I've been using the free version of GraphicsGale for animating my sprites then exporting the strips into Photoshop to produce the GIFs. GG is pretty cool, it's got limited onion skinning, individual layers for each frame and a few other nifty features... but it lacks a proper brush tool (at least, the version I've been using.)

Looking forward to seeing both more eldritch horrors and dumb boo sprites. Also slightly curious about those last few posts but it's probably best not to ask.

No, I think that background thing is purple!Iris

Iris was green in WtH, the unfinished WtH2 demo and ASMT (she was just a green Demo and was only really there to serve as the obligatory 2P character), then was re-colored purple in A2MT, and then changed back to green in ASMBXT (but was also given a hime cut, an upside down eye and was made slightly taller to further differenciate her from Demo).

EDIT: So I just realized I was being a major stupid and somehow missed the big ol' brush selection button on GG's palette window. So yeah, it comes with a number of pre-set brushes and the whole "make your own brushes" thing still stands, it just doesn't work like other image editors.

Graphics Gale? Ugh, no! That program is FAR too unintuitive for animation. Try something older, like CharacterMaker1999, it has no gif exporting support. But that is easily resolved with a sprite strip program.

It's so much nicer for animating a large number of sprites, across multiple animations, As you can select animation frames in a non-linear order from an arbitrary frame grid. Meaning multiple frame sizes, spread across one canvas. Hell, I've done commission work for ENTIRE games, from single canvases, in the past!

Here are two screencaps of a work canvas:

The animation example is indeed linear, in my example, but I felt it unnecessary to go about jumbling up the frames, just to demonstrate.

(...then there's the nice fact that if you restrict the palette to the first 16 colours (0-15), you can import tiles directly into yy-chr with no colour-importing issues, as I recently discovered, which is very nice. Maybe some of the local ROM-hackers can find use in that?)

As for brushes, CM1999 has eight dithering brushes, a standard pencil brush, and a 3x3 painting brush.

I look at it more of a trade, less intuitive but more personalizable
also, there's the fact when people use some GUIs for enough time, they can't be able to look any others without saying "this sucks"
