Should get the "grand plan" worked out first...

Although I'm no expert on LM, my idea posted above seems like a good principle to start off with?? Then everyone can work on their own levels and then do graphics stuff as the hack progresses...separately. So maybe start by agreeing on some general principles, assigning level numbers to people, assigning graphics/overworld to one designated person/team so that we don't get mixed results, etc...Maybe someone better with Lunar Magic could give some principles to start with...
I know levels can be exported to file, but isn't there a way for them to be loaded into other level numbers?

another thing we need to organize is a sprite list for Sprite Tool (I'll need to know what sprite number we're going to use for level_ender_boss_music)

Well, we could do levels on our own then just share around, but, as in the VIP series (at least I think so), we can rank the level difficulty from 1 to 5, 1 being the easiest one, distribute them accordingly across the overworld, and unless the graphical theme is already sort of the gimmick for the level, adjust/edit it so it fits the world's graphical theme (ie. you make a forest level but it would fit perfectly on the city world, we just change some graphics and the level design is kept the same, with a different "skin" on)

I say: #1 - get a list of how many people can definitely contribute and how many levels. #2 - plan a basic overworld/scope of the hack based on that. #3 - if more people join in , we can sprinkle their levels around our established skeleton #4 - Everyone make their levels using basic mario components. #5 - assign someone to be in charge of graphics and/or overworld, and they can assemble all our levels and do all the graphics hackery and final touches to keep everything consistent.

Now if there's someone more knowledgeable than I am about hacking, maybe they can get a better plan. But I've been a part of a lot of internet projects like these, and without a definitive game plan established, they usually just fizzle out as everyone loses interest.

I'm assuming no one here is going to do any fancy shmancy ASM hacking and stuff.

aside from inserting the level-ending sprite as custom sprite 00, then no.

anyhow, I just completed a level and would like some feedback on it. just apply the patch, start it up, and go north from Yoshi's house.

Ok since no one's done this yet, I guess I will. Also please excuse any spelling errors in the names... Does it really matter?

Please remove the "levels"-part, since I said I don't know about hacking. I could only add some level ideas about what I think could be a decent level. A person with skill could probably use my ideas in his levels easily. Even without hacking abilities, I still hope I could be useful somehow, somewhere in this project.

By the way: I have found a new fan of raocow, he's an artist and musician. He's not a member in the forum yet, but maybe his music abilities might be helpful. Just don't know if mp3-music could be used in a romhack or which other file format is needed. But I will keep you informed about him participating or not.

EDIT:

Is it also possible in a romhack to change the speed of certain enemies???

The wigglers in the latest mario videos move quite fast, so I wondered if it is possible to let some enemys walk/fly/swim faster or slower than they usually do.
If it is possible, I wonder if it could also be applied on certain enemies within an "enemy family": Like a group of 3 koopas, with one of them walking faster than the other two?
I anyone of you has ever played "Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts" on Super Nintendo, in the first level the zombies had such abilities: Some of them were walking quite slow, while others literally ran towards you.
Maybe that would spice up our hack? :)

Yes, it is, using a hex editor. I could easily look up some sprite speed addresses in the all.log SMW disassembly.

Actually, I think I might do better as an idea person than a level person, I'm really bad with Lunar Magic. I only fiddle around with it when I get the chance, which was only once or twice. Most of the time, the only computer in the house that can use it is occupied by my older brother. :|

It cannot, and I"m pretty sure you need some programming or hex knowledge in addition to music knowledge in order to alter the mario music, though I'm not completely sure.

Ok well, since we've got the list up, I couldn't help thinking about the world themes before I went to bed last night.
So this is what I think we should do, it seems like a combination that hasn't been done yet, for instance WE ARE NOT STARTING WITH A GRASS WORLD. Everyone does that. >.>
Anyway...

WORLD 1 - Beach/Water
WORLD 2 - Forest
WORLD 3 - Cloud/Sky
WORLD 4 - Cave
WORLD 5 - Grassland/Mountain
WORLD 6 - Ice
WORLD 7 - Desert
WORLD 8 - Dark/Bowser
And maybe a special world/star road?

Well, anyone else have a different idea, or does this seem fine? Also, I know I have been doing all the lists and stuff, but I don't think I can be the leader of this. I am *ahem* pretty good at SMW hacking, but I have never put in any GFX, custom music or anything like that in any of my hacks, I'm just a vanilla hack specialist.

I like the world order. Also, I personally like special worlds but not star roads. Just sayin'.

No, you don't. You use a program called "Addmusic" (innovative name, I know) to add the .txt files containing the songs to the ROM. I would suggest using Romi's addmusic, as it is easy to use and (as far as I have experienced) bug-free.

Sorry I haven't posted/contributed much in this yet. I've been busy with a group project for school, but now that most of my part is done, I have more free time for this. :)

Anyways, the world list seems pretty solid. Good variety and mix, but keep hard gimmicks such as ice near the end. I suppose the Star Warps can lead to special levels directly instead of having to go through a Star Road, like in VIP (I think).

I'll get busy watching those tutorial videos and fooling around with Lunar Magic tonight and tomorrow to get the hang of hacking, but I'll definitely need ideas, since that's probably my weakest area.

Ok, good, now that the world order is decided we are going somewhere.

Now, how about Map16? I am familiar with basic Map16 (EG. Land Donuts, upside down Munchers, etc.)
But, I think it would be easier if we only used very basic Map16, though the hack may suffer a bit from that. It would be really hard to organize lots of Map16, and I don't think I'd be able to do it.

Unless we have some genius willing to organize it, we might as well only use something like this.

I think the best thing to do would be to have something like 1 Map16 page for the general game (like custom blocks (if we're planning to have any), upside down munchers), and then 1 specific for each world, and if any extra are needed, like certain exgfx files, we could add those afterwards?
If you need a hand with Mario Romhacking in some way, feel free to PM me. I'll try and answer. <3

MAP16 are blocks you create from 8x8 blocks shown two posts above.

For more information go here.

EDIT: Oh, yeah, I'm about 35% done the beach/water OW.

Hm...I guess we could have someone who's good with Map16 make custom sprites for the hack and distribute it around, or add it in the finished product (if that's how it works).

Yes, but it's complicated like that, and thats why I think we should either scrap Map16 or just use something really simple.

I'd say ideas as well, because I can usually come up with some good stuff if I try. Maybe, for example, we do an easy secret exit, and have the normal exit lead to an action stage and the secret one lead to a puzzle stage, both of about equal difficulty, and then they both lead to the same place.

Noted, Cyclops.

Ok, here you go, the beach/water submap.
Image
It was kind of hard to decorate stuff, since there wasn't much land
Oh, and here's a pic with paths.
Image
Heh, I changed something between the two pictures.
Just an error I noticed on the path to the Red Switch...
EDIT: Also, tell me the level on the OW you would like to create. I'll tell you what level number(s) to use.
I'll take the first level. (Not Yoshi's House, the one after) Level Number: 10C, and 9C
The reason you can get two level numbers is in case you want to make a pipe lead to a bonus room or something.
EDIT2: I'm changing FG palette 2 to a sand palette.

So should we start getting more specific into who does what levels?

Personally, I'd prefer doing levels with only one exit...
