the hell is a.t.x.s.?
Re: the hell is a.t.x.s.?
Keep in mind that Artificial Time was done prior to raocow's collaboration with me. Everything since ATXS has been with me as writer.
Oh yes! The story and characters of previous incarnations of AT are not compatible with ATXS. A.rtificial T.ime is non-canon according to the ATXS storyline. For example, in ATXS, Shift and Accelerate had never met before, and Accelerate did not have the ability to warp space and influence causality. Think of ATXS as a series reboot featuring many of the same characters in prior incarnations of the comic.
Also, check out:
http://atperfect.comicgenesis.com/
Our first attempt at collaboration, abandoned after 30 pages.
http://aat.comicdish.com/
This came directly before ATXS, but was a solo project by raocow.
Hence, if you want to read through all prior incarnations of AT in chronological order of creation, do it with: A.rtificial T.ime at Comicgenesis -> A.T.: Perfect at Comicgenesis -> Another Artificial TIme at Comicdish -> ATXS Season 1 -> ATXS Season 2 -> ATXS Season 3 (Forthcoming)
Remember that each incarnation is a separate timeline and that the current incarnation is the only one considered canon.
There was once a comic called Artificial Time 1.2, preceded by Artificial TIme Original Flavour, both hosted at the now-defunct website http://www.artificialtime.com, but raocow decided to abandon it and let the domain name die. According to him , he still has some of the art in boxes somewhere at his home, but has lost the writing and original images. I became a fan of the AT lore when I became his friend sometime in 2003.
The reason why we did ATXS in the first place was that raocow (he was Rao! back then) kept creating new incarnations of ATXS, working towards the conclusion he had in mind, but getting sidetracked and bogged down in plots and characters that didn't go anywhere. By working together, we hoped to break that cycle, with me on board to keep the plot on track. So far, ATXS has been the most successful and long-running of any of the incarnations of AT.

If you dig around in the web archive for long enough, you can actually find a few pages that were saved, such as this one.[AOD] wrote:The reason why we did ATXS in the first place was that raocow (he was Rao! back then) kept creating new incarnations of ATXS, working towards the conclusion he had in mind, but getting sidetracked and bogged down in plots and characters that didn't go anywhere. Also, I'm just loving the art style in ATPerfect, it's like you can actually see what's going on for the most part!!! The big scenery one-page drawings are especially breathtaking. The storyline is more graspable at the first read, too. I guess you just went a little avant-garde after 10 years
Anyways, it's fascinating for me to see just how much history is behind this webcomic, so thanks for your post there, AOD.
Re: the hell is a.t.x.s.?
I think it has in large part to do with the method we chose for ATXS at the beginning, up through the end of Monastery, where raocow led by drawing first and I followed up by trying to interpret the drawings and fill in with speech.
Ever since the Second Void Knight arc, however, it's been writer-driven with scripts, and I think it's done a lot for the readability. Once we finish up and upload the last parts of VK2, we'll be starting up Season 3, and we believe it'll be the clearest one yet.
But at the beginning of ATXS, back in S1, we were still approaching it sort of like a game, where the artist would give the writer something to interpret, and then see the writer's response and create the following page based on that. It was fun to do, but terrible in terms of comprehensibility. If we could, we'd go back and redo all of Season 1 and Season 2 up through the Monastery arc in the clearer, more story-driven format.
If I recall correctly, it wasn't until the HDS5 arc at the end of Season 1 that we came up with a decent plan for what arcs we wanted to show through to the conclusion. After Season 1, we tried to get the story published, which meant getting our act together a lot better than before, in terms of art and writing. We started to plan things out more.
That's why we always insist that the reader dive in at least at the beginning of Season 2. I think the Accelerate Arc onwards is a lot easier to understand than everything that happened in S1.

Maybe if there isn't one already, you guys could write up a page explaining all the backstory up until X point and then be like "hey peeps who want to start reading, read at X" but with the page, they'll know what's going on without reading all the backlogs.

Re: the hell is a.t.x.s.?
For those of you who have followed the series-- what do you think of Eviscerate? Have you noticed this character? He's only featured in quotations and things many of which have appeared in the Accelerate and Monastery arcs, but which are generally scattered throughout the text.
We're going to make his significance clearer in chapters to come. I was just wondering if we'd been successful in establishing his presence, even if it's only through incidental quotes here and there.

It makes me kind of sad to imagine a nonsense book my magnum opus but at the same time, it makes so much sense, that I have to accept it.

Holy hell that's awesome! When I visit Canada one day, I'll be sure to bring those books along and mail them to Rao and get my own Demo doodle (or a cat planet one, could I have a cat planet one?)

Re: the hell is a.t.x.s.?
hey im curious, dont take this as a "hurry your face" thing, but more of just a simple inquiry. could any more atxs book version fancies exist in the not-forever-later future, or is this all still in a "V(0_0)V" state of being? im somewhat familiar with the printing company and, from what i know, setting up their books to be printed and sold isnt really challenging but it is pretty darn time consuming.

Re: the hell is a.t.x.s.?
I think AoD hasn't finished typesetting the last finished chapter, and then we would have to, uhm, set up the book itself and do all the layouts.
So it'd be a lot of work, that we haven't done when I just kind of had my major burnout.
Sorry man!
