Wasn't there like a SNES Final Fantasy or something that had an interactive opera?

Portal 2 would like a word with you.

Anyway, yeah, it’s always struck me as incredibly bizarre that the final boss of this game is literally just a slightly harder boss fight than the other ones... there’s no big climax or special gimmick introduced to tie all of the time travel shenanigans together. Why is Eggman defeated for real when you beat him here, as opposed to any other time you’ve fought him? True to form, Sonic CD just ends arbitrarily when it runs out of content to show you.

hold on, the ending cinematic is making me think: are eggman's robots in this one powered by flowers instead of animals

like i understand animals perpetually running on a wheel or something, but how's a flower supposed to generate electricity?? it doesn't even have light!
call me reecer6, not reecer7, please! gotta maintain that same internet brand. actually i'm cro-iba now, it's cooler

Fair enough, different strokes for different folks. I probably took it a bit too personally, but it is one thing to say "it weirds me out" and another to say "it's too weird period".

It isn't super common but it's not rare either, which you'd know if you checked the examples on the TV Tropes page for the trope you named :P
Opera vocals, especially the One-Woman Wail, are pretty versatile and can help add a tragic, ominous, or haunting/unsettling quality to music, make it more dramatic or theatrical, convey things like affluence or poshness, power, egotism, unpredictability, etc.

I've already dabbled with opera vox myself in a few pieces -- it's something I've actually been wanting to do more of for a good long while, but the less common a vocal style is and the harder it is to perform, the more expensive the flexible, high-quality samples and VSTs for it get.

Aside from the FF6 opera scene and Portal 2 examples other folks have already mentioned, here's a bunch more, mostly OWWs (spoilered for compactness but also because a lot of these are pretty spoilery for their respective games): If we were to expand it to other mediums, some fairly mainstream anime examples of the top of my head: Gurren Lagann, Hellsing Ultimate, Death Note, My Hero Academia. That only scratches the surface but it's 3:45ish AM (forgot to adjust my system clock to a new time zone) on my end and you'd be better off checking TV Tropes or asking a bigger weeb than me anyway.

Batman Arkham Knight also had the opera music that Professor Pyg listened to.

The animals are being used as "living batteries" for badniks, they're "cyberized". The seeds of the flowers on the Little Planet must be magical or full of energy or something to be used as power sources.

It's almost a shame that DT3 spoiled Metal Sonic KAI for raocow, but I'm still looking forward to big ol' red.

Bloodborne also has some spooky orchestral music with a solo woman singer. I can't say I know the proper definition of opera but I think this counts? It's beautiful and worth a listen regardless.

I should also add that I don't think opera music in a video game is anywhere NEAR as weird as all the Sonic games that have straight up pop songs with literal lyrics describing how cool and fast the protagonist is. I bet that would be harder to find examples of in games than opera.

That's actually because they're more based on image songs from anime tbh

A couple other examples of game OSTs prominently featuring opera:

Doesn't Nier have an opera boss?
And I don't know if it counts, but The Great Mighty Poo is kind of like that lol

dangit, I forgot about the Great Mighty Poo. And yeah, the Nier boss was one of the ones I listed.

At some point we should offload all of these to an Opera in Video Game Music thread or something because this is too great of a list to have buried here in the AtS thread

Bean wrote: 4 years ago Yeah, you said the same thing about this game I did. There's literally no reason to go to the future outside of the third level in each area. Give me something to do there or it comes off as pointless, and it is.
there's technically a point to the future. bad futures have broken down enemies that are weak and good futures have no enemies, so supposedly its easier to get the rings for lives/getting good ending via time stones . though the game isnt really hard enough to warrent that.

That and also youre not really expected to know how to get the good ending the first playthrough , youre expected to just see bad futures then learn how to fix them and go "wow this sure looks a lot nicer"

Yeah, by Voltgloss's post we passed the threshold of 'not that many examples'.
Doesn't mean I like the JP final boss track.

So how did Whitehead get the go ahead from Sega to remake this game in 2011?

And that dislike is perfectly valid. At this point I'm just interested in compiling a collection for its own sake, but yeah, there are still other Sonic CD-related things to talk about and we can opera it up in another thread so I'll go ahead and make one to copy all these Youtube links into.
