It's also worth noting that the damage variables for the hammer change based on
what hammer you have.
I don't mean to be 'that guy', but no, you did not get walled because you only upgraded HP.
Piranha mom only heals, at most, 20 HP per turn-10 HP per piranha plant that matches its color. If it has no piranha plants alive, or only one or neither matches its color, it can heal 10 or 0 per turn. So if you manage them well you can cut its healing by a lot.
But even if you don't, you can still outdamage the healing pretty easily.
Since I wanna play along with the LP, and since I've played the game before, I am doing a challenge run(despite my earlier post).
I'm using the worst gear possible(work pants/jeans and castle badge on both M&L), I'm not using beans for extra stats, I'm not grinding(fairly often running past enemies), and I'm only leveling my speed stat because it doesn't improve survivability or damage and is pretty useless to level past a certain point. I have not put a single roulette spin into power or stache, only speed.
Even with no power boosts at all, one bros. attack does around 40 damage, double the (maximum)amount of healing the boss gets each turn. And I get to do that twice a turn since there are two characters, so my damage per turn is roughly quadruple the bosses' max healing per turn. As long as you kill at least one plant so they both don't get mad and attack you at once when you hit the mom, it's not tough to burn down its HP. I didn't have to spend any actions using syrup this fight either.
I don't say all this to be rude, I just... it's not that hard of a game. It's a Mario RPG. The reason you got stuck is not because of your build, it's because you were a little kid. (I got stuck walking around the island area for at least several weeks as a kid myself.) raocow is an adult(who plays videogames basically all the time, for a living) and will do fine, regardless of what stats he chooses.
I think people often forget how stubborn and short-sighted kids can be.Shard1697 wrote: ↑4 years ago I don't say all this to be rude, I just... it's not that hard of a game. It's a Mario RPG. Jeez well I don't know what the hell I did wrong as a kid then. But I distinctly remember fighting that thing for like half an hour and not killing it. I can't recall exactly how the baby piranha plants work off the top of my head, but I don't know, maybe I was doing something non-optimally that made my DPS worse.

y'know until making this post i didn't realize how we've really had disappointingly few piranha plants with speaking roles
like i don't think we've even seen a singing one in a game despite them being blatantly inspired by audrey ii
Another thing to think about is that, if you don't raise HP, then your healing items will typically overheal you and so be "wasted" in some sense. Here we see raoman using 25HP healing mushrooms when Mario is at something like 8/18 so there's definietly some milage to be gotten out of a little more max health, possibly tanking one extra hit before needing a mushroom, and therefore needing fewer of them. Of course, this mostly only matters if healing items are at least somewhat scarce, which they don't seem to be so far...ano0maly wrote: ↑4 years ago Speaking of stats, I wonder what's more preferable between HP and defense.
Obviously if your max health is so low that you regularly go into single digits, you would probably want to raise your HP, but a smart RPG system would reward some investment to defense. Healing items/abilities with fixed health would heal smaller proportions of your health as your health pool grows, but having stronger defense would allow you reduce the percentage of health lost when taking damage, so it works better with those heals.
