17776: A story about the future of American football (sort of)

Post by zmonbobbo »

Just wanted to drop by and highly recommend Jon Bois's newest article/webcomic thing, 17776. It starts as an article about the future of football and becomes something... unique. Even if/especially if you know nothing about football, you should definitely check it out; it's some really amazing storytelling presented in a compelling, non-traditional style. I know I'm not selling it amazingly well, but it's one of those hard-to-explain pieces of art that's best experienced without spoilers or primers.

I ran across it earlier today and read it through start to finish as quickly as I could. It's run is only July 5th-15th, so it'll end up being a fairly short read. It's worth your time.

I'm probably driving right now.

Are there jumpscares?
Many people need desperately to receive this message: I feel and think much as you do, care about many of the things you care about, although most people do not care about them. You are not alone.

One can be considered as such.
I don't know if this spoils it, but upon clicking that link and scrolling down, the text will enlarge rapidly and envelop the screen as a transition into the intro.
Take necessary precautions.

Yeah, just the one so far (and it's very mild all things considered)

You know what?
That ended exactly how I thought it would. And I'm pretty darn happy with that.

"i know your residual data indicates to you that the universe will eventually be ended via heat death. good news, that's bullshit that we thought was true in the 20th century, before we had thousands more years to study it. the earth is always gonna be there, because tenth, they've figured out how to keep the sun going perpetually."

🤔
pretty rushed way to tie up loose ends lol.

I like how it was also an extremely explicit call to action regarding climate change

I really enjoyed this and I wanted more at the end, but it was still a nice conclusion.

Loved this from start to finish. Wish it could've kept going, as it felt a tad rushed at the end, but I didn't want it to overstay its welcome, either.

Jon Bois is a fantastically talented writer, by the way. Most of his other pieces are more directly sports-related, but just as surreal and funny. If you haven't read any of his "Breaking Madden" stuff, you really should! And if you're into sports at all, give some of his other stuff a read, because it's really good.
