Fun Sonic Facts!
In the Master System version of Act 2 of Aqua Lake, the rising water present in the Game Gear version is missing, and all the water is dark blue instead of green. The boss of Aqua Lake, Mecha Ashika, is a mechanical Sea Lion equipped with sweet shades.

Re: All The Sænics - 2 (8-bit) - Mastering Second Chance
I was wondering where the rising water went. That level looks so different without it changing the color, it's seriously ugly without it.
Oh, raocow, you totally missed the ability to bounce on top of the water in acts 1 and 3 when you go fast enough as a curled Sonic. Super congratulations on stumbling onto the emerald without any trouble!
Next zone has some of my favorite music in the game! Why the heck didn't they make it the first zone?

i always figured all the mainline sonic games getting bad was something that happened after & knuckles, but i guess it's always been with the series, hasn't it

Re: All The S@nics - 2 (8-bit) - Mastering Second Gear
i got to the boss and discovered two very interesting things:
Sonic just has... more than most...
- after you damage it, if you jump, it tries to get under you to juggle you. it's very easily and safely looped by damaging it, then bouncing off its nose five times while holding against the right edge of the screen, then damaging it again
- my first round against it, it jumped at me, then immediately turned around before reaching me. for some reason its sprite was extremely misaligned when it did this such that it warped into me and i died instantly
Hey, every series has its bad eggs.Reecer7 wrote: i always figured all the mainline sonic games getting bad was something that happened after & knuckles, but i guess it's always been with the series, hasn't it

The amount of disdain this game has for its player is impressive.

Wow, so far this game is looking like some real trash compared to the first Game Gear game.

So far it's just this zone that's so bad. Not that I played these a bunch myself but just going off the videos alone, the physics/controls seem way closer in 2 than 1. Also, having a boss that isn't hard but mostly just exists for the joke of bouncing sonic like a ball is pretty cute.
Well it is a decent hack but sometime its just too repetitif there no level that actually pop in your face and your like oh yeah that level they all ressemble themselves and just monster along the way.

This game is an absolute bastard. I remember back in the day the Antlion stopping most of my progress, the hang gliders blocking all but two playthroughs, and Act 3 of the next zone being as far as I was ever able to go. Though oddly, I don't remember having any real trouble in Aqua Lake Zone.
Re: All The S@nics - 2 (8-bit) - Mastering Second Gear
You can skim off the top of the water if you have enough speed going. Makes Acts 1 & 3 fly by anyway. 2's a boring slog no matter how much you want it to go by faster. Next zone was also my stumbling block outside of a level select code thanks to the third act. It's really dumb.
Re: All The S@nics - 2 (8-bit) - Mastering Second Gear
and here everyone thought the sonic movie was getting the name wrong
nope it was where sonic 2 8-bit would take place get dunked on

Fun Sonic Facts!
In Green Hills Zone, the player may recognize the background music -- It is an instrumental version of "Sonic - You Can Do Anything" from the Sonic CD soundtrack; This is because the two games share a music composer in Naofumi Hataya.
In the Japanese manual, the katakana for Green Hills Zone directly reads as "Green Hill", suggesting that Green Hills may possibly be a typographical error on the part of the developers, and the Zone really was meant to just be Green Hill Zone.

can confirm act 3 is a complete nightmare on the gamegear screen crunch edition. like, have fun bouncing across chasms where you can't see if you've "aimed" correctly until you've already hit the spikes

hot take: you're not missing out on much aside from music and graphics (regardless if you prefer the US soundtrack to JP/PAL or not, they're both pretty nice)
though i've heard the recent rerelease from a few years back makes it more palatable? no idea since i've never played it myself

So "toot toot sonic warrior" was refering to passing gas? Thanks for making things clear, raocow.

Sonic CD is extremely overrated
I completely agree about the graphics and music. I've always thought the
time travel gimmick
is extremely awkward to actually use, and seriously slows down the gameplay. Not to mention it's got my least favorite special stages of any Sonic game, especially considering how perspective in them is really janky and if you dare to step out of the track *at all*, you get your time drained extremely fast.Chaotix pretty much has the same redeeming features, awesome (seriously beautiful) graphics, and a pretty neat soundtrack. Gameplay's a bit lacking and awkward, but at least the special stages are (more) beatable, at least for me.
I've never understood why people hold CD in such high regard and put it as or at #1 in their "Top Sonic Game" lists, even back in the day when there were fewer to choose. Nostalgia filter?

At the very least, I played it for the first time two(? maybe three) years ago and super loved it and was all like "man I wish I had that growing up"-y. I've played it again a ton since then too. ^^;

really hoping raocow uses the steam remake for sonic cd because it's infinitely better than the original sega/mega cd release and the early pc ports
but, y'know, if he doesn't, oh well. it'll still probably be a pretty lax and enjoyable run
