What games are you playing?
Re: What games are you playing?
Thanks to that Sony sale that happened earlier in the week, we wound up getting Double Dragon Neon for a buck. It's pretty fun to me with its over the top '80s attitude it has going for it.

playing Virtue's Last Reward but seeing a few implied spoilers has kind of ruined it for me, because i keep "connecting the dots" and basically coming up with the whole story
ugh ugh ugh uggggghhhhhhhhhhh hatred hatred hatred
i just wanna wipe my mind of spoilers for all things forever they ruin things for me so hard
a good twist or surprise can basically boost my opinion of something by 5000 and there look to be a LOT of good ones in this but nope not anymore!!!!! fuck

Re: What games are you playing?
I played Mortal Kombat (PS3 version) for a bit today.
I'm not super great. I've basically gotten as far as I have by button mashing but that only gets you so far. It's kinda weird with the way story mode works because typically in fighting games you get good with one character and use them but in this you just become whatever character that needs to win the fight for the sake of the plot but that means you can get a character you suck with and have to fight 2 people tagging teaming it by yourself.

Re: What games are you playing?
Decided to pick up Rayman Origins again after having played through Legends as the latter really brought me in the mood for more.
For a moment the game almost lost me. Jibberish Jungle is, even with its excuse as a tutorial/warm-up world, probably one of the slowest-paced worlds in any game and feels almost like a collection of just a whole bunch of copy-paste level design.
More specifically:
First off; THIS JUNGLE IS BORING.
Really pretty to look at, but besides some land masses slowly moving around a bunch, barely anything interesting actually happens here.
Second is that Rayman Origins has you unlocking new abilities as you go through the first five worlds, with Jibberish Jungle only giving you the power to attack (also why does that require magic anyway this has always bugged me), and thus the game design is not being given much room to spice up the platforming due to wanting to keep the difficulty safe as you still lack the helicopter abilities at this point (which is fortunately gotten in world two). Having that one allows for far more interesting design choices as soon as you acquire it, but alas. (I am seriously glad Legends just decided to stay true to its continuity and give you all your abilities right away as you start the game. Legends as opposed to origins almost always had a dynamic feel to it, and it's a shame its so much shorter than the former, really. But, perhaps the dynamic design is simple because of that fact (not milking the creativity of the level designers and whatnot), so maybe I shouldn't be complaining at all.)
Third off is a problem that I find with Origins in general: A lot of the levels blend into one another. When playing through the "Back to Origins" levels in Legends, I was just reminded of the fact of how little I actually remembered from playing Origins. Watching this video in particular actually opened my eyes to how Origins really wasn't trying to differentiate between different levels in the same world by, well, a really big degree actually (The Dutch replacement of Luscious Lakes' name is actually quite literally "More of the same"). And I was reminded of when I played Origins back in end 2011 that the game actually did really end up boring me a whole lot at times (where the worst offenders would always be Jibberish Jungle and Ticklish Temples, mainly for the reasons stated in point number one).
Fortunately, as I kept playing along and reached Hi-ho Moskito the game started showing its stronger sides again. With Desert of Dijiridoos giving you both the helicopter ability, having a far more interesting world theme and just generally more interesting gameplay as the game isn't trying to keep everything super easy anymore, I started having good fun again.
Glad I decided to pick it back up. Repetitive as it may be, it really does seem to capture the spirit of "silly old fun" really well in the modern games industry.
Also I love this track

