Hyper VI - Oh Haimari... Maybe It's Best We Part
Re: Hyper VI - Nothing To Say About The Choices I Made
I don't think "hurry run" is an accurate description for a level like this. That would be more appropriate for a level with something that tries to catch up to you linearly, not something that's constantly in your vicinity even when you're running away. You're more dodging and circling around it rather than running, except for those moments where you outrun it.

HEY raocow!
Here's something you should know: You will soon encounter a red level with 2 exits. The normal exit unlocks

the final level in the circle at the bottom right
and the secret exit unlocksthe level in the middle of the map
. You really should dothe one in the middle of the map (has a house icon)
first. Thefinal level of the outer circle should be considered the true final level of the game.

Guessing from raocow's perspective, I'd say around 20~30 minutes. I'd be surprised if raocow's answer was higher or lower than my estimate.

Three important threads for me:
Re: Hyper VI - Nothing To Say About The Choices I Made
After 6 levels I feel like the postgame isn't actually harder than the last world so much as it's less fair and using worse concepts.
It's like the levels placed here weren't intentionally made hard for the postgame but dumped here where they would be less objectionable.
The last couple might/probably will break that pattern though.

Re: Hyper VI - Nothing To Say About The Choices I Made
So somebody mentioned this on Youtube, but for people who don't read comments there: this level is based on Etrian Odyssey's postgame.
-The first floor of it is a completely unmarked teleporter maze.
-The next floor is a level filled with unmarked pitfalls, only the move patterns of the FOEs in the area offer any clue as to where it's safe. There are actually far more pitfalls than you're allowed to mark on the map.
-If you hit such a pitfall, you get dropped into the main area of the next floor, which is full of damage tiles. I'm guessing the spikes-and-mushrooms section was a reference to this.
-And what's after that? Another, more complex teleporter maze!
-It concludes in a long series of corridors where you're likely to get in a bunch of battles, but fortunately we didn't see that represented here. At least not in this particular level.
And there are no shortcuts until you get to the very end, unlike the rest of the game. I guess it's fortunate that Haimari didn't treat that as justification not to have a checkpoint.

other than the etrian odyssey reference, which i wouldn't have caught for not for this thread, that was a completely worthless level :T

Oh boy, I can't wait to see what "Haimari's Challenge" entails tomorrow.
Re: Hyper VI - Nothing To Say About The Choices I Made
It's just the entirety of World 7, but in one level.

Re: Hyper VI - Haimari's Ultimate Showdown: So Hype You Do It Twice
Hyper VI looks like everything you're not supposed to do with Mario ROM hacks
next you're going to tell me he put a message box on Layer 3 or something

At least Haimari was nice enough to put a midway point...

So is it safe to say Haimari hates video games at this point? Just like Takeshi?

Re: Hyper VI - Haimari's Ultimate Showdown: So Hype You Have A Gripe
I think this may be a level made by Haimari long time ago. It's very simple in terms of design, mostly flat terrain, full of cement blocks in first part and is overall weird in terms of design compared to other levels from Hyper Mari World 6.

That was only 2 years ago.

Re: Hyper VI - Haimari's Ultimate Showdown: Dragon Coin Edition
Those 3 or so purple pixels in the giant eye of doom are killing me. So is the random moments of the music getting twice as loud.
Re: Hyper VI - Haimari's Ultimate Showdown: Dragon Coin Edition
It would have been a more horrible level is the music entirely fucked up.
I played this game years ago and I remember saying to myself "I wonder what raocow will say if he plays this level on day...". That day happened and I'm bit deceived. I think using savestates really changed his mood, but raocow doesn't get as mad as before. But I think he's pretty blasé of all the things that happened so far. So he's just ranting a bit like "oh yeah such traps much sprites wow" and he's getting used to Haimari's way of life.
This is a weird day today though.
The last episode of Mahotsukai no Yome aired and it was a thing.
The last episode of Pop Team Epic aired and it was a thing.
raocow is doing the last level of Hyper VI and it is definitely a thing.
raocow is finishing this romhack at the end of this anime season. I wonder if the next season is going to be this nice.

Re: Hyper VI - Oh Haimari... Maybe It's Best We Part
And that's that.
I think this is one of those cases where a game plays an important part in the "greater SMW hacking context", not necessarily because of the game itself, but because lots of other people (and not only in the Japanese community) later got inspired by it and made something far more... polished, let's say.
I would agree that it was not a mistake to revisit it, but it would probably be best to wait a little while before doing the next "hardcore" SMW hack project.
Looking forward to whatever hack comes next, even if it's going to take a while because of other A-Side projects!
