No, no, no. I mean like. Is it normal for me to hem and haw this much about shit that doesn't matter. Ruby is handling the boss himself (he asked for that) so he'll just do what he feels best so that is taken care of, but I dunno I'm just. Trying to stay away from dictating the plot because I feel like I'm so far detached from things that'd make sense for ASMT in general, even just as a joke plot, that I don't know what to add or plan.

We have a small basis set on the Discord that I'm gonna copy, but in retrospect my post is utterly nonsensical because I wrote it with like 6 hours of sleep in my system. But yeah I feel like I'm the wrong person to make any drastic choices for a collab that isn't scope management and programming. I'm kind of non-functional rn.

I think there's some deranged plot about like Demo trying to get groceries and the whole world is like an entire grocery store and the postgame or the final main game stage is like the backend of the grocery where they keep the backup stock. I literally cannot find where this was written, the past few days didn't happen to me.

There's like subplots but I have no idea what's going on, I think that's entirely SAJ's idea, do not @ me.

I actually more or less finished spriting the concept I presented a while back. But, well, see the spoiler below.

This was made for mode 7, so the number of colors might make it tricky to use in cutscenes; but hey, there's always, like, modes 3 and 4, I guess? I'll make the HDMA background and insert it into my ROM in a few days, which will let me share an in-game screenshot too.

In case it isn't obvious, it references the Novas in Kirby, which are wish-granting machine entities.

However, that means I think it can be integrated into the supermarket plot anyway. For example, the Watchmaker could own a supermarket and have used the profits to buy this guy, then wishing for the world (or, well, the back of the supermarket) to turn into hell. Disclaimer: Watchmaker sprites not included.

ooh, that's a pretty neat design! it'd be very funny if there was the detail that the wish was extremely strangely worded, and that's why it only targetted the back of the supermarket. maybe they said smth like "the world as we know it can go to hell, for all i care!" as an off-handed comment in coffee room convo, and it took it as a wish, "we" as "the world as both i (watchmaker) and the wishmaker, so the back of the supermarket, it's the only thing we have in common".

basically, in this concept, the entire final level happened because the watchmaker pulled an overly-literal genie and now it's everyone's problem. very goofy but still like, an actual Reason.

Since raocow just put out a video advertising things, but wasn't sure what was needed/left, here's what we need off the top of my head:
  • We're taking submissions for sections for the Final Castle. Only real ask is don't make it too long; feel free to use currently-inserted sections as a guideline. If you're interested, go to the Sublevel IDs section of the Google Sheet and claim a spot
  • The Postgame Final Level is going to be a medley of remixed levels from prior Hacks/Games. If you want to suggest levels that should be remixed as part of it, or even if you want help make the level, hit us up
  • We could still use some suggestions for Overworld music. Preferably, it should be something with an MML available (eg. off SMWCentral), or an SPC; see the worlds tab of the sheet. If you know how to make SMW music, we could also use some help on that front too
  • I don't know if Lord Ruby needs help with programming the Final Boss, but if you know how to code ASM, I'm sure there's something we could use your talents for
  • If you can make sprite art, we could always use your help so we don't have to ask Catabo to do all the final art stuff left
  • Bugtesting the levels would be helpful as well

I absolutely do not expect anyone to know how to do ASM but I'm open to try and help people understand things, if they're open to experiment. Lord Ruby stated that he wants to do everything endboss wise mostly by himself, I believe, but if you really wanna be like your gayming hero worldpeace, let em rip.

OKAY i legit cannot post a comment on youtube because i hate social media and we need to go back to the geocities days i am not fucking joking but also

I'm mostly just handling programming maintenance and porting A2XT1 Iris Sprites for now. Levels come first, but music and graphics are nice too, I'm open to try and help people figure out Lunar Magic and such and point them to tutorials as best as I can but I must stress (using this sentence a lot recently oy) that I am not the best porter or Lunar Magic user, I am simply a dude who really vibes with gamedev programming so ASM just makes my autism feel nice and I'm sort of okayish at ripping graphics.

Learning ASM is not necessary, me and the other few ASMers are handling everything involving that, so no one has to touch any code, and I'd personally rather they didn't other than asking for levelasm for special effects and sprites to insert etc etc, long story short, I made an extensive baserom, but turns out no one really knew how to use the sprites in the first place (and some of them were mid) so, I'm open to replacing the unused ones with stuff that can help people, but I do need to give other people a warning first.

We're also using a sort of build tool that was released recently, rather than just inserting everything with the tools directly, but that's more for the baserom managers and people who feel confident with it as it allows for smooth rebuilds of the project to avoid the rom eating shit. I included some batch files for people who wish to use Sprite insertion tools and such, the only thing that matters is that people give us the Lunar Magic level file (.mwl file) and whatever files they use (ASM, blocks, GFX etc) so we can compile it to the baserom.