Re: What games are you playing?
After finishing Legends I think I'll definitely always like Origins more though, because Origins is very much a game without flaw in my own opinion, whereas there's plenty to be miffed about in Legends.
The lucky tickets are pointlessly flashy to make people THINK something really good is happening but in the end you're just scratching off a goddamn ticket and getting a creature that adds to your collection of creatures to literally FARM LUMS.
OH YEAH AND GUESS WHAT, the final costume REQUIRES 1 million lums. GREAT. Me and my friend just completed the main game (as far as I'm concerned) and were at 300 thousand lums. I told him "I don't care about the invaded levels and I don't care about playing Origins AGAIN."
The invaded levels are just soooo freaking subpar to tricky treasures. Just because I didn't do things ABSOLUTELY PERFECTLY I don't get all three teensies. Screw the invaded levels so hard, they're not even fun after a while. Tricky Treasures feel like a better thing overall since because the level is so hard you JUST care about beating it, nevermind doing it flawlessly as invaded levels ask.
FUCK MURPHY. I've stated this before and I'll state it again, I despise the Murphy levels so much, and they just KEEP ON THROWING THEM AT YOU... I'd rather just control my own character rather than having to worry about a second character's abilities entirely and their placement and just, ugh.
Origins starts off really easy and simple to teach the player, and by the end it becomes a hard cookie. Going from Legends to Origins I feel isn't the best since Legends assumes you know everything while Origins wants to teach you.
I will say however that the 8 bit renditions of all the music levels were pretty enjoyable. Me and my friend just kept on finding ourselves laughing at the kinds of distraction elements that we had to overcome.

What a doozy of a level. And the 8 bit rendition of Mariachi Madness was soooo good, chiptune works well for mariachi music apparently.

I want to respond to your post in great detail, Bwarch, but I feel like everything would come down to me just going "I see where you're coming from and that is perfectly fine, but I happen to personally think the opposite" at every point, hahaha.

That's what most arguments on games come down to anyway~ I really am so miffed at how high they set the final unlocks though. Just feels so artificial.

Re: What games are you playing?
I prefer Rayman Origins as well. Legends just felt slapped together in spots, most notably towards the end. That Hell Breaks Loose stage would have been one of the most boring levels if I hadn't been player two as Murphy just does everything he can in an action-heavy stage like that to try and take you away from the fun.
And even though Origins went crazy on the mosquito flying segments near the end, it at least built up to a finale. Legends doesn't even do that right. Oh well.

Re: What games are you playing?
Oh, I can agree with you on that point right there, though.
I've currently rescued all 700 teensies in the game, took part in a whole bunch of daily and weekly challenges, and replayed a ton of levels just because I had a crapload of fun with them and I'm still stuck at something like 560000 lums.
But in all honestly, I don't really care about earning the final costumes. Sure, it's a shame it'll be left there in the dust unless I play until my fingers fall off, but in the end all it really is is just that what it is: a reskin without anything special to it besides possibly bragging rights. (Not to mention that playing through the game regularly already earns you more than enough of those, so limited choice isn't exactly an issue here).
EDIT: Also agree that I was kind of disappointed in that Legends doesn't really have a solid ending or final boss of sorts (dark cloud feels just as bossy as any other boss). I just felt left in the blank without anything huge at the end to show up to be "the one behind it all!!!" and give the satisfaction of fully having destroyed the monster's army of nightmares and having restored peace to the glade of dreams!!!!!
...Instead you just get the credits.
I dunno, Legends just feels so much more polished, dynamic and flowing than Origins to me. The Murphy levels never bothered me (possibly because on a keyboard I just had to tap the 'a' key right above my just jump key), and eh eh eh e gehr gehh eghegehgh eehegh hehehe I just like it better hegegehg

Only took a little over six years.
Re: What games are you playing?
Double Dragon Neon was totally worth it. I love games that don't take themselves seriously at all.
Re: What games are you playing?
I just remembered I've had DKC: Tropical Freeze for months and haven't even looked at it.
Anybody who's played it: how's its difficulty compared to Returns? Because for me that game didn't get hard enough to make up for the waggle and it not being the SNES games until like world 5, and if TF is about the same then I'll probably just keep not looking at it for a while.

Re: What games are you playing?
You don't have to waggle in Tropical Freeze since I think it's reduced to a button press on the Gamepad. Game has its moments where it's hard. I don't care for the bosses much, but the levels themselves are pretty fun. It's a very good sequel to the Wii game.

