(I'm just going to assume this can go here, move it if it can't.)
I want to add custom graphics to an SMBX level, but SMBX doesn't seem to accept non-GIF images, and saving anything as a .gif makes it look hideous. Is there a convenient way to fix that?
How do I save something as a .gif without it getting dithered to death?

Either save the pictures on png and use "png to gif converter" that Wohlstand made, or use different program for making and saving the sprites. Paint for example cannot save anything to gif without dither, and I don't think there is any way to fix that.
"png to gif converter" is part of the maglx2 devkit. It is located on the same folder with pge editor. Just open it and drag and drop a png file with transparency to the window, and it will generate you two gifs from it to the destination folder.

I don't believe paint.net has a problem saving a PNG as a GIF, so try that.

the "big kahunas" of paint.net, GIMP, and photoshop all handle gifs well, so one of those is definitely almost a necessity.

Pretty much any image editor other than paint will work. Even smaller, more obscure ones will work just because Microsoft never really bothered to fix that bug.
