Yup, had Sonic 2 on Game Gear. It was the only Sonic game I ever owned and I thought it was terrible.

Fun Sonic Facts!

For unknown reasons, Tails appears in every title card despite being kidnapped in the beginning of the game, and what's more, has an almost complete sprite sheet, but is only seen in the opening and ending cutscenes, as well as being depicted helping Sonic on the box art. Given that fact, it's generally thought that Tails was intended to be playable, but was cut shortly before release.

Wait, what the heck? The Game Gear version had way more intimidating boss music

Another huge staple of my childhood, this game has a ton of super frustrating and rewarding moments.

That first boss was a huge progress wall for me for the longest time.

So, other interesting facts about Sonic 2 8-bit:
  • There's a plot-relevant reason to release it first. The main plot in this game (as shown in the intro version somewhat here, and more effectively in the GG version) is that you are rescuing Tails, your friend, who was kidnapped by Robotnik/Eggman. In a way, it's meant to introduce him, probably because they hadn't figured what he was at that point in the Genesis/Mega Drive game's development.
  • The GG intro is different: The song they play is not the main theme, but rather a song from later in the game (which actually proves surprisingly relevant when we get to it. I'll talk about it when we get there). It starts with Tails alone, with Sonic chasing Robotnik/Eggman suddenly appearing behind him, with the latter snatching him away. Then it shifts the title screen with the main theme.
Also, fuck that first boss. I hated fighting that boss because he made absolutely no sense when I was a kid.

Isn't this the one where Tails dies if you don't get all the emeralds.

Well, at least this game seems better made than the 1st one.
But they totally stole this boss concept from Sonic & Knuckles.

So...you may be wondering why this was so fucking difficult on the Game Gear?

Well, to put it simply: You had a smaller screen (less room to move around), and the balls varied in speed and trajectory (which didn't happen in the SMS version). There were balls, for example, that had high bounces, and you had to guess where it would land (since it bounced offscreen) to avoid it. Others came extremely fast on the small screen, especially the last couple.

It was pain. And sadness.

So what's Robotnik's deal here? Does he want Sonic dead or or does he specifically want to kill Sonic?

I thought he just wanted Sonic dead cause he's a threat to his plan of putting animals in robots. So why does he save Sonic from certain death just so he can try to kill him in a more outlandish way?

Maybe he spent a lot of money on the sarlacc and iron balls and didn't want it to go to waste.

Man, the game gear version of this was painful to play, and I wonder why they put the game gear versions of these games on the Sonic GEMS Collection to begin with.

Here's a simple hint for the emerald locations in case you need it:

They're all found in Act 2.

The levels seem designed more in line with what most sonic games are like. That said, geez they REALLY don't ease you into the chaos emerald locations. It's the very first one and it's very tucked away.

raocow for sonic 2 the big boy i think it makes the most sense to do it by zone but then shift to by act at metropolis bcuz each of those acts is about as big as any of the zones previous lol

tho i dunno how you're gonna handle special stages in sonic 2, whether the first few zones are frontloaded with them or spread throughout
i've honestly never played a video game in my life

it was likely changed between the game gear release and the master system release due to its similarity to this 808 state track

I would personally suggest raocow read this hint, because

otherwise he's gonna spend pretty much every level worrying about the emeralds. If he knows they're in act 2 he can have one act of normal play and one act of treasure hunting

.

Also if I understand what I'm reading right he should probably also know about

the sixth emerald not being in a level so he doesn't spend hours looking for it

Well it is a decent hack but sometime its just too repetitif there no level that actually pop in your face and your like oh yeah that level they all ressemble themselves and just monster along the way.

Fun fact about Sonic 2 8bit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All the Sonic platformers on the Game Gear forward were made by Aspect. Sonic 1 instead, was made by Yuzo Koshiro's company, Ancient.

Yep, you get it from

Mecha Sonic. Sonic Pocket Adventure does something similar, but you have to knock away the 7th emerald from its little cup holder

I'd like to second this. Although Sonic 2 moves to two-act zones like in Sonic 3, the actual length of the zones in terms of playtime is around the same as in Sonic 1. Metropolis is the exception, since not only is it three acts long, the acts themselves are very beefy (in addition to being a total pain in the ass).

I'm not changing how the games are seperated midgames. This is not meant to be a regular lp where I do whatever. Please stop offering that as a suggestion.