Re: What games are you playing?
Now that you mention it, I think I actually did play up to the first boss not long after getting the game. I remember thinking something to the effect of "jeez, this boss music is rocking out pretty hard completely out of nowhere, that's actually the best thing I've seen all week."Bean wrote:[some mention of the bosses]
I probably could've phrased my post better. Knowing that TF has legitimately difficult parts is nice, but I'm more concerned about the mildly challenging parts, really. Like, when I say Returns didn't get hard enough until world 5 I mean the first four worlds were an utter slog - well-designed, but an utter slog nonetheless - and then world 5 happened and the entire game did a 180, because that's when the game got hard enough to actually be engaging. Not hard, really, but hard enough. I'm wondering how TF's difficulty compares to Returns' so I can get a general idea of how long it takes to get to the fun part.Bean wrote:Game has its moments where it's hard.

Re: What games are you playing?
Hey-ho~♪
I found a working download link for Nezumi Man and I finished it in one sitting!
It was fun! Kinda easier than the original Mega Man games, though.
The final boss was the most beautiful thing I ever saw.
I'm not going anywhere near Gyonikumura (the Special mode), just the fact that it's Ghosts 'n Goblins just scares me away.
Seems to be a bit easier though, judging from how I can actually keep my armor for longer than 10 seconds in it.
EDIT: And now I just played through the normal mode of Jumping Flash! (with the ! and everything) on the PSX. Gotta beat Extra mode now.
EDIT 2: Just finished Extra mode. Jumping Flash! is cleared too.

Re: What games are you playing?
A game I've been playing recently is Magic: Duels of the Planeswalkers 2014. I got it during the Steam Sale for like 3 dollars and I've been really into the paper game anyway.
Holy crap is the video game not fun.
There are just so many things that get to me. Your card selection is subpar no matter what mode you're playing. In campaign you start with a green deck, get a red deck shortly after, and get few options to improve those decks for a long time. You unlock more decks as you go at a decent pace, but it takes so much time to get each deck up to speed that it's hardly worth the effort. You unlock one card per won match (that the game just throws into your deck regardless of whether it's a good idea,) and a lot of times there's just no synergy. Meanwhile, your computer opponents (who never get mana-screwed like the player,) have no issues doing stuff like getting to 7 mana on turn 3, or setting up an impenetrable army before you get 2 creatures out.
Every time you go to the deck builder (which should be every match to ensure your deck isn't screwed by the game throwing random unlocked cards,) you get sent to the title menu when you're done. Thanks!
Sealed is probably the worst thing I've ever seen. You get two save files, and no options to delete them. Instead, if you get screwed by bad card pulls or just want to start a new file, you have to buy a new save slot. You know, with real money. In addition, the sealed "campaign," consists of 6 matches, all against opponents who basically have regular decks (most of them are good monocolor decks, which is near impossible in regular sealed.)
Just... ugh.

Re: What games are you playing?
So, I was playing Dragon Quest 5 DS, and trying to accumulate casino tokens via the 100 coin slot machine, in order to get some of the powerful items there. Through saving and reloading, I turned 300 tokens into over 150,000...
... and *then* I hit a 300,000 token jackpot! Managed to get a Gringham Whip (250,000 tokens), three Metal King Swords (50,000 each), and four Falcon Knife Earrings (10,000 each) with still over 15,000 tokens left to play with later. Interestingly, these are some of the best items in the game, and they're available *really* early on. It only took me a total of about two hours to amass enough tokens, too. Very nice indeed.
In other news, getting very close to the end of Lost Odyssey. Disc 4, as it turns out, is longer than the other three *combined*, due to the sheer number of subquests available. I've completed the final dungeon, but this is one of those RPGs where "final dungeon" doesn't necessarily mean "final *battle*", so I still have that to do, as well one more optional dungeon, and some battle arena stuffs.
All in all, though, I loved the game, and had a blast with it. It really feels, in almost every way, like an old-school Final Fantasy game; much moreso than FF13. (Which I still need to actually play, but which I've heard heavily, heavily mixed things about.) I like to joke that it's "the best Final Fantasy game I've played since FF9". There's a lot of former Square staff that worked on the game, including the Final Fantasy story writer and composer, so it's a pretty apt comparison.
