as an i wanna community member, i do think this game is nice! if you do consider it, just know this general stuff about it:

-pros for lp'ing: long, fun to watch, nice sense of progression, lots of variety in the stages (after all, it's a compilation of various other games!), and original content as well from dedicated makers. the game itself has been thoroughly nooked, crannied, cranberried, and all that intense game dev stuff too! the people who helped make it really cared about it. the progression isn't too linear either, there are things you can save for later and little side-areas that you can do whenever you want! you can expect a fine mix of platforming, gimmicks, and bosses. there's also the plethora of i wanna community references and little chip-ins as well. (inside jokes are good jokes!) and after lots of daunting testing versions and bug fixes, you can expect a smooth experience!

-cons for lp'ing: the game is l o n g (be prepared for a 50+ hour timer), potentially hard to dedicate oneself to because of the difficulty and length. not saying this is a reason not to play, just be prepared for it! there's also a fair amount of technical knowledge required about certain jumps that will be seen throughout the game. for example, the game runs at 50 steps per second, and the player physics operate by that logic. the player's horizontal modulo can only be changed by touching walls and sometimes that's important for jumps! the bosses can take a while to adjust yourself to as well, but i think they're still more fun than they are not!

well that was my small handful of cents! thanks for the read, and have fun!

When it comes out for the general public, I'd like to see rao play Shantae: Half-Genie Hero.

Turns out that while having familiarity with the series helps a bit of a couple of things, it's mostly it's own thing.

If raocow ever does Mario Maker videos, he should give Course ID: 8192-0000-02CE-AA88 a try.

I suppose I might as well mention that SMW Central's 9th annual Vanilla Level Design Contest collab hack is out, with a whopping 152 exits and some ridiculously good overworld design and asm to get it all to work in a single ROM. So yeah, that's a thing.

He mentioned in another thread (MaGL 3 one I think) that he'll be playing it after DK 94.

Since you're having so much fun with Donkey Kong Apostrophe Ninety Four, I think you'd enjoy its sequel/remake on the GBA, Mario VS Donkey Kong.

I have no idea if anyone's suggested this, and I don't feel like scouring a hundred pages of this thread, but...

Have you considered LPing the e-Reader stages on the GBA port of SMB3? There's a patch (removed from romhacking.net, but I saved it because I'm sneaky that way) that enables them all, and having played them myself earlier this year, I feel like they'd make an interesting LP.

Of course, you probably have a long queue of projects, but just putting this one out there. :P

Heh, nice. Well, if you decide to, and need the patch/ROM, drop me a PM and I'll provide. (When I played it, I used a double-patched ROM which also removed the voice clips added to the port... but you might find those amusing, dunno.)

Also, man. The haus has been... very slow lately. I actually got a "504 Gateway Timeout" when trying to post this. :?

The talkhaus is the most consistently slow site I frequent anymore. This last week especially has been bad. With the exception of today for some reason, the last week it has failed to load any faster than a full minute per page. That on top of the 504 errors you mentioned which I get quite frequently to boot.

Those E-reader levels are actually unlocked if you get Super Mario Advance 4 on the Wii U Virtual Console.

Just something to know about, for copyright reasons.

Which is actually why it was removed from romhacking.net - it was Nintendo's "hack", so to speak! (It really was an upload of the Wii U's ROM file.)

This indirectly confirms that Nintendo's fully aware of romhacking otherwise, in case anybody was unconvinced by Mario Maker.
Well it is a decent hack but sometime its just too repetitif there no level that actually pop in your face and your like oh yeah that level they all ressemble themselves and just monster along the way.

Yeah, I'm aware of the reason it was taken down, and of its dubious legality. Thing is, ROM hacks -- and heck, emulation itself -- are *also* of dubious legality. We don't think much of it these days, because it's not the 90s and emulation isn't lumped in with anime porn, online casinos, and "WaReZ" anymore, but they're still technically illegal. And, of course, it's not like raocow does all his LPs on actual hardware, or even tries to pretend he's not playing on emulators, after all. It'd also be much easier (I would assume) for him to record GBA footage than it would be for him to have to fiddle with trying to record through a Wii/Wuu. (Has raocow *ever* actually done an LP of a game that was neither a native PC game nor played on emulator?) Ultimately, though, it's his call whether he wants to LP these stages.

Regardless, I'm glad someone leaked this hack. Having neither Wii nor Wuu, and thereby no access to the Virtual Console, being able to play the e-Reader stages on emulator was very welcome indeed.

Romhacks are of somewhat dubious legality but emulation most certainly isn't. The only part of emulation that's ever illegal is when it requires bios files from the system it's emulating and that's only illegal in the same way that roms themselves are illegal. Ie: Only if you don't dump the files yourself from your own copy.

That's true, but it's not like we can assume raocow -- or indeed, *anyone* who does LPs via emulator -- realistically owns and has personally dumped every ROM they're playing. Yeah, it's one of those things with loopholes-a-plenty that are technically illegal, but given the state of emulation these days, I don't really think many companies particularly care anymore.

But I'm not really disagreeing with you or anyone else, particularly. I'm just noting that I don't think there'd be any more legal issues in raocow doing an LP of the SMB3 e-Reader stages via a hacked GBA ROM than pretty much any other emulation-based LP out there. :P (Heck, law of averages being what it is on the internet, I'm sure *someone* has already LP'd them anyhow, so...)

Oh. Wasn't it possible to play the e-reader levels in emulators for a long time though? Way before SMA4 showed up on the Virtual Console?

I think there was a hacked save or something floating around, but the one I had at least had the levels all fully completed (all collectables), and I think it was missing some stages. The official hack actually enables *every* e-Reader stage, including some promotional ones, allowing you to play the levels properly and collect items and whatnot.

To be honest, I'm not exactly sure *how* e-Reader data would otherwise be incorporated into GBA ROMs, but then, I'm not very savvy when it comes to ROM hacking or ROM formats in general.