I feel like it's necessary to mention that an updated build of SNES9x or bsnes is necessary to test your level as this uses SA-1's 6MB expansion function due to having an excess of new assets in the game, I think it's mostly graphics and such? We've had someone think their rom was busted due to not updating their emulator so a warning is good.

These are also kinda stretch goals for now, we mostly need the latter for Mario enemy replacement, but the big thing here is the levels.

The main focus for now is the final "Bowser's Castle" type area. We have like four finished sections and one unfinished one that's mine, I promise I'll finish it soon (sorryyyyy). If you want to make one or two just go on the Sublevel IDs subsection of the Google Sheet spreadsheet on the main thread's OP, and just claim the Sublevel you want on the left list. The right list mostly exists to keep track of what is claimed for the Bowser level.

Overworld music is necessary, we'd appreciate something with an MML available (like the music .txts found on SMWC) or an SPC to use on SPC2MML as SAJ says, but we also accept people who actually know how to port SMW music, we're not asking for Shakespeare. I can port from MIDIs but I'm pretty exhausted rn. I can try and help with figuring out Wakana's Tutorial on SMWC or even linking it to you but I think it's very good at explaining most things.

Again, I believe Lord Ruby's endboss is being made solely by himself, if you want to mess around with ASM, I'm open to helping you unravel that mess, either for a small level or something? We're not gonna work people to the bone on making like 12 bosses like A2MT, there's nothing like that. ASM knowledge or desire is not necessary, but would be appreciated.

Bugtesting is essential af. I do not have the patience to bugtest and re-bugtest every level in every baserom update, so a team of people who could do that would be ideal. If you need to rest between sessions, don't worry. Rest is necessary for good gamedev.

Since today is one month before we're supposed to have everything mostly done and in place, it's probably a good idea to have an update on everything. We should probably figure out what's able to make it and what's not, if something needs to be handed off to someone else, etc. We still have time, but if we want this out by the end of the year, development should probably be wrapped up and into testing by the fall. Also, if we can figure out now what's on track and what's now, we can make adjustments now rather than scramble at the last minute (or keep delaying)

UNNAMED FINAL CASTLE
15 rooms have been made and inserted; three have been claimed and are marked "in progress". That's 18 rooms, so I think we might be good for this. We still need a proper name for this. Also haven't heard anything regarding the Original music being made for this, if it's still happening or not.

SPECIAL
Six level plus the Boss are done and inserted; two have been claimed without any sort of status. At this point, this is the one we probably should be focusing on more. Provided Koba can fix it, I think we have music we can use for this, otherwise, we'll have to find something else.

OVERWORLD
No idea on the current status on this at all. Still could use some help on names and OW music, but the big thing that needs priority is creating the world map in Lunar Magic. The status and timeline of that should probably get nailed down ASAP.

GRAPHICS
Big thing here is we still need replacement sprites for Lemmy in "Siege at Castle Wolfenstein" and Ludwig in "Spikes do hurt (sometimes)". I think Catabo was gonna look into that, but idk if that happened. Status of the Custom Iris sprites i'm not sure of either (personally I would like to see it done though)

CUTSCENES/PLOT
No idea on the current status on this at all. This is another priority that should probably get nailed down ASAP.

BONUS ROOM
Koba had planned on two bonus room musics that play randomly. One of the 2 is unfinished, and I'm not sure if anyone is actively working to finish it. If not, the ASM related to it should probably be removed.

POSTGAME ACCESS
There was talk some time ago about having a game-wide puzzle to unlock access to the postgame; not sure what came of that.

oh okay yeah sure, I was just awaiting approval but guess it's been approved.

Guess I should post something here, since the Hard Deadline for Final Castle stuff is 10 days from now, and that's also the soft deadline for most of the other stuff.

While a deadline was never really set for levels 007, 00D, and 12E, I think it would be a good idea to have them mostly done and inserted by the 29th.

Castle submissions should be done by the 29th, at which point someone can start work on designing a HUB and organizing the submissions into floors. Considering there are currently 18 claims, I'd say we should probably go 4 floors of 4 + either 2 rooms before the boss (like ASMT), or 1 room before the boss, 1 room before the 1st floor. This will depend on whether or not the 2 in-progress claims are submitted in time.

Currently there are 10 submissions for SPECIAL with 1 in-progress claim. Considering this is supposed to be a Marathon level, I think we can still allow people to make sections for this after the 29th.

The "2 bonus room musics" thing I don't get the sense is happening, so maybe that should be excised for now, and can be re-inserted after the fact if it ends up getting done (than again, I don't know who's supposed to be working on finishing the Bonk's Revenge Bonus Music port). Same with the Separate Iris Sprites, I think. I know Catabo had also been messing with potential Iris Sprites, so using that may be an option if Koba isn't able to do it (it also doesn't need to be done by the 29th, so there's time)

Overworld and plot text I have no idea what the status is, so it'd be nice if the people working on those gave use some sort of timeline/update.

