I saw Penguins of Madagascar because we were taking someone else's young kids to a movie to give the parents a break for the afternoon. You probably wouldn't expect much, I'm sure, but I actually thought it was pretty entertaining. It's not a 'deep' or 'amazing' movie, obviously, but I'd say it's definitely a 'fun' one. It has kind of an astonishingly rapid pace, akin to The Lego Movie, so I'm not sure how well the kids followed it, though >.>

I guess in short, "better than you might expect"?

Just got back from seeing Birdman and Jesus Christ that was one of the most intense movies I've seen in my life. It was fantastic.

That said, it's also the only movie I can remember that has ever made me physically ill.

Just watched The Adolescence of Utena, the movie sequel/continuation/retelling/AU/what to the anime series, which I finished back in, like, October? It is now my favorite movie ever! I don't like most movies, they usually lose my interest super easily - even movies I do like I tend to want to take breaks from. But this was not the case with this. Absolutely amazing movie, seriously awesome. Though it really only makes a bit of sense (as opposed to no sense) having seen the 39-episode series that comes before, despite it being a self-contained story. So it's kinda hard to go "hey lets watch my favorite movie" with somebody, since it will make even less sense than it already would.
Well it is a decent hack but sometime its just too repetitif there no level that actually pop in your face and your like oh yeah that level they all ressemble themselves and just monster along the way.

This is kind of a bump but I'm interested in hearing more about Birdman because I might go and see it. Thank.

Nocturna

While technically not the latest movie I've watched, I did see this one recently. It reminds me of something Studio Ghibli would do, and I love it.

Last new movie I watched:
The Imitation Game

Good show, insane to think of what great achievements are covered up due to the risks of making them public
Nice to see a real world plot that takes place during WW2 that isn't a gun crazy war movie

A TV station here has been showing cult 80s movies so I've been getting the chance to see a bunch of movies I really should have seen already (and Evil Dead 2 again which is always worth a watch). My opinions (very briefly) are:

Scanners: Pretty good. Michael Ironside is always good enough to carry a scene on his own but he does occasionally have to. At first I thought that the actor playing the hero was wooden but then it occurred to me that a character who never talked to anyone would act in an odd and reserved way so it may have been intentional. Overall it was structured oddly in that the focus seemed to want to be on the scanning but most of the screentime was to a conspiracy thriller plot. I suppose too much of a good thing can be bad but I'm not sure. Overall I thought it was good but not great. Some scenes were great, just not the film taken as a whole.

Evil Dead 2: Still great. Definitely not as scary as Evil Dead but it doesn't try to be. The slapstick is great. Bruce Campbell is a very good physical comedy actor. Excellent movie.

An American Werewolf in London: Up until the ending this was great. I realise that they'd written themselves into a corner and it was either the ending they went with or an even more unsatisfying deus ex machina, but it still came off as "oh, now it's over". The visual effects were amazing though - I'm a big fan of practical effects over CGI - and the comedy was well written. The highlights were definitely the scenes with his dead friend.

The Blob: I haven't seen the original so I can't compare it to that but I liked this one too. It's definitely a late 80s movie - it's written all over it but especially in the attitude it takes to horror. By the late 80s the genre was saturated to hell and back and jokiness was very much in. I enjoyed the little jabs at other series, particularly at Friday the 13th. I also placed the mum of the heroine as being played by the same actor who played Kristen's mum in A Nightmare on Elm Street 3, which makes sense given that the two films shared the same writers. Overall it's very much a late 80s horror film - a mix of rom-com and gory horror with some baser jokes. Pretty enjoyable.

Coming up next time is Red Dawn. I look forward to good old American high school students showing those dirty Commies what's up.

Guardians of the Galaxy

Review: Overall, a good family film, with plenty of action and raccoons and stuff. However, clearly Groot was Groot, and as far as I know,

asexual reproduction

doesn't work like that

I watched Edward Scissorhands (1990) on dvd today. It was pretty unconventional and/or maybe not what I was expecting. I did enjoy it a lot.

Just saw Big Hero 6 the other day. Really cool movie, I'd say it deserves the hype.

Also, my brother and I realized we are getting too genre savvy for our own good when

we figured out the twist early on.

Bumping this back up cause I liked this thread.

I watched Spike Jonze's Her for my second time last night. I originally watched it when it was in theatres, and I loved it just as much the second time as I did the first. It's a really good movie with a great soundtrack.

Well I neither watch many films nor have anything to say on forums, but things seem to have lined up nicely this time.
So I just saw The Fountain for some reason, and I'm not sure I get it, but I'm also not sure you're supposed to "get it". I do like weird trippy things I don't completely understand, though. And that's the sum total of what I have to say on the talkhaus.

I watched a rerun of Blazing Saddles while I was on vacation and had cable.

Still funny. In my opinion.
Better uncensored, though.
