I think the physics engine is refined to make Sonic play more like the normal Mega Drive games instead of the janky weird floaty physics of the Mega CD game

The physics aren't actually all that different between the SCD version and the Steam remake (if I remember right, the steam remake was built by reverse-engineering the SCD version specifically so the remake would feel like the original).

Mostly you're just losing on a running save and the option to pick between soundtracks. And playing as Miles after full-clearing the game, but Miles can't get one of the roboticizers anyway.

CD having some awkward gameplay and levels doesn't really make me dislike it because Sonic's just kind of like that to me already...
Well it is a decent hack but sometime its just too repetitif there no level that actually pop in your face and your like oh yeah that level they all ressemble themselves and just monster along the way.

here's a list of differences: https://sonic.fandom.com/wiki/Sonic_the ... )#Gameplay

honestly, probably better to just stick to the Sega CD original, lest we get into debates about what version to use for other games, like SonicR or Sonic 3D Blast

hot take: you're not missing out on much aside from music and graphics (regardless if you prefer the US soundtrack to JP/PAL or not, they're both pretty nice)

though i've heard the recent rerelease from a few years back makes it more palatable? no idea since i've never played it myself
sonic CD is fun if you like explory platformers (which I do) and aside from two really stupid bs level design issues related to such it's a good game. it's just not very much like a traditional sonic game on the whole

There's one thing that just massively bugs me about Sonic CD.

There's no point in travelling to the future, ever. It's just a trap that forces you to find a Past sign if you do trigger it.

sonic cd was the only one i had as a kid (had the old pc version) so it's the only one i'm any good at.
i was so upset when the family computer was upgraded to windows xp and i couldn't play it anymore

edit: on second thought, i'm not sure why it being the only one i played as a kid makes it the only one i'm good at...

It's kind of fun to travel to the future if you've made it good, since there are less hazards/enemies. I like if nothing else than for the soundtrack in some cases.

Guess how much fun those randomly-spaced falling rocks are when they spawn significantly closer to the floor and therefore need less travel time

Fun Sonic Facts!

The inobuta Mecha (literally Pig-Boar Robot) is one of the only bosses in the game whose projectile attack can be completely disabled if Sonic attacks it fast enough.

Is there an easy way to send raocow a completed save for the Steam version of Sonic CD? I was just thinking that it might be worth giving it the "Mega Man & Bass" treatment. Do a Sonic run on the Sega CD version using one soundtrack (Probably the Japanese one because I think that the Steam remake removes the lyrics to the opening theme), and then a Tails run on the Steam remake using the other soundtrack, when we eventually get to that point.

By the way, since the topic came up already, does that mean that Sonic CD came out before Sonic 2 on the Genesis/Mega Drive? I could have sworn that was the case, since both games were in production simultaneously, but I wasn't 100% sure which one came out first.

I wouldn't be able to tell you why I like Sonic CD, personally. Thinking about it, the level design does not seem all that great, and stuff like

Wacky Workbench

is straight up, uh, bad. It is fair to amount that to the graphics and music (although i've only played it with the US soundtrack even though i prefer the japanese one), but at the same time, it's the only one of the classic 2D Sonics i've ever bothered to finish (not counting the 8-bit ones), so really I too am puzzled as to why i like it.

IIRC doing a Tails run of the Steam remake was talked about in the patapon spotzone a while back, and rejected.

alright so fair warning, tonight's video recording got interrupted by a brief power outage. I could recover some of the footage, but it's glitchy as all get-out, so, ah, get ready.

raocow could probably have PPR redo the audio for the glitched parts and not say anything and we would just accept that that's how this game is.

An irritating level that ends with the easiest boss, thank goodness. Always fun to not realize there's a split path until you're already whizzing past it...