Credits I'll probably get started on on the 29th. Can someone make sure the credits page on the sheet is up to date?

Ludwig Replacement Graphics for Spikes Do Hurt don't need to be done by the 29th, though it sounds like the issue right now is lack of ideas for a replacement.

I think that's everything. Is there anything I missed?

From my perspective, it doesn't look like "most stuff" is going to be done by August 29th. Instead, we should just lock in the final castle rooms by that date so we can start putting the entire level together. "Choose Your Flavor" seems like a good candidate for being the stand-alone pre-boss room, since it has unique music and is kind of meta for having the player choose one of three paths within that section. It's also probably the hardest of the submissions. Lord Ruby gave us a status update on the final boss on Discord yesterday, so that's good confirmation that it's being worked on.

For SPECIAL, we should set September 29th as the next hard deadline. I don't think we have quite enough sections for this level yet. I reserved two spots for this one today just to help a little bit.

I am virtually finished with my Level D boss - I just need to figure out a good way to display its HP. Then I need to actually design the level itself. The level and boss should be done by August 29th. My other claim (Level 12E) is the rest area for the first world. That will not be done by August 29th, since

I still need to come up with a good puzzle to access the postgame

. September 29th would be a more realistic due date for that.

Regarding Iris, are you positive that Terry von Feleday never came up with a SMW spritesheet for her? If not - I'm probably taking on too much by saying this - but I can give the Iris sprites a look. I've seen what Catabo's done with Iris and it looks promising, but it might be too much of a style difference, especially if Demo is kept the way she is now. Something to keep in mind for the next SMW Demo game, perhaps. I think Iris should be listed as low priority on the todo list, since we don't really need her for the game to release.

We need to decide on who Ludwig (and maybe the boss of Snake Block Fortress) should be before we start with the plot and cutscenes. And does the boss of Spikes Do Hurt need to be a Ludwig battle to begin with? It could be something else. I personally don't think the postgame needs to tie into the main story. It can just be a side plot, so it can be worked on separately without any conflicts. However, I'm not too worried about the plot and cutscenes - what worries me the most is the overworld. Without the overworld, we don't have a game, and we need to be able to test all the events to make sure things are unlocking properly, as well as test the entire game as a whole to make sure it's actually beatable. We should give Luckwaive a prod to see what the current status is.

As for the credits, I added some other stuff that should be included like a Special Thanks section and a subcategory for custom boss coding. I subdivided In-House Music into AAT, A2MT, and ASMT subcategories. If anyone can help fill in whose music from those hacks we used, that would be great. Also, are we actually using music that 4season ported/composed? 4season had been listed in the music column, but I don't know what they contributed. Finally, I think all the people listed in Out-House Graphics/Music/ASM should be combined into a single Out-House Resources category. There are too many duplicates among those three lists, and if we keep things separated like that, we would be spending too much time listing people who weren't directly involved in the project. The credits should be more focused on the core team than anything else.

That all being said, I think we're still on track for a release before year's end. Lots of work had been done on the collab these past two months, and I've been feeling highly motivated lately. We just need to maintain constant progress so that too much interest isn't lost.

As someone who is trying to step back for the sake of his mental health, I feel like it's fine if this isn't the same lorefest that the SMBX games are. I also feel like having everything done by the 29th is also a pipe dream, but I didn't say anything because I worried I wasn't giving enough deadlines and this was a good enough incentive for people.

Sept. 29th is a good enough deadline, but if someone needs I'd suggest just giving them one extra week and nothing more, and only applying it to people who actually need it.

The Iris sprites I was messing with were by the A2XT1 team? I forget who exactly did the original bad ones in ASMBXT but Ittababy updated her for A2XT1. I would not recommend messing with Iris for now, because I feel it's too long gone, and we may as well just focus on her in a sequel, and keep whatever there is of her as cameos in VWF cutscenes and such. I don't want this to be delayed further, I'm sorry.

For Spikes Do Hurt anything is good as long as it can be finished in a decent timeframe, custom or not. I don't think the postgame needs to tie into the main story either, I feel it's okay to have it just as a bonus world. ASMT did a similar thing with Black Plague popping up as a sudden threat. Luckwaive may be busy, but it's best to give them a notice just to check up on them. If I could I'd help but, again, I've been mistreating myself and not letting myself rest properly.

I agree with what you've set up in the credits paragraph. I think there was a song that 4season made that was used, but most of what he's been posting is general side projects he's been working on. He's very good at what he does, I hope he uploads more to SMWC. I guess it's just a matter of looking through the chat logs.

Best of luck to everyone. And I wish I could help more, even if everyone agrees I did a lot so far. I just feel bad about resting, and I just wanna help as much as I can since this is also something I helped birth along with everyone else.
