not the mascot I used to know.

One of the first real flops of the franchise.
I see what you did there...

Re: All The S@nics - Spinball - Going Full Tilt

Post by Heavy Sigh »

Fun Sonic Facts!

The successful release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 sent the Sonic franchise, and Sega as a whole, soaring to new heights during 1993. Thus, the logical next step was to make Sonic 3. However, delays in production left a Christmas release impossible, but letting the season slip by without a game would give Nintendo a perfect opening to break Sega's winning streak. Therefore, to maintain the franchise's momentum a number of spinoffs were commissioned, among which was Sonic Spinball.

Sonic Team had moved to the United States to develop Sonic 2, with the project a joint effort between the Japanese staff of the original game, and Sega Technical Institute. However, Yuji Naka had flatly ordered that the American staff be kept away from Sonic 3's development, leaving them to pursue other projects. Spinball was one such concept - devised entirely by STI with virtually no input from Sonic Team, it stands as the first entirely Western-produced Sonic game designed with a Western audience in mind.

spinball sucks ass. aesthetic is really nice but gameplay is a trash fire

i can withstand most of the really shitty sonic games like 06 and shadow but this is up there with dark brotherhood in terms of "i can't fucking play this"

also does toxic caves literally just repurpose hidden palace graphics at bits

this is the definitive sonic spinball experience.

let's note that this is by far the least hostile and least confusing level to navigate. fun times are in store.

also i think this was coded in c? i'd commend it like i do with chrono trigger but with all the janky ass physics im just wondering how unoptimized this game's code is like c assemblers weren't very good in 1993 i think

this is assuming square bothered to optimize most of the code for chrono trigger before getting it out in ye old japania

raocow you have to start over, you missed the secret bonus minigame for getting all the rings in the level.

Fun fact, this game has a two player mode. In it, you just take turns, with each player playing until they either die or beat the game, then control switches to the other player. Not until they beat the level, until they beat the game. I know this, because my brother is way too good at this game. He'd let me go first, I'd die in a few minutes in level 1, then I'd sit and watch while he beat the entire game in one go.

I tried playing the Game Gear version of this once. It was almost literally unplayable (and there was certainly no "all flippers" button). This, in contrast, I'm assured is "the good one", so I expect no problems for raocow from here on out.
