That's done in GIMP. The actual spriting is done with Paint though.

The spriting is done in MS Paint!? Holy crud, those are super detailed, especially for MS Paint's thing where whenever you save, it gets all pixely and bad quality, like this (Picture doesn't show it that well)

He doesn't export them as gifs

Yeah, .gifs aren't optimal for sprite work unless it's animated, obviously.

I find Paint to be one of my go-to programs for spriting too. The only one I'm more comfortable with is the default sprite editor for my favorite RPG engine (where I can use the arrow keys on the keyboard to move the cursor one pixel at a time).

Not if you save it as .BMP or .PNG.

And as far as saving MSPaint things in .GIF, how you do that is draw it, CTRL+A, CTRL+C, save, CTRL+V. As long as you didn't use any colors outside of MSPaint's default 256 it'll paste the picture from the clipboard into the file and remap it into the default palette as best as it can.

The reason I wanted to find another program for SMBX was mostly because of layering issues (I can't know where to put the parts of my characters' sprites on a blank 1000x1000 GIF but I could draw over the top of an existing sprite in a new layer if I had a program that did layers and the controls would work with me instead of against me).

And MSPaint doesn't save .GIFs as animated anyway. Nor let you edit individual frames of an animated .GIF.

I really like your old-timey, limited-palette spriterydoos! Keep it up!
