Star Fox (SNES) - Beyond this world strange things are known
Re: Star Fox (SNES) - Hoping that tomorrow we'll all be freed
It's really something that the time cockpit view would be most useful is the time you're not allowed to use it... Did they think a crosshair would make things too easy?
Re: Star Fox (SNES) - Hoping that tomorrow we'll all be freed
Other than the difficulties with depth perception and framerate, I think the biggest problem with this game in general is the hitbox design. The hitboxes for pickups and enemies need to be way more generous, while the one for the player could probably stand to be reduced a fair bit. The way everything interacts as-is just seems needlessly frustrating.

Re: Star Fox (SNES) - Hoping that tomorrow we'll all be freed
I definitely concur that a small hitbox for the Arwing would be nice. There's quite a lot of tight squeezes where if you're a fraction outside of the place you need to be you just get slammed and it feels awful. That was a problem I had with Star Fox 64, as well. I had SO much trouble with that damned escape sequence at the very end of Hard Route. You're expected to go really fast, with doom behind you, AND make a crapload of super tight maneuvers after fighting a hard boss. It's hard to feel epic or cinematic when you're banging into everything.
Re: Star Fox (SNES) - Hoping that tomorrow we'll all be freed
I don't remember the escape sequence having tight maneuvers? That golem boss on the normal route was the one that had tight spaces.

Re: Star Fox (SNES) - Hoping that tomorrow we'll all be freed
The escape sequence in 64 was basically "don't lose sight of father" - if you fell behind, you got left behind (and it cost you a life every time). I want to say it was just the inverse of whatever the route you took to get in was, so the rewards you claimed were directly proportional to how annoyed you would get after dying to the True Final Boss a dozen times.

Re: Star Fox (SNES) - Many journeys end here
I'm one of the few that really likes Star Fox Zero. I loved the first game and 64, and didn't care for the Gamecube ones or the DS one, and then SFZ came out and I loved it and was surprised when nearly the entire internet was against me on thinking it was a return to the classic Star Fox. I agree with the Completionist's review of it. If you get good at gyro aiming then it feels just as good to fly around and shoot stuff as the classic Star Fox games, and I had a lot of fun 100%ing that game. My only gripe with it was that there wasn't any true alternate routes, only a few extra levels that you unlock after beating the game.

Re: Star Fox (SNES) - Many journeys end here
Star Fox Zero was awesome! I get being miffed about forced gyro controls, but otherwise all I think people wanted was classic StarFox gameplay in a fresh package, and they delivered on that with gusto.
This LP is my first exposure to the original game and I can't believe they fit this sucker on a SNES cart. Even though '64 is a bigger and better version of this game, I kinda like the minimalism of just being presented with foes to shoot and trying not to smash into things. More the latter than the former from what I saw. The ship interior corridors looked amazing and its an example of a cool visual feat that you can't quite reproduce with updated graphics.

Re: Star Fox (SNES) - Many journeys end here
Having never seen much of the original Star Fox this LP was super interesting to watch! I like the minimalist graphics, and i've seen some indie devs develop similar arcade shooters with an artstyle like it that looked real good but, uh, running at at least double digits fps.

How did raocow take down Andross quicker with Dual Lasers, over the Dual Cannons?

While most people know of Fox McCloud's moonlighting as a mosh-pit fighter clashing with Italian plumbers and swordsmen with unbreakable swords.
He, and his team, return to their space mercenary roots as on disc DLC in Starlink: Battle for Atlas an, open world space adventure. It's not really that shabby of a game. But it's basically ruined by the fact that a ton of stuff in game is locked behind paywalls.
Yeah, Dark times for the Fox McMan.
I like Starfox Zero, but that game is very divisive.

Re: Star Fox (SNES) - Many journeys end here
imo Star Fox Assault was better than given credit for and did enough to scratch the Star Fox 64 itch
I played a little bit of Star Fox Zero but outright gave up and put the game down the first time I had to seriously control the walker because I simply could not parse the controls for some reason. I'll probably go back to it some day.

I have genuinely forgotten the content of that place. if it takes like a minute to go through I'll combine both extras together

There's also the training level, if you want to start with that.

If you squint, you can see some pixels that may or may not be an Arwing...

Well, one of them is on the map and labelled, and the other... you gotta see it to believe it!
Re: Star Fox (SNES) - Many journeys end here
raocow's repeated confusion over the flying buildings on Venom is kind of funny when you consider that the game tells you in the credits that Andross is telekinetic

Re: Star Fox (SNES) - Many journeys end here
"welcome to purgatory, fox" has gotta be one of the comedic highlights of the series up there with slippy spamming "hey!!! it's me!!!" and raocow going "yeah!!! it's you!!!" because of the weird bomb interaction
